I just bought a pair of Buster Brown Leather Sandals for my son about a month ago. They stink so bad....they are embarrassing.
I'm tempted to almost though them out, but they still are in great condition and he still fits them.
Any ideas on how to keep sandels stink free????
Thank you.

I have heard that if you put shoes in a plastic bag the in the freezer when they are not being worn that helps. good luck

The powder and the vingear works well. Plus i wash my sons shoes once a week. Yes i was amazed at open sandels that smell but they do and boys seem to be the worse in my mind. I wash but dont dry in a dryer i let them air dry that helps out a lot.

You can put baby powder in them after he's done wearing them and shake it back out before you put them on him. I actually had to do this for a pair of my own sandals! It works great. Corn starch works well too.

See if you can find the manufacturer on-line and give them a call. They should be able to tell you what products you can use on their shoes that will eliminate or reduce the odor.

Nothing can get that stink out! Leather seems to absorb the smell and it just won't come out. At least in my experience. Baby powder my mask the smell for a day, but then it comes right back. I've never tried a leather cleaner, but that may work. Call Buster Brown and ask them. They may have an idea.

If you just bought the shoes a month ago, I would take them back to the store and tell them you are not satisfied with them, and they should send them back to the manufacturer. Most good companies will accomodate, you and want you to be pleased. Buster Brown is a reputable brand and expensive, so you should not have to deal with the smell.

I have a pair of dr martins that i've had for years and i use baking soda, it absorbs the sweat and helps eliminate what odor is in the leather already, i scrub them with soap and water every so often as well though. obviously if the leather is water treated it's not going to hurt anything. a note ofr the future and from someone who just has stinky feet nomatter what, don't buy expensive shoes unless they are washing machine safe. good luck.

Are you sure the shoes are leather made here in the U.S.A.?
Can they be a fake man made leather imported from another country?
I cannot understand the stink if they are open sandles because they get plenty of fresh air - even if your sons feet sweat a lot.
The man made leather is another problem - the odor seems to hang around even with airing out time if they become wet from sweat or little ones who like to splash in puddles, it is almost impossible to get rid of the bad odor.
If we as Americans will watch what we buy and be loyal to our manufactures maybe they all will not desert us for the cheap foreign labor for greater profit. If we let the imports lay on the shelves we may be able to convince our manufacturers to return to our country. It's up to us to restore our lost jobs. We realized too late we were betraying ourselves and future generations by buying all the imported goods. It's not too late tho. Just last week I heard over the news, two companies (one from Mexico and the other was from China) that was returning to the States because Americans were not buying their imported items and the quality was inferior to American quality. So it is not too late for us to stick together and make much needed and necessary changes.
Good luck:

Maybe you should sprinkle a little baby powder in the shoes. That might help.

I had to do this with a pair of my own Doc Martens. They were broken in and fit me so good but they stank!!! I used an old toothbrush and some dishsoap. My shoes were sandals too so it was pretty easy. But, I swear, the dishsoap got all the stink out.

My nephew has some leather sandals from Stride Rite that are really smelly too. He wanted his shoes off in the car and oh my goodness - the smell was unbearable - he is only 18 months old! Hard to believe his little feet could be that bad. :) I will tell my sister to check out some of the advice you got here for cleaning them.

I don't have a solution for you but wanted to let you know that we had the same stinky problem with all leather sandals, not just Buster Brown. I finally just stopped buying leather ones and got the rubber ones. No more stink. It's too bad though 'cause they are really cute!

My son has the same problem with a pair of non-leather sandals. As far as the leather a good leather cleaner should do the trick, Walmart usually carries them. In the future try putting powder on your son's feet before he wears the sandals. It will help with the sweat soaking into the sandals and keep his feet from sticking to the leather.

White vinegar works. Also consider having him wear thin cotton socks, they absorb moisture and help the smell.

We have had that problem with certain sandals. In my experience there is nothing to do. Once that smell is there we never found anything to help. We tried odor eaters, cornstarch, baking soda, leaving the shoes outside. We tried taking a rag and using different things on the soles, and nothing helped. The only thing that helped long term was giving the child extra water to clean out their system. But the shoes stunk all summer. Sorry, but that was our experience, not with one pair, but like 3 different pairs 2 different kids.
