Stage 2 Nipple

We started the stage 2 about 3 months old. Try it and every few seconds take the bottle out of his mouth until he gets the proper breathing down as the milk is coming out a bit faster. He will get the hang of it quickly.

I'm on my second child who is nearly 5 months old and I STILL can't get him accustomed to the level 2 nipples. Of course, it takes him 20-30 minutes to finish a bottle using the level 1 nipple. We've tried to switch over 3 times after he turned 4 months and he just gets so much in his mouth that he can't swallow it all. He gags, turns his head, and starts to get super squirmy - all signs to me that he's just not ready yet.

Give it a try and see how he does. If he seems to adapt fine, then move forward. If not, put the level 1s back on.

I switched our son over to stage 2 nipples at about 2.5 months because it was taking him 45 mins to finish a bottle!!!! He did not have any issues with the transition.

I bottle feed, but one of my girlfriends that breast fed always kept her baby on the level 1 nipple when she fed from the bottle. She said that this helped keep the baby BFing. She said that she heard if she switched to an easier flow nipple the baby was more likely to prefer the bottle than the breast because it was easier (less effort). I have no idea if that is true or not, as I bottle fed both of my babies.

Just try the next stage nipple. If your son fights it or chokes a little, then wait a while. You will know, just try.

He is well beyond stage one nipples. Those are for newborns and the hole is really really tiny so that the flow doesnt overwhelm them. Usually the package will say the recommended age range.

There's no specific time to switch, just something to try if the baby is getting frustrated while drinking or seems to be pulling very hard. Try a stage 2 in his next bottle and see how it goes. If he's losing a lot of milk out the sides of his mouth or gagging/choking on milk, he's not ready. My daughter was breastfed and took bottles too, but never liked the stage 2 nipples. She did much better when I used a fork to "pop" the stage 1 nipples, which ended up making a much larger hole than the stage 2s had, but she would "drown" in milk with the stage 2s. Kids are funny! You don't ever HAVE to switch, but if he's struggling with it, you can definitely try the next stage.

I breastfed and my kids did better with the larger nipple. He M. be used to a faster flow and have no problem with it all. I would try it and if he has trouble you can switch back.
