Stitches Between Toes?

I cut my foot really badly in the shower (a deep gash between my third and fourth toe, where the fourth connects to my foot) and I got 4 stitches (I've never had stitches before). My foot is swollen and every time I put weight on the foot I can feel tension where the suture is. Should I refrain from walking on it or is the tension from it being swollen and the fact the stitches are only several hours old? I'm afraid to rip the suture and I have no idea what to do besides keep them dry. Please help.

What can I do next?

Did they instruct you when you left? I had stitches along side and top of my foot - a deep gash. They told me everything I had to do to care for my foot before I left. I wouldn't take a chance - I'd call my doctor and see what they advise.

Like everyone else has mentioned- find your after care instructions.. if they didn't provide you with them, call and ask.

Otherwise, elevate your foot, ice( if recommended by the doctor), and take anti-inflammatory meds( if advised by Doctor). I'd not bear any weight on that foot for at least the first 24hours.

I'm surprised they didn't tell you all of this stuff after stitching up the foot.

They should have given you after-care instructions. Check your paperwork and call the number that's listed there. Otherwise, call your primary care physician for follow-up.

But in general, the early inflammation is the worst, and your best bet is ice and elevation. Usually ice instructions are 10 minutes on/10 minutes off. If you don't have an ice pack, use a bag of frozen peas or corn. Get people to wait on you a bit - you'll heal faster than if you push this, loosen the stitches, or otherwise compromise the healing, you'll delay your healing.

You may be able to take anti-inflammatories but check the instructions, because some of them (Advil, Naproxen, etc.) can aggravate bleeding. You can most likely take Tylenol for the pain. You can probably find out all of this by phone without going in to be seen.

Hope you heal up soon!

My sister had stitches in a similar spot - we were kids, wading in a stream, and she stepped on broken glass that couldn't be seen in the water.
Keep off the foot for a few days and keep it elevated.
As it heals you won't feel the pulling so much and then you'll be able to better walk on it.
You can always call your doctor and ask how to best care for it.

You should have been given some post information on how to care for your foot.

Do you have an orthopedic shoe or boot? If so, I would use it to keep from having too much movement in that area and keep weight off of it.

I am a classic foot/ankle injury prone person. I have all kinds of ortho products to use so I would probably use whatever makes it feel the best. I am dealing with a broken toe now.

You state that it is only several hours old. It will most likely be painful a couple days at least. Personally, I would stay off of that foot. I have heard that WAY too much from my ortho Dr

Beyond calling for specific after care instructions, keep your foot elevated and try as much as possible to stay off your feet for the first few days. I had stitches in my foot at Christmas time and also several times in the past. My best advice is to keep your foot elevated as that is the biggest help in reducing swelling. Also for me injuries to the foot take longer to heal so be patient and careful. Reinjuring only delays the whole process. At work I turned a trash can over and put a pillow on it while I sat at my desk. At home I spent a lot of time directing life from the couch. I kept cooking and chores to a minimum so I would stay off my feet. At night I laid my foot on a pillow which kept it elevated and helped keep anything from rubbing or bumping the stitches. For me the first few days to a week was the biggest hurdle so it was only a minor inconvenience. Good luck.

Grandson #1 had the same type of injury with stitches. He was on crutches for a couple days at the beginning so help it heal. Keep your foot up (as much as a busy mama can) and try to take it easy for a while.

Sending you fast healing vibes.
