Still Producing Breast Milk....

I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem. I have a 5 year old girl and 3 year old boy and exclusively breastfed each for about 14 months. Now after over two years of no breastfeeding I am still producing breastmilk. My gyno has done test to see if it was a Prolactin Producing Pituitary tumor and those test came back normal. So, now I am wondering what else it could be. He said if it was not that is was due to an excess of hormones. I just question that and would like to know why I am still doing it. I have started a birth control to see if that will clear it up, so right now it's just a wait and see kind of thing. I am just still concerned it could be something major. Has anyone else had this problem that could give me other ideas on what it could be. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I would just like to say thanks for everyone's responses. I guess this is not as uncommon as I was thinking. Seems like the answer is to just learn to live with it until it eventually just goes away on its own. Which is fine, because it is not bothersome to me, just worrisome. But as some have said, as long as my test results came back normal, there should be nothing to worry about. Good luck to everyone else with the same problem. At least now you know "you are not the only one". :-)

I know you've followed up on this already but I just wanted to add that wearing a tighter bra helps also. :)

You could try using a cabbage leaf (beat it up a little first) and wear it in your bar for an hour at a time. Its supposed to help :)

Is your milk still coming in as if you were breastfeeding? Or is is that if you try to manually express it that it is still there? I have breastfed 3 children and the ability to do so stays for a while (i.e. producing milk). It will eventually go away just give it time.

Hi
This is not uncommon. I too, thought a pituitary tumor was the cause. ........my son is now 2 and I was still producing some milk. Not enough to feed anyone... Unless it is bothersome you really need not do anything. How much milk would you say ?
It seems odd , but as a soon to be nurse, you know that odd things can happen. Do not worry. Some things take time.
I am a soon to be graduate of nursing.... do not over think this. I was still producing milk an month ago and now nothing. It will stop.

Kind Regards,
D.

WOW..I was beginning to think I was the only one out there still producing milk, too. I stopped breastfeeding my child in November, and now 7 months later I'm still on a roll. I talked to my gyno about it and he did the same test, and just as you everything is normal. He told me that is isn't unlikely, but not very common for women to produce milk up to a year after they stop breastfeeding, but I've never heard of two years. Long time ago they used to give you pills or something to dry up the milk, but I don't believe they do that anymore because he certainly didn't offer. I'm afraid I'll just keep producing this stuff forever....My biggest problem with it, is I'm trying to loose weight and how in the world can I do that when the milk still fluctuates my weight and water mass. I know I'm supposed to probably be offering some advice, but I have none. I was on birth control and it didn't help either. I'm at a lose, and if you find the answer, please let me know! Good luck to you and I hope posting this will give both of us some answers!

I was unable to breatfeed either of my two children so I was not faced with this problem, but I recently rieved an email from a friend of mine I used to work with that knew a girl with a problem with continus menstration and lactation, they linked the problem to the type of milk that she drank because of a hormone used to treat the cows to produce more milk. the hormone was RBST. I dont know if this will help but switching to a hormone free milk stopped the symptoms for her. I hope this helps, let me know if it does.

Hi J.,

It took me a little over 3 years after I stopped nursing for my milk to dry up. No one could give me any answers except, "everyone is different." It will stop...eventually!

Good luck!
