Spices, Margarine and All Those Good Things

My little child is getting big by the day, she will be 9 mo.old this Wed. So the question is, do you use margarine, salt, pepper on your baby's food, you know like mashed potatoes and stuff? I've been so careful about not feeding things with a lot of additatives, so I'm not sure how to proceed. I do realize once she is 1 she can have it all, but what about now? What do you do?

What can I do next?

I have a litte one who is 2 1/2 now, and I've never put anything on her veggies she loves them -- so why add extra? I RARELY salt on anythgin so that's not an issue and she has just gotten into using pepper here and there -- love the grinding.

So if you would normally add it if it needs the flavor do so -- if not -- then don't. She's so young she wont miss anything and the health benefits are great!

if I made something just for the baby.. I wouldnt add any spice to it. but if Imade mashed potatoes for the family- and she was eating some of our food- she got whatever spice I added to it.

In just a few months your baby will be eating full table food anyway- so whether she gets a spice now or in a month really wont matter much.

spices are fine, but if you're trying to keep things natural, don't use margarine. it is really bad for you! and it contains soybean oil (vegetable oil is the same thing) which can cause major allergies. also, babies also don't need the sodium so skip the salt.

Any type of spices, or seasonings should be fine unless there is an allergy. Just treat it as you would any new food, after you give it to him watch him for any reactions.

I would prepare your foods as you would eat them, then your child will be more likely to accept them. Unless, they're super spicy, because I think children have many times more taste buds than adults so they're super-sensitive to taste.

However, I'd skip the margarine for everyone in the family, and stick with real butter. I personally use Horizon's organic butter. It's more expensive, but like the L'Oreal commercials say, my family is worth it!

I'd be careful with seasoning - my son is 3 and 1/2 and I still don't salt and pepper his food. Example - if I make corn w/dinner, I don't season it in the pot, my kids eat it natural and my husband and I salt and pepper our own. Certain foods, obivously get seasoned when you are preparing them, but I never do extra on theirs. Once they get use to the salty foods, they eat less healthy.
When I sweaten things for my 10 mos old, I use applesauce (like in plain oatmeal) and she loves it!

L.,

I used to have to salt my daughters peas or she wouldnt eat them. Other than that, I would either mix fruit into the meats or other foods so that it would be more moist and taste better or make sure the fruit was on the end of the spoon so that's what they tasted first.

Good luck,
L.

I was concerned too, until I read the ingredients in baby food, they use spices. Watch for allergies, use as little as possible, why add when you don't have too.

I agree with the others - season liberally, sweeten and salt lightly, and use real butter instead of margarine!
