Stinky Diaper Pail, Help!

I have the Diaper Genie and absolutely LOVE IT!!! It's definitely one of my top five must-haves! No odors when opened or closed. I swear by it! You should give it a try =-)

I had the same problem with the diaper genie with my first. It was so bad that I decided to toss it and go to the metal kitchen or bathroom trash cans with the pedal and flip-up lid. It contains the smell just as well as the diaper genie when closed, and I spray Lysol or whatever between emptyings. It still smells when we open it, but so far, I haven't found a better solution. Since we have three babies in diapers, the kitchen size fills up and gets taken out daily, so the diapers don't have a ton of time to sit and fester. Gross... If you use the smaller bathroom one, and just empty it daily, I think you might be a little happier with it. Otherwise, you could just take them straight to the outside trash. Good luck finding a solution.

You might try dry cat litter with soda if you can find it. Put the bag of litter into the pail opened and loose if possible. Set it in the garage or even outside in a protected area for two to four days if you can. Somehow the odor is absorbed into the litter and the pail will smell fresh again. When this happens...dispose of the litter. Good luck with this....it worked on a fridge that was in a home that was flooded with mud and smelly water.

This may sound sarcastic but I'm not trying to be, really. I had the same problem with my first son and boy did the room stink. I had one of those fancy pails.

Okay, with my second son, I took the diapers out to the main garbage. It was a pain in the rear in the winter or if it was raining.

I had two kids in diapers and finally, I put the old fancy pail outside the door and then took them to the main garbage can away from the house whenever it filled up. It saved trips in all kinds of weather.

My sister had one of the fancy pails for her kids and still will leave diapers in her kitchen garbage. It's a small one and it still stinks up the house. It doesn't really take that much more time to go to the garbage. Just remember to put your baby somewhere safe. In a rocker, In a playpen or swing. good luck!!!!

baking soda!!! pour some in th bag/liner thing in the bottom of the pail when you replace it. we had a cheap safey first one and thats what i did, and it worked pretty good.

We're on our fifth year of diapers with a Diaper Genie and empty it often, spray with lysol, and let air dry. We've never had a problem with the odor being a problem. I actually hate the smell of the lysol worse, but it goes away fairly quickly. We spray every part of the Genie.

I put a dryer sheet in mine. It seem to help. Not 100%, but it does help.

What I've noticed that's kind of helped the smell in the baby nursery at church. They put dryer sheets on the rim of the pail where it closes on the sheets and helps the smell. Diaper pails do keep the smell out of the house until it's opened! Good luck and hope you find something that works.

Set it out in the sun for a day or two. It worked for mine!

M., this may not be the answer you want but it works great for us--we only deposit pee diapers in our diaper champ, and all poopy diapers get put in recycled grocery bags and taken out to the outside garbage. I learned this trick from a family I nannied for and it proves flawless. I know that diaper pails these days really shouldn't smell, but they always do. If someone can fix this problem, they'd make millions. Good luck to you!

I don't know much about diaper pails, but whenever our trash cans get smelly. I put a couple of inches of warm water with a cup of baking soda in them for about 20 minutes. Then I swish the solution all around the can let it sit a few, then rinse. They have no smell after that. You might try that plus putting one of those refridgerator boxes of baking soda in the bottom of the pail.

Also, I always threw out poopy diapers immediately (out in the dumpster).....or at least every couple of hours since you have 2 using diapers. Having no poopy diapers in the pail should make a huge difference.

Try "Kids 'n' Pets" instant all-purpose stain and odor remover. It is guaranteed to remove the odor of both urine and feces, so if it does not work, take it back for a refund. I found it at Wal-Mart and it cost about $5 for a quart. It's displayed with the carpet cleaner solutions.

The best thing that worked for us with my son, was getting scented mini trash can liners. I could take them wherever we went too. Just put the diaper in it and tie a knot in it. Vanilla was the best, take your trash out daily obviously but it worked you can even get them eco friendly. I personally could not stand the diaper genie or a diaper pail in general.

I had the same problem when my daughter was still in diapers. Try soaking and washing with a 1/2 & 1/2 mixture of water and bleach. Let it dry completely outside to let it air out. Then put a few scented dryer sheets and a refridgerator package of Arm & Hammer Odor Absorber (found at most grocery stores) in the bottom of the empty pail. The baking soda will absorb most of the smell just like if you were to put a box of it in your fridge, and the dryer sheets will keep it smelling nicely scented! Do these things everytime you emty the container and Voila! No more "poopy" smell. This works great in your kitchen trash can as well. Good luck. J. L

I agree with the previous poster on the scented bags. We never got a diaper pail. Instead, we just used the scented diaper bags and took the really stinky ones right out the door to the trash bin outside! The others went right in to our normal trash can with everything else. I didn't want our daughter's room to stink and none of those diaper pails really work as good as they say they do to contain the stink, from knowing others that had them and had problems with them. I haven't found a way to get stink like that out of plastic - same thing happens with our garbage cans and I usually end up replacing them after awhile. good luck!

Not sure how to get the stink out of the plastic, but once you do, try flushing the solids this should keep the smells at bay (plus this is really the only way that BM should be disposed of...read the diaper bag!)

my advice is to ditch the diaper pail and get a trash can that can be set outside or in your garage, anywhere where you don't have to smell it. at a certain point diapers are just too smelly for a diaper pail to contain them any longer, and them the diaper pail itself really sarts to smell. you're are probably at that point. they grow up so fast, don't they!

When my babies started eating solids, I gave up on keeping the stinky diapers in their rooms. We have a grocery bag dispenser (I made one out of fabric to match the nursery) that hangs on the dresser drawer pull. I get one out and hang it on the dresser pull, and all the wet diapers go in it. Then, when DS poops every afternoon, I drop that in and tie the bag tight, and take it out to the big garbage can outside.
You could use your diaper pail as such, after you get the stink out. Just take the stinky ones outside!

Nothing worked for me. The best I could do wa wash with bleach and set out in the sun. I noticed the ages of your kids...mine are 15 months too. So I bought a new pail (First Years with the top the pops up and you use a garbage bag inside). I tossed the old one. I used the new one with a grcery bag so I had to change it nightly in my seocnd child's room as his diapers weren't stinky yet. And my 15 month old wasn't going so often and usually down stairs. so if i changed anyone downstairs, I walked it out to the garbage. I would put really bad ones in a grocery bag and knot it..also can spray with Lysol as they do in day cares. so we mostly just put them out in the large garbage, bought a new one and used a True Air filter in my sons room.

A few drops of Lavander oil does the trick.

Lemons!!! Works great in tupperware too so that it does not stain or hold an odor. Cut fresh lemons in half and rub the plastic inside with the lemon. You may need to do this a few times the first time you do it to get the odors out. Then just keep doing it once a month. Presto! Stink is gone and it is not a harsh chemical that could get on your kids hands by touching it.
