Hi everyone,
My daughter was put on Efamil Nutramiagin and I was wondering if any other moms out there have used this before. What did you think about it? Since its less dense and predigested, did you need to feed your baby more often? Is there anything in particular I should be looking for? Her ped said it can cause loose green stools and it doesn't smell the greatest if they spit it up. Please let me know what your experiences have been with this formula. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi E.,
My son started out on regular formula and had horrible gas and acid reflux. He would scream after eating. We then tried soy formula. It was a little better, but still screaming all the time. Finally the dr. put him on nutramigin. After 5 days, he was a different baby. Yes it was expensive and stunk so bad, but he was better. After about 4 months on it, he got terrible diarrhea. He could not get rid of it. So the dr. tried switching him back to soy and thankfully that worked. Nutramigin works really well, just watch out for very loose stools.

Hi we have been using this formula off in on for a few weeks. I breastfed other than that. The reason we had to use it was because my son is allergic to the protien in the dairy that I eat! So I had so supplement with Nutramiagin and cut out the dairy in my diet. (it takes about two weeks for dairy to leave the body). It does not really smell all that great..... but I cannot compare it to other formula... I know that it is the only formula he can have if I stop breastfeeding... and then I believe he would have to drink it as a toddler because he will not be able to have dairy. So I may end up breastfeeding him longer than one year... even if that means pumping the milk for him.

I am a mom of 13 month old twins and we are off formul now and are on regular milk with sippy cups no bottles. Both of them and my older son that is 7 have Reflux. The doctor put my twins on that for a month and it worked good. They ate the same amount as they did on any other formula. When the month was up they went on soy only poweder and the reflex was really bad again so there Dr said to try Soy liquis only the ready to go kind and lets see what happens. So I did and it worked great they used the soy liq ready to go and it worked great. I used the liq soy from 2 months to 12 months.

Hi E.,

Why did they put your daughter on Nutramigen? Is she colicky or does she have a milk/soy intolerance. My baby is on the same formula now and she is three months old. She was diagnosed with reflux and possible milk intolerance. She's been on it for about a month or a little longer. She did OK on it at first but now she is starting to refuse it more and more. I breastfeed and formula feed and she is starting to prefer breastmilk but I just don't have enough.
Anyways, she stays pretty full on it, no different than the other formulas we tried. Some parents say that their babies had explosive poops on it but my baby doesn't. Her stools are sort of greenish and kind of...mucousy or yellowish. Her doctor said thats normal with the nutramigen. I noticed that she tolerates the ready-to-feed formula better than the powder. It's only good for 48 hours once you open it and it only comes in a can. I store it in glass medela bottles and you have to make sure to shake it really well. It separates kind of like breastmilk. Spit up is spit up, it doesn't smell any different to me. Smells like sour milk.

Well good luck with your daughter.

Oh, please!
The green is from the gall bladder upset this causes.
It doesn't smell good cause of the junk it is made of.
Barley formula is easy to make, also check WestonPrice .com for real food things to feed your baby.
Please take a look at the horrible statics with puberty onset younger and younger- and look at what is in formula- many nutritionists feel this is thewhy.
Please take this seriously- what you give your baby to eat is the buliding blocks they are using to build thier bodies.
best,k

What I can tell you is, your child has many food allergies that will be a problem later on. Check out NAET treatment to eliminate them so she doesn't have future developmental problems, eczema, dark circles under eyes and possibly life threatening allergies. Also make sure she gets on her tummy 4 times a day for 30 mintues each to provide the correct amount of core strengthening, visual and auditory stimulation.

It's been yrs since my son was on this formula & I wound up going back to soy formula due to the excessive cost of the hypoallergenic Nutramigen.

I used it very shortly as we found that my son was alergic to milk protiens within a few weeks of starting him on it. Anyway - I did have to put rice cereal in it for him to keep it from coming up so easily. I didn't need to feed him more per say, but I added the cereal so that it would not cause reflux and him to spit up so much.

Yes, Yes, yes. I used this for my son(who is now 4) and let me tell you it stinks. And be careful, because it seperates very easy. Its also expensive. Not sure if you can get WIC, but if so, just have your ped write a script and take it to the WIC office and they will give it to you.

I didnt experience the loose stools. He was on it till he was about 6 months. He couldnt even take the Soy formula. He has constant, constant crying, and after going thru some home remedies, those mylicon(sp) drops, and changing the formula a few times, my ped finally recommeded Nutramigen. And he was a much happier baby. O, he stayed on the same eating schedule, nothing changed about how much he ate.

My daughter(who is now 4) had failure to thrive and acid reflux HORRIBLY as a baby. She didnt tolerate many formulas, including this one........We finally got stuck with Progestimel(which is a formula for babies with a fat absorpition problem). Anyway, for the week that she was on this, she had some nasty spit up though, it smelled rancid:( YUCK! I wish the best to you. It is expensive so try to get WIC:)

My daughter was on this formula, well actually she was on Similac Alimentum but they are the same thing. She has sever acid reflux and was losing not gaining weight. Soy and other formulas did not work but this one did. Drawbacks are that it is expensive and smells bad but you have to do what you have to do right? I would take the advice of ordering in bulk I wish I had known to do that. Also my daughter is now almost 3 and is still small but gaining weight steadily and still has acid reflux, not sure why your daughter was put on it. Good luck!

My daughter used it from when she was about six months to 14 months. I did not think she needed to be fed more often but I only have breastfeeding to compare it to. Her stools were definitely more stinky when she started formula, but I heard all formula does that. I can tell you that if you can afford to order it in bulk, you will save a lot of money if you order it by the case online. It is about $27 in the store for a 16oz can of powder formula. I could order the same thing for $19 - $22 per can online when I ordered 12 at a time. It's a lot to spend at once, but you will use it so I thought the savings was worth it.

I can tell you that I also tried the equivalent type of formula in Similac and that one smelled horribly from the minute you open it and my daughter hated it. We never had any problems with the Nutramigen and she didn't spit up hardly at all. Good luck!!

My 3 kids used nutramigen, use it like a regular milk, it has milk protein (casein)as the normal milk, but the diference is that the casein of nutramigen have been hidrolized or cut in shorter pieces, that is why is easier to digest for kids allergic to milk protein....it is very bitter but they get use to it...but they will not be years having it because of the bitternes, in less than 2 years old my kids leaved the bottles...try not to give him dairy products...then in few months, if you stik to it, they will overcome this allergic....good luck
