Soy Milk....

My son will be 11 mths on Christmas and he is currently in soy formula. We have been slowly introducing regular cow's milk and it still seems as though he isn't tolerating the regular milk too well. I know that your not supposed to start introducing milk until a yr but we started early with his sister and he just isn't too thrilled with the formula. Now it only seems to bother him when he takes more then a few drinks. He can eat stuff with milk in it like mac n cheese with no problems. I'm wanting to try him on soy milk but no one I knows drink it so I don't know what kind to get. Also should I try the soy milk or just lactose free milk? Any advice would be helpful.

What can I do next?

both my kids were lactose intolerant from birth til about 3 yrs old or so, I had them on soy formula then onto lactose free milk, I use dairy ease most the time. its not a good idea for young kids to get too much soy so I don't buy that milk as often

My son is the exact same way, he isn't allergic to regular milk he just can't handle much of it at one time. I give him the regular flavor soy(any brand is pretty much the same). I'd watch him if you try the chocolate or vanilla soy. If my son has more than just a few ounces of the chocolate it gives him the "poops." If he has a sensitivity to cows milk there is a good chance he will be that way with chocolate too, so just keep an eye on it.

My 19 month old drinks nothing but soy milk. He was also on a soy formula. He has acid reflux and small issues with diary intolerance. Also, like your little one, he seems to do fine with just about all other dairy products(milk is the real problem, it makes him miserable)...We buy vanilla and chocolate flavored. He really likes both of them. And they are healthier-in general. Now, my older boys drink soy milk too. They chose to drink it because they like it...

I would think that if your son required soy formula, it would be a good bet that he will do well on soy milk. We actually just by the walmart brand. It is a bit cheaper and organic...

Good Luck!

He probably lactose intolerant, but there is a possibility that he is allergic to straight cow's milk...maybe he needs to see an allergist. but i would try the soy milk or lactose free milk 1st and see how he tolerates it. you can also buy goats milk... my friends cousin had to drink it when she was young. you can buy small cans at the grocery store, but can probably get in larger quantities at a hhealth foods store.

My 13 month old is drinking Silk, the Vanilla flavor (you can get it at Walmart and most grocery stores). She loves it. The Ped. said it was totally fine too.

You can try the soy milk but he really doesn't have to have milk in his diet after a year as long as he gets calcium and calories from other sources. Millions of people in the world do not drink cow milk. Make sure he eats veggies like broccoli and such. Milk is not a nessecity and is highly allergenic.

We have tried to Wal-Mart brand Chocolate soy milk and it is pretty good, so is the Vanilla.
But if you talk to your childs doctor you can have the baby allergy tested and know for sure what needs to be done. Both of my children have quite a few allergies and its easier knowing so we can avoid certain things.

My 5 yr old son was the same way, there is something in cows milk that some babies cannot tolerate, i had to wait till my son was almost 1 year and a half and then i slowly mixed the cows milk with the soy, and eventually weened him off soy and onto regular milk. I started with 1 part milk to 3 parts soy formula and then once he cold tolerate that i mixed a little more milk, just something u need to play with. Good luck

My daughter who is 22 years old now has to drink soy milk. We didn't find out until she was 16 years old that she was lactose intollerant. Having problems all the time and we could not figure is out (you know the poops and stomac cramps). Took her to another doctor and he said to stop with the cows milk and try soy or take the lactose pills. She tried the lactose pills first, took them for two days and ended up in the hospital with a reaction! That was fun! While she was in the hospital they gave her a taste of soy milk. It was horrible she said. But you do get used to the taste, Samantha said now they have come out with flavored soy (you know chocolate, strawberry, etc.) Samantha said it takes alot of the yuck out of the taste and it's not so bad. She has a three year old daughter who was doing the same as her. Samantha, knowing what to look for, put her on soy milk when she was 18 months and she is doing fine! Both of them can have cows milk in foods including dipping cookies and know when to stop drinking the cows milk.

But, the only thing I can tell you is to talk to the babies doctor before you do anything. On the other hand you are the mom and you know your baby better than anyone else. I truly believe that if you and your doctor put your heads together you will come up with a solution for your son.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

My 12 mo. daughter is severely allergic to cow's milk. Her allergic response only takes seconds from the time it touches her lips. It's the protein casein or whey in milk that babies who have a true allergy to milk react to. There are certain degrees of intolerance that babies can have. Some may react to a drop and some could tolerate mac and cheese but not a whole glass of milk. A true milk allergy is different than lactose intolerance. I don't know much about lactose intolerance but there is a difference. My baby had an allergy test that showed she was severly allergic. Anyway, about soy milk. I started drinking soy milk since I was nursing her, (those proteins in cow's milk do pass through breast milk) and have found that Soy Silk, and the great value soy milk brand to be just as good. I have come to really like it! My baby is now starting to drink it too. I had to start mixing it in her rice cereal to get her used to the taste. She likes it now. I buy the soy silk for her though because the GV brand is processed in a factory that processes cow's milk. This may sound drastic but since she is so allergic I didn't want to take the chance.
I hope this helps.

I had a very good friend who was a huge fan of soy products. Both she and her husband did not like regular milk, so they started buying soy and just fell in love with it.

It comes in flavors, vanilla, chocolate, etc as the other mom pointed out, and they also have a nice line of soy yogurts as well.

Another point I wanted to make was that cows milk has bigger proteins in it that are harder for babies to digest, which is why they stay on formula for awhile. At his age techinically he should be able to tolerate it, but again all kids are different and perhaps it's just being introduced a bit too early. If he really does not seem interested in the formula, maybe you can try natural juices. Most juices are made with only 10%, and have a ton of sugar in it, but Gerber has a good line of all natural juices as does juicy juice. And of course whatever other dairy you can actual get in him, cheese, yogurt, formula when he'll take it, just beware that yogurt can constipate!

Talk to your doctor too, see what he/she thinks, and don't ever forget that your his mom; you know that baby very well and if your doc can't give you an answer you like, you can always get a second, third, fourth opinion!!

Dear A.

Try starting off by mixing the regular milk mixed with the formula and see if he tolerates that better. Sometimes when they go thru the switch it takes a couple of weeks for the adjustment. If he is still having problems then try the soy milk or the lactose free. Its more expensive to use either of these but if it is the only choices left...

Also remember that allergies can be gotten over with exposure and since he can tolerate it when it is cooked in other things he should be able to surpass it.

I think the most difficult thing is standing the time it takes to get thru the adjustment.

Good luck I hope things work out... Hugs M.

you know, if he doesn't like the taste, you might try rice milk. it's sweeter than soy...i grew up a vegetarian, so i was used to different kinds of milk, and above milk alternatives if he ends up needing one, rice milk tastes alot better.

My daughter was the excact same way. She didn't have a milk allergy though and we gave her SOY Silk, regular flavor and she did just fine on it. Are family doc and the GI doc told us that this is the best milk because it has enough calcium in it. WE finally figured out her stomach problems and are now putting her back to 2%. Feel free to write me if you have any more questions.

Eliana could not tolerate cow's milk either. She is now 25 months old and still can not tolerate milk or other dairy products. We tried a little bit at 11 months old. The lactose in milk and things such as cheese are different in reference to amounts. There is less lactose in cheese and dairy products then there is in milk. I would suggest either regular soy milk or rice milk.
