Speech Testing for Toddler

Hello, I have a 2 1/2 yr old daughter and I have some concerns about her speech. She is very smart and detailed with a lot of activities however she has a very difficult time pronouncing words fully. We work with her often doing flash cards and preschool books etc and she understands and can easily point to the right things but when she says the words she leaves letters out and no one would know what she was saying but us because were with her all the time. I know that kids all develope at different rates but it has been brought up that it is better to get their speech tested earlier then later. Does anyone know of a service that does low cost or free speech testing for toddlers. I would really appreciate any recommendations. Thanks for your time!

Hi M.,

Call Easter Seals of San Antonio located at 2203 Babcock Road and their number is ###-###-####. They come out and do a free speech assessment. Then if she qualifies for speech, they do it in the home and they go through your insurance. I don't believe there is any co-pay, nothing. I think after 6 months the family makes a payment depending on family size and income, average I believe is about $20 a month. But if she's already 2 1/2, in 6 months, at age 3, the Board of Education takes over and that's free. The Easter Seals group is really awesome too! Good Luck!

M.,

Your daughter is still growing and learning, so maybe you should give it some time before putting too much pressure on. We experienced the same with my son when he was around that age also, and thought he will grow out of it. Well, he still appeared to have some speech problems when he entered Pre-Kinder and was set up for free speech classes through the school system that went on for a couple of years but helped him tremendously. So be patient and if nothing else, when she enters school, hopefully they will be able to assist you in a speech program for your daughter as they did for us.

Easter Seals is a state run program that will assess any child under the age of three for free in the state of texas. My son was premature and has been receiving services from them since he was 15 months old. He is now 2 1/2 and they are working on transitioning him into the school district. Hope this helps!!

My Niece asked her Pedatrician about her son when he was the same age and we thought that the sooner we got help for him the better because he was to a point he wouldn't even speak because other kids made fun of the way he spoke..,so the doctor referred her to someone else but that didn't work for us, but it may for you.
When he became Three years old the school system took over and sent her a therapist that would come to her home to help him with speech therapy and with this it was quickly that we noticed a diffrence in his speech & that he was even talking again it was as if he had more confidence also than when he was younger. Hope this information helps you C.

hey! i'm a speech language pathologist. call your local school, tell the speech therapist your situation, and she'll give you the phone # of someone that works with kids prior to starting school...either a government/state funded early preventative place. they will evaluate and provide serices to your child, if needed, for free. when she turns 3, she will then receive services from your local school. good luck and good job acting on this early!

Hi M.,
When my son turned T. I enrolled him with Easter Seals. They come to your house and if your girl qualifies they will give her speech therapy once a week. They will bill your insurance and if your income is on the high end all you will pay is your insurance copay. When your child turns three they turn them over to the school district. You are right about getting help early on.

My son was saying nothing at all. He is now talking a little bit but is a big improvement.

Easter Seals is located at 2203 Babcock Road. The phone number is ###-###-####.

Good luck and I hope this helps you.

Since your daughter is under 3 y.o. she would be eligible for services from an Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) program. There are 3 in SA depending on your zip code. They are Brighton, PACES, and Easter Seals. They used to be a free service but now will take insurance info and bill insurance if they can. Give them a call and tell them you want to have your daughter tested due to speech concerns. They'll get all your demographic info and then someone from intake will contact you. Next an evaluation will be conducted (if deemed necessary)and the results and recommendations will be discussed. Payment options (if any) will always be discussed and agreed upon prior to the beginning of any services.
