Spotting During Early Pregnancy - Burnsville,MN

I don't have a question so much as need for reassurance. I just found out this morning that I'm pregnant with our second child (yeah!) BUT... with our daughter, I just knew I was pregnant, had classic morning sickness etc. I only took the pregnancy test with her because I was into all things baby, and the test was just another baby moment. I took that test 5 days before my expected period and it was positive.

So, fast forward a couple of years and we're trying for our second. My period was due last week, and I was good and waited to take the test until the day after my expected period, and it came back negative. I took a test every few days, always negative. When I started spotting on Monday, I thought it was the start of my period. And I remember thinking I was glad I wasn't pregnant this month because my normally positive job has been awful/very stressful the last week (side note: it's a good job, I've been there 7+ years; it was just that something bad happened that's already resolved and I don't anticipate crazy stress like that again).

So here's where I need reassurance: (1) I'm having a hard time absorbing that I'm pregnant just because a little stick says that I am, because I don't FEEL pregnant, if you know what I mean. (2) does the very very slight spotting mean that something's wrong? It was probably less than a 1/4 t, and lasted for 2 days? (3) Does it mean anything that it wasn't until almost a week AFTER my expected that I tested positive? The test says that 99% of pregnant woman test positive on the day of their expected period, and I tested negative on the days 1, 3, and 5 AFTER my expected period date.

I'm going to try to get an appointment as soon as I can, but in the meantime, if anyone had something similar happen, I'd love to hear your story!

Thanks from a freaked out mom of TWO, TWO COUNT THEM, kids.

What can I do next?

If you have been stressed at work their is a very good chance that you ovulated late which means you wouldn't be as far along as you might think. I have had this happen before. Odd are that the spotting you are having is related to implantation bleeding. There are lots of factors that can change when you ovulated. Stress is a big one. Now I would get into the OB just in case and let them know but all should be fine.

If you're going through a stressful time, it can delay your ovulation. I agree with the thoughts of others that you may have just ovulated later than normal. So, your period was probably only going to come when you finally tested positive. By an ultrasound, your due date will probably be a week or two LATER than if you would go by your period. Keep this in mind when you think you are due in 8 months. Your baby may not be ready to come out for an extra week.

It took me ten days past my first missed period before my stupid test came back positive. I probably took five tests in that time period, because I had never been late before and we were trying, so I was just going crazy! I don't think that is an indicator at all that something is wrong.

The spotting could very well be implantation bleeding, which usually happens around 2 weeks after you conceive. I had bleeding with my first pregnancy (just a little) and have a healthy toddler now as a result. I had a miscarriage my last pregnancy. The bleeding leading to the miscarriage was very different. It was more like a period then just spotting and gradually got worse with cramping. Also, I felt no pregnancy symptoms with my sons (the lost baby was a boy) and am roughly 9 weeks pregnant now and feel terrible. I think each pregnancy is very different. If you're worried, I would ask your doctor for either an ultrasound to take a peek or a quantitative HCG to make sure your pregnancy hormones are where they need to be for how pregnant you are. Good luck!!

I was spotting when I found out I was pregnant too. It was weird bleeding from what my normal period would have been like (very light) so it prompted me to take a test and low and behold I was pregnant. I am sure it is nothing to worry about - the doctor told me that it was just from the egg attaching. I never had any pregnancy symptoms until I was about 8-9 weeks pregnant so it is not uncommon to not have them right away. There is no such thing as a false postive pregnancy test. Congradulations!

I had spotting for the first month of my last pregnancy. I didn't Feel pregnant I just felt off. (I now have a healthy 17 month old). It is possible that your didn't ovulate until later and that's why you didn't show up pregnant until later. If you are worried contact your Dr.

Hi K.,

Rest assured. The spotting can be very very normal (I had it too) and it can be from the egg implanting inside/on the uterine wall. Maybe that is also why you didnt test positive until then. Also they say to take a pregnancy test the first urine of the morning, because that sample should be the most potent, etc. Congratulations and put your worries aside.

