Spitting and Gas During Direct Nursing

I have noticed my daughter who's 5 months old seems to spit up a lot more when I nurse her directly versus when she is given the pumped breastmilk through the bottle. Has anyone else had this problem?? Is it in my head??? Does having the breastmilk refigerated then heated cause something to break down that is easier on the stomach?

What can I do next?

Your flow is probably just faster than the bottle nipple, causing her to gulp instead of suck. She is probably just swallowing more air that way. I'd try burping mid-nurse and see if that helps. Good luck!

Previous poster is probably right - it could very well be a difference in the speed/flow of the milk. You may also want to try holding her in a different position when you nurse. Maybe she needs to be a little more upright or something. See if you can get her body into a position like the one she's in when getting a bottle.

I had a lot of problems with my first.... I had an ABUNDANCE of milk, and a very vigorous let-down..... if my baby pulled away, milk was squirting everywhere!

She was gulping so fast, that she also swallowed a lot of air.... and it all came back up in what I saw as projectile vomiting...... not just a bit of spit-up, but a fountain of it, shooting out.

I found that if I pulled her off the breast after the first couple of minutes and burped her, it was better.... she got rid of some of that trapped air, and was able to nurse better. Sometimes I had to burp her several times during a feeding....

I have a feeling that your daughter is gulping, trying to get the milk as it is coming, rather than her being able to suck as she wants on a bottle..... a different position, or burping her more frequently during the nursing may help.

What everyone else said :) I have a fast letdown and had to burp my newest baby two or three times during a nursing session. Try laying down to nurse or lay on your back with baby across you so the milk is going "uphill" or reclining in a seat...as she gets bigger and more adept it will become less of a "problem".
