Speech Therapy Recommendations

I am hoping someone may have a recommendation for a good speech therapist either downtown or in the Edgewater-Andersonville area (60660). My almost 4 year old daughter has been stuttering for over a year now, and our pediatrician did give us a referral but they can only see us during the day on Monday and the earliest I can get in is the end of June.

I know most kids outgrow stuttering but due to the fact that it has been a year and it is only getting worse and not better is one factor, but we are also concerned it may be hereditary as my husband's brother has a severe stuttering problem that he has had his entire life and has never been able to correct it.

I would prefer it if they could see us in the evenings or on Saturday as both my husband and I work full time. Thank you for any and all suggestions you may have.

Hi Audra,
I have a 2 1/2 year old son who has been taking speech therapy for about a year. I found the therapist through Early Childhood Intervention. It is through the state of Illinois. I am a single mom so I needed help with the cost of therapy and I am lucky to have found out about this because it is through the state. If you would like more information or a phone number to them, please feel free to let me know.

Sincerely,
T.

the school district in your area offers services. But they don't have to offer them on your schedule. They will go to a daycare if it is in the area and do the therapy.

We have had a wonderful speech therapist for our son for the past 2 years and she lives in Rogers Park. Her name is Amanda O'Hara. Please email me and I can send you her phone number privately if you are interested. We also live in Edgewater.

Hi Audra,

I would first check with your school district, because you should be elegable through the state. I think it is NSSED.

Also, I know it might be a drive, but you should check Pathways in Glenview. They are remarkable. I am almost sure they have the hours you are looking for. They are the best, and it's worth it for your child.

Best of luck,

Jolie

we had wonderful luck with Emily at North Shore Pediatric Therapy. Our son saw her for several months this year and loved working with her.

have you tried going through your local school district? it wouldn't be evenings or weekends, but she may qualify for their early childhood program, which would give you (free) preschool and would include speech therapy. of course, with the summer coming up, it wouldn't start though until the fall. school districts usually have preschool screenings in the spring where they screen kids to see if they qualify.

I can't give you recommedations on therapists in your area but I can tell you that my sons father studders and so did his mother when she was younger. My sons father had a hard time growing up because his mother always harped on him about his studdering and never relented because she was able to correct hers and no longer studders. He is very insecure about it because it was the topic of discussion a lot in the house and he only studders when he is nervous, in a hurry, or very upset. My point is do help her try to not studder but don't push her to the point she is constantly aware of it. Letting her know that she may be able to stop the studdering with help but if she can't that is ok too will make a great big difference later for her and may even help the therapy sessions be more effective.

I went through my school district. They'll test her and if they feel she needs alot of help they do have summer school. Also when my son went they bussed him to the daycare afterward.I don't know your neighborhood but it is state funded so I'd imagine it would be similiar. You'd need to call ASAP if you want her to start a summer program because it does take awhile to do the test and get the okay. My son was almost impossible for anyone but me to understand. He is now high honors in HS and you'd never know he had any problems.Hope this helps!
