Spring Cleaning - When Do You Do It?

I've been in a rut. I "clean" my home weekly - laundry, floors, etc. and once a month - on the 1st of each month - I take shower mats out, floor mats, comforters, pillows and wash them.

This week I've been on a mission. I stripped our family room - washed the walls, removed the vent covers, washed them, vacuumed up into the vents, moved the TV and dusted under it. My husband commented that he thought it was a little early to Spring Clean. I'm going through the rooms and getting rid of stuff. I have my donate pile and my garage sale pile.

When do you Spring Clean? How often to do you "deep clean" your home? What do you do - do you steam clean the carpets (we have area rugs and runners). I want to rent a Rug Dr to clean them. Although with that one - I do need to wait until it's not freezing outside since i'll have to clean them on our back deck.

Looking forward to hear what you do to Spring Clean and when you do it.

What can I do next?

Only time I REALLY clean, beyond the day to day, is when company's coming. In fact, if I didn't frequently have dinner guests we'd likely be living in filth and squalor!

Wow Cheryl, you put me to shame.

Washing the walls? Never. Although if I see a spot of filth on a wall I will wipe that spot. I consider my house pretty clean, but I rarely "deep clean" it. I would like to, but it just doesn't happen.

LOL Theresa! But actually, we do the same, honestly. We "keep up" with the cleaning, but don't "really" clean unless we are having a party. Then we run around for 2 days before scrubbing the whole house, or I will hire a cleaning crew to come in and do it. =)

I don't spring clean...ever. Maybe I am a bad housekeeper!!! I have never removed vents and washed or washed the walls (unless we are moving). That's just too much work for me!!! lol. I barely can keep up with the house as it is and can't imagine throwing more on top.

I do it whenever I can. I have a weekly planner book, and I schedule a day where I do some little things here and there. Right as I write this I am looking at my sliding door and I cant see out of it due to my massive mutt, smearing unidentified brown stuff on it. ACK... note to self: wash poop off window today during break from all other cleaning"

I deep clean when ever I hit the point where the house makes me uncomfortable. Not sure if that makes sense but it is the point where I say, mop the kitchen, but no longer feel I could then eat off the floor.

I pick projects to do a few times per week, and just keep going with it so nothing ever gets too disorganized or dirty. For instance, last week I washed down the kitchen cabinets with Pine Sol/Bleach one day, and then one day I dusted/wiped down the ceiling fans, and then one day I dusted/wiped down the wood window blinds, and washed/ironed the linen curtains in the bedrooms. This week, I moved the TV stand and cleaned behind it, I took everything out of the office closet and re-organized it, and tomorrow I will box up DD's outgrown clothes and mail them to a friend (who has twins a bit smaller than my DD). I just keep going like that, pretty much ongoing and forever. On a daily basis, the kitchen gets cleaned, laundry is done, beds are made, and then I have a rotating list of things that are done weekly (vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, cleaning bathrooms, dusting). My kids help with a lot of these tasks, as well - they help make the house messy, so they get to help clean it up!

For me, the most dreaded thing about spring cleaning is the flower beds in front of the house. We had a hard freeze this year (which almost never happens here) - my hydrangeas are dead, as well as several of my perennials (although the Primroses survived - yay!) - anyway, I need to rip it all out and re-plant everything. But I'm going to wait until March to be sure we don't have any more weird weather. ;) And then at some point I will have to deal with cleaning the pool tile - I can see it out the kitchen window and there's a white chalky line on the tile - but I'm not doing that until the pool water is above 80*! LOL

I've been trying to do some of the bigger "deep clean" projects here and there the last month or so, so I don't have so much to do. But typically, a weekend when the husband is off and we get our first really nice day (into the 60s) we'll do windows, move furniture and vacuum/do base boards, wipe down cupboards, etc. Then we can let the house air out. It's hard to find the time to devote to it, and I keep finding more and more little cleaning "projects" that need to be done. sigh.... it never ends!

I'm with Jo w. I guess when I see that the regular weekly cleanings aren't as effective. Not really a schedule. And not really the whole house at one time.

I usually have to wait until after April to do it because of the pollen. It gets everywhere, even with closed windows and doors, and if I clean too early, I just have to do it again.

