Just put the corned beef in the slow cooker and about to get on my green shirt and shamrock socks. We'll probably have green milk tonight.:)
Beyond wearing something green and having soda bread are you doing anything to celebrate?
My family of origin is anything but Irish, but growing up in queens we had corned beef and cabbage as a rule and green beer too.

We totally forgot this year. Too much going on I guess. I happened to put on a green shirt today, does that count?
I threw some corned beef in the crockpot this morning, last-minute. We have too many activities tonight to really do anything. I did have to put some green socks on this morning so my kindergartener would stop chasing me through the house, giggling, and trying to pinch me. ;)
We don't do anything - although my husband has a green & white button that says "Kiss me, I'm Jewish" that I think he hopes people won't read too closely and he'll get in on the festivities!
Happy times to all who celebrate!
Growing up we never had school on St. Patrick's Day. I went to a Catholic school, and our pastor's middle name was Patrick. He declared his feast day to be a day off school! He was quite popular during the month of March :-)
I'm actually more than half Irish, and the only thing we're doing is wearing green. The kids and I have festive, Irish shirts, and I have my St. Patrick's Day socks on. If my husband wasn't a recovering alcoholic we might drink green beer. As it is, we'll probably just have stir fry chicken for dinner. Hey, it's a busy week.
We don't "celebrate" per say, but we do make a wreath of snakes to hang on our door as a way of protest, many pagans do. You see, there are no snakes in Ireland, never were. The "snakes" they talk about in the stories are actually the pagans that were drove out or killed. Not something we choose to celebrate. But I have no issues with those who do celebrate, and I have been known to drink a green beer if at a party :)
Any excuse to eat colcannon and drink Guinness..
My daughter wore a green shirt to school, but that's about it.
we had a LAX game this year. I put corned beef in the pot and turned it on low. My youngest son added the carrots, potatoes and cabbage a little while later.
No beer. No soda bread. Hell - I didn't even wear green this year!! LOL
I'm 1/4 Irish, but never considered myself Irish as we didn't know that side of the family. At our house, we love any reason to bake sweets, so kids and I made cupcakes with green icing and shared with friends.
Green beer sounds good.
we wear green if we remember. dh is part irish and does not try to celebrate. (he is not a drinker either)
I made irish soda bread, and am about to add cabbage to the corned beef, carrots and potatoes. I have both an irish flag, and one with shamrocks, and both are on display. I would make colcannon, but without all the kids home, seems a little indulgent! I may have to go in search of stout...somehow white wine doesn't seem the appropriate beverage!
Last Saturday was the St. Patrick's day parade, so we did go to that.
Happy St Paddy's Day to all!!
I feel kind of bad that I'm not cooking this year. I am 3/4 Irish, grew up with step dancing and Irish music, etc. but there just wasn't time to make a boiled dinner on a weeknight and my kids don't really like it anyway. I normally also make bread but I'm trying to not eat grains so why tempt myself? I do have decorations up and am wearing green. I might pick up some cupcakes or something for the kids on the way home from work. Maybe I'll do a dinner on Sunday.
I made my ham and cabbage casserole!
A few years ago a leprechaun made a visit to my daughters aftercare, leaving behind a mess of turned chairs and scattered green glitter. Teachers have also followed this from year to year, and so the leprechaun has been known to visit our house too, maybe not as messy (there is clean up after all) but definitely leaves green pee in the toilet! I love the way my daughter says "those leprechauns are so naughty!" I've read about building little traps to try to catch them. Sounds like a fun activity. Maybe for next year :)
Most we really do is corned beef and cabbage and might remember to wear green. This year we're not even getting that far. I had surgery yesterday and the idea of doing much of anything about anything doesn't sound too good. We'll have corned beef and cabbage later, once I'm up and around more because we really like it, St. Partick's day or not.