With my first pregnancy with our daughter I was sure I was pregnant. But we were on vacation with my MIL (who is very nosy) and I didn't want to buy a pregnancy test when she was around. I woke up one morning to some spotting and thought for sure my period was starting. I was very sad that I wasn't pregnant. But, the spotting only lasted a day and when we got home I took a pregnancy test that was positive. We have beautiful daughter who just turned 2!

With my 2nd pregnancy, I had no signs at all that I was pregnant. I thought I may have missed a period, but I had just stopped breastfeeding and several friends had told me it had taken them several months to start regular periods again after breastfeeding. I only took a pregancy test because it was New Year's Eve and I wanted to make sure I wasn't pregnant before I had anything to drink. I was completely taken by surprise when it was positive because just a week before I had a negative one right before Christmas. We now have a beautiful boy who is 10 days old.

The bleeding is probably implantation bleeding and nothing to worry about. As far as having no symptoms of being pregnant, every pregnancy is different. My second one started out so different from my first that I didn't truly believe I was pregnant until my midwife did an ultrasound at my first appointment. It is probably a good idea to see your doctor, but I don't think you have anything to worry about. Congratulations!

One thing you should know (if you don't already) is that stress can delay your ovulation time, thus extending your cycle significantly for that month. So take a look and see if the stress aligns with when you were supposed to ovulate, it could have pushed it back -- on average, women get their period about 10-14 days after ovulating. Also, the spotting could be left over from implantation and it could just be normal pregnancy spotting. Its good that you have an appointment with your doctor, I hope everything works out for you!

Few things...

First, I had spotting through my ENTIRE first tri-mester when I was PG with my son. It was mostly just lite bleeding, but the Dr. told me no tampons. Also, my Doc had me come in after each time the bleeding started just to "check" and make sure I was fine. I had a ultrasound at 6 weeks and was able to hear the heartbeat at 10 weeks. Just as I was moving into my second tri-mester it stopped.

Second, you have to remember that every pregnancy is different and you may not have symptoms right away. As the average, morning sickness doesn't usually hit until 4 weeks - or so. Meaning that you may just not have other symptoms yet.

For your peace of mind I would go in and get tests run at the Dr's office. They will be able to read if you levels are high enough and to see if the pregnancy is off to a good start.

You may have ovulated later than expected and may be experiencing implantation bleeding. This happened to me with my pregnancies. It was usually a light spotting for a couple of days around the time when I would be getting my period. At this point, if you aren't having bright red bleeding or a lot of pain, I wouldn't stress out over it too much. I know easier said than done! Good luck with everything!

Every pregnancy is a bit different from the first. Sometimes early spotting is just the baby attaching itself to the uterine wall. But I would have it checked out by a Dr as soon as possible. I knew a women who was definately pregnancy but tested negative the first 5 times she took it. So home pregnancy tests can be unreliable.

Hope things work out will for you.

Hi K.,

I have a lot of empathy for you as I've been through this before! IT's very frustrating. It sounds to me that maybe you ovulated late this month and the slight bleeding you're seeing could be implantation bleeding. This would explain why you had several negative pregnancy test.

One of my pregnancies I had numerous negative test for a week after my period. I called the doctor and they had me come in and I had a negative urine test, so they did a blood draw and it was positive but my hcg was so low that it wouldn't show up on a pregnancy test. I came back 48 hours for another blood draw. My hcg had actually dropped. The doctor told me that I was miscarring and he didn't think I ever implanted. Well, here's the rest of that story, that "miscarriage" is now an 11 yr old boy who's home from school today with pneumonia.

So....... Call your doctor and get in for a lab test. At this point, anything could be happening. Also, I don't ever "feel" pregnant until I'm about 6-7 weeks along.

I wish the best for you.

You may have conceived later then you thought, there for the test came back positive later then you expected. i didn't "feel" pregnant until i was 4 months pregnant with my son. the only tell tale symptom that i had was no period. before i knew i was pregnant i was really tired but after i found out i felt nothing. all you can really do is what you are planning and that is to see the Dr.
