Spots Bleeding Through While Painting

Hi R.,

Just to clarify, is this that cruddy old 1970's paneling that so many people used to cover crumbling plaster, or is it the original wainscoting (which in some more elaborate homes could be floor to ceiling)? If it is the former, use the Kilz--it works great! If it is original, it would be well worth the effort to refinish it.

My dh and I have fully restored two turn-of-the-century homes and are halfway through our third. It is a ton of work, but the results are so worth it! Anyway, I agree with the others, Kilz works great, I have used it many times.

Good luck with the restoration and let me know if anything else comes up. These old houses are full of surprises, some good, some not so good. If you are refinishing hardwood floors, I highly recommend Renew Hardwood Floors. Jeff runs it and Jose did our floors--he was the best!

Have you tried Kilz? It was recommended to me last summer and it is wonderful. It's a little more expensive but worth it.

It will continue to bleed through. Use Kilz. It will definitely work. They now have a low odor one but do it when you can have windows open anyway if possible. One coat of primer is fine so you shouldn't need to cover everything with Kilz, just the spots. That is assuming it is just a spot problem and not a whole wall problem.

A friend of mine has done this and there is a special product that works better than primer and can be done with only one coat and it stick better to the paneling as well. I cannot remember the name off the top of my head. Call Sherwin Williams or another paint specialty store and they should know the name of it. I remember her saying it has a stronger odor though, so that may be a consideration. It is not going to peel off the paneling especially if it is smooth surfaced paneling you are painting over with the primer.
