Speech Problem

I have a little girl turning 2 in a couple of weeks. She just started really talking about a month ago and is saying new words everyday and even 3-4 word sentences but on Saturday she started studdering on her 'I's. I-I-I do it, etc. I don't really know where studdering comes from or the history about it but here's a little about my baby. She started about 1-1 1/2 months ago having mini seizures. Or as her Dr. said, "unresponsive spells" that last under 5 minutes. She's had 3 of them and none for over 2 weeks now and we have an appointment scheduled for June 27 for a neurological workup. Could her "spells" be related to studdering and should I inform her Dr. about this? Thank you

What can I do next?

I'm not familiar with the mini seizures or unresponsive spells, but I would definitely tell the neurologist about her speech changes. Sometimes when we think something is irrelevant a doctor will think it's a helpful clue to the problem. I hope you mention it.

I agree you should tell the doctor. I will say, though, my daughter has stuttered quite a bit over the years (she is almost four now). She has never had seizures or any similar issues. Our pediatrician related her stuttering back to new experiences (when her little brother was born; when we were on vacation with friends and their kids; the week of Halloween--anticipation).

My friend is a special ed teacher. She said stuttering at the beginning of a sentence (like you mention) is very, very common. Sometimes they have so much they want to say, they just can't get the words out fast enough.

We think that was the issue when we were on vacation. Our pedi said our daughter was probably competing for talk time with the other two girls. When we started our long drive home (in our own car without the other family), she completely stopped stuttering. It was bizarre!

Best of luck to you and your family. -A.