I usually start at the top of my house and work down over the course of a few days or weekends. Dust all light fixtures, ceiling fans and windowsills. Go over wall with a swifter dry mop. Clean baseboards, wipe down kitchen and bath cabinetry. Vacuum all upholstered furniture. Clean carpets with my mother in law's steam cleaner. :) Go through closets and get rid of kids clothes that are outgrown and stuff we no longer wear. That's about it in addition to the regular dusting & vacuuming & mopping.

I let my husband do the pressure washing of the exterior of the house and decks. I do inside, he does outside. :)

Good luck!

We have "spring clean up week" in the neighborhood where you can put practically anything out and the garbage people will haul it away. That's when I do my spring cleaning. It is usually mid-April. I get rid of so much unwanted stuff. I deep clean every 4 months or so.

Well it's usually done around spring break when the boys are home and I can get some help. I dont' do as deep as you we usually just try to get things back in order and cleaned. Our house is so small we are practicly on top of eachother all the time so we get rid of stuff we don't need to send the seasonal stuff to storage. Sometimes this will also happen arount Thanksgiving to get ready for the Christmas stuff to come into the house.

I scrub the dickens out of the house twice a year. Usually in the spring it will be around March when the weather is warm and dry enough to lay things like carpets and pillows in the sun. I repeat this in fall around October since the weather has finally cooled but it's not too wet again. It gets the house ready for the holidays also. This reminds me we need to turn our dining room rug - note made to self.

I do my Spring cleaning in the Fall haha...so I guess I call it Fall cleaning. I do this because you spend more time in the house in the winter and in the Summer the windows are open more so pollen and dust from cars driving by gets into your house anyway...so I don't see the point in Spring cleaning...just fall cleaning...it stays cleaner longer that way...and the air is cleaner in the house for when you are gonna be cooped up in the house for months on end. =)

I just try to do a little every day. Daily we have to do dishes, laundry, sweep, and wipe off the counters, and then I will just add one extra thing to my list like clean all the blinds and windows in one room, or wipe off the baseboards and vents in one room. The next day I will move to the next room. This way I hit all the windows, blinds and vents once a month. I have a seasonal schedule for a lot of the big jobs; I clean out (detail) my car in the fall because I hate doing it in the cold, then as soon as it gets warm again, and once in the summer (usually after a camping vacation). Cleaning out garage is the same type of schedule. Carpets cleaned usually as it gets warm, when I am sure no more snow will be tramped inside. We do a deep cleaning right before we get the Christmas decorations out, and everyone is eager to help because they like decorating.
For carpets, we used to rent a machine from the local cleaning supply store, but now we have a Kirby Sentria vacuum with a carpet cleaning attachment, so I just use that.

I clean every day, deep clean when I notice it's getting nasty, and the spring cleaning comes along when I get a hair up my rear to do it, lol. I have a steamer, so I steam clean my carpets about once a month. I watch kids, so they get dirty and I'm a little ocd about them being spotless.

Ah, we so need to do this. I imagine we may try to do it soon, before it gets too warm. Did you see NEXT weekend is supposed to be in the 50's here! Crazy!

We need to do the walls and baseboards soon. The carpet needs replaced, but it gets steam cleaned about 2x a year. The bathrooms need a GOOD scrubbing.

Our laundry is backed up (thank you accounting midterm), but we got two loads through this morning (thanks to my 8 year old doing one after I left).

I think all in all the house is in pretty good shape, but it does need the down and dirty cleaning. Thanks for reminding me! I think!

well we just moved in November because our landlord sold the house, so I cleaned out the entire house! It's amazing what you can collect in just 1 year of living somewhere. In our new place, we have wood floors on the main level and the 3rd level. The basement and the 4th level have brand new carpet, so we don't need to clean it just yet. Normally I clean out through out the year. Never really at a certain time of year, just when it needs to be done. And of course I do my weekly cleaning of all the bathrooms and floors and stuff

I spring clean after Christmas. I put away the decorations and then deep clean the room. When that room is done, I move onto the next one. I have a long holiday at that time of year so I have the time, plus I start the year off with a sparkling clean house.

I do a mini spring clean every 3 months.

Hi, Cheryl:

Ask your husband what are his thoughts on your doing comprehensive
cleaning?

That is the issue.
