Standing in the Bathtub

Was this a problem for anyone out there? My 10 month old son is dead set on standing in the bathtub. He has been taking "big boy" baths for a while now and he has stood before but I don't want him to. How can I correct this problem. I tell him no no and sit him down but he gets SO MAD and trys it again and again and so on. Please help.

What can I do next?

Yes they all do it because they can , but it is the worst place for them to try and stand up , my youngest slipped and caught her eyebrow area on the tap and she had to have it glued back together (she was 17 months at the time). Get a non slip bath mat that sticks to the bottom of the bath so he can at least stand on that and has a less chance of sliding , that and stay by the bath all the time , until this phase passes you will just need to shorten bath time so that you don't end up sitting in the bathroom all evening!

My 10 month old daughter does the exact same thing. I made up a song and I sing to her every time she stands "Bathtubs are for sitting, for sitting. Sit right down." Then I sit her down. We've been downing this for about a month and now every time she hears it she laughs and sits down. It's a phase. My older daughter went through the same thing at this age. This too shall pass.

I would tell him as soon as he gets in "remember, we sit in the bath" and wash him as quickly as possible (even if he gets up while you are washing him, finish washing him very quickly), then tell him again "we sit in the bath" and sit him down again, then say "if you stand in the bath, bathtime is over". Once he stands again (which he surely will to test you!), you promptly take him out and remind him "when you stand in the bath, bathtime is over". He might throw a fit, but after doing this several nights in a row, he will learn. You know it isn't safe for him to stand, so make it clear that it won't be tolerated. And yes, children this young CAN learn obediance =) good luck!

you're just going to have to keep sitting him down. over and over if need be. this is the absolute only way you will get him to mind you at this age. keep it chipper, tell him "sit down", and keep at it. i seem to remember my son around this age insisting on standing on our kitchen bench (we have a bench-style table instead of chairs). he walked at 9 months so was VERY brave, and i was terrified he was going to fall and crack his head open. i have video of him, barely able to talk, repeating after me, "yah, SAH DAH!" after i told him, "sit down!" lol. he's maybe 10 or 11 months, it's adorable. but it's a vital command that little ones have to learn. good luck!

I had the same problem. I think you can't just wait/hope for it to pass, etc. We would immediately take our twins out of the bath as soon as they stood up. We would tell them they need to sit in the bath, but if they didn't sit immediately, out they went. They got the picture very quickly. My only problem now is that they don't always want a bath, so they'll stand up in order to get taken out..... In that case, a quick sponge bath does the trick if they really need washing.

I felt like a parrot when mine did this. Over and over and over again, barely taking a breath between each time. He eventually got it and wanted to play with his other toys more than hopping up and down. (You do have tub toys right?) But you are right not to want him doing this. It is so easy to slip even with a no-slip mat. Just keep on telling him, until you annoy yourself so bad that you decide bathtime is over :)

Lol, sometimes I wish my one year old would stand up in the tub so I could wash his lower body! One suggestion I have for you though to help prevent injuries is a cover for the faucet. We bought a blow up octopus faucet cover (at Babies R Us I think) which would act as a cushion in case he fell forward. Good luck!

Hello,
It sounds like he has his own ideas on what he wants. He is going to keep trying to stand up no matter what you say!! lol I have a son like that. He is probably very smart. You could try getting into the bath with him. The other option would be giving him toys that he wants to play with in the tub so he will not want to stand up.
Good luck with your little tiger,

Everybody is correct. It is a phase, cause they can. Keep sitting him down, Get the no slip mat I also got one of those tub chairs and put our daughter in it before I put her in the tub.. It worked for a while..

Okay, so this very moment I saw a thingy that lets babies stand up for bathing. Seriously. It was at Giggle.com I guess this is common in Europe. Try looking at this. If not just make bathtime fun. play toys and stuff. Maybe that will help.

Keep sitting him back down and stay consistent and stay calm. If he sees you getting upset, it will encourage him to stand more. Also, if you are done washing him and the behavior is occurring, and he is not listening, end the bath immediately. Eventually, he will stop.

Yes...we have the same problem! And according to my parents, both my brother and I did this. We have tried toys, ect but he just squats. I just let him stand and make sure to keep an eye on him. Why fight?

pull the stopper and use a hand held sprayer he may not like it if so you will just have to put up with it for awhile anyway, this will change.

Is it only when he is in the bathtub that he does this? A friend of mine had a little boy that never wanted to sit down on his bottom (at any time). Turned out he had something wrong with his spine. Just throwing that out there in case the thought hadn't crossed your mind. My daughter liked to stand up in the bathtub when she was younger. I would turn on the shower head when she would do that and or whatever reason she didn't like the shower head too much (I think she was somewhat scared of it) so eventually she decided to sit down on her own.

My 10 month almost 11 month old does the same thing. I do make him sit and sometimes he gets mad but I just redirect his focus on a toy. Usually this will work for a little bit but when he gets to the point whre he keeps standing and not listening then I take him out. You have to stick to it becaue they could fall and hit their head on the tub or the faucet. I have even started putting a sock over the faucet which helps a little but I still make him sit down.

I bought a ring that sticks in the bottom of the tub, the child sits in it and it has safety features and it very safe. I don't put up with things that are safety issues. I had a close friend in high school that fell and hit his head and died. It's a big issue to me and they are going to sit down and that's it.
