Standing up in the Highchair

My 14 month old daughter loves to stand up in her highchair. I have put a strap in it to strap her down but some how she manages to wiggle out of it and still stands up. I dont know what else to do unless I invest in a pack of bungee cords to strap her in with. Sometimes I can tell her to sit down and she will other times she sticks her lips out for a kiss. Which of course she gets and then she gets sat back down. Im afraid that she is going to fall out on her head one of these days. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

To me that would mean time to switch to a new high chair or worse case loss it all together. The one we had for my daughter there was no standing up in. It straped around her waist and between her legs. You could tighten or loosen it as nec. Never had a problem with it. She is just the type that would have done that. LOL!! But if all else fails i would skip the high chair and go to a regular old chair then. not as high and dangerous.

Hi C.!

Guess what! Out of all four of my girls, every single one of them did that!! I was sucessful in teaching all but one of them to stay sat down. This is how I did it...I pulled the high chair up to the dining table and sat down and ate with them. That's it. Yes, there were times that this was hard to do considering all the tasks that mommies must do. But it did work. At 14 months of age, they do understand simple commands such as, "Sit down like mommie." said in a pleasant light tone. Or, "You're just like mommie!" in an excited happpy tone. As for the kisses, I did that too. Only thing I did different was they got their kiss AFTER they sat down and I would say, "You're such a good girl!" You can also try saying, "You're so pretty sitting there!" Try to catch her as she's wiggling out of a sitting position, before she actually makes it to a standing position. As for the one I mentioned that wouldn't stay sat down, well, let's just say she learned the hard way. She toppled out of the chair one too many times and decided it was better to stay sat. Because, let's face it. Mommies are not super women and we cannot fly faster than a falling baby!!! LOL!! Try as we might, sometimes things happen more quickly than we can run to get to them. She's 26 now and although we joke about her hitting the floor one too many times with her head, she turned out just fine. Hope it helps, Sweetie!!

Hi Kathy,

My son tried to do this several times as well. I bought a booster seat that has the tray in front and it straps to a regular chair, and also straps him in. It worked well for us, and he was not able to get out unless I let him out! Plus he could sit up to the table with us and eat!

I hope that this helps. Good Luck!

I have twins that are 11 months and a yr. in Jan. as well and I had to get those seats with a tray on them. I guess I dont know the technical name for them, but they can go on the floor as well. I have an old shower curtain I lay down underneath them and this solves the highchair standing up problem. They have a tray on them and you can put them on a chair as well.
Hope this helps.

My kids did that, but usually it was because they were done eating or maybe they needed to take a break to go to the bathroom. If we're all sitting down to a meal then there's not usually an issue with standing up. it's when maybe they've been there too long.

When our 2nd came along, we got a booster chair that strapped to the seat and had a tray that slid on for our son. If we pushed the tray right up to him, he couldn't stand up in it as he had no leverage to put his feet on. boosters seats are sometimes narrower than highchairs so it leaves them no room to get their knees to the side either.

The only thing that comes to mind is...when she stands up and won't sit down, tell her she is all done with her meal. Take her out, clean her up and let her go play. If she wants more to eat, say no she is done eating. I would wait 5 or 10 minutes and if she's still wanting to eat, let her, but explain she has to sit down otherwise lunch will be over. After that, lunch is over. Wait until normal snack time or whatever your schudeule is. I know it's very hard to deal with them when they are hungry, but she needs to learn to eat at the table, then is play time. You don't get food whenever you want it, or when she gets older she will help herself without asking.
I hope you find a solution soon.
