Sore Hips

I am hoping you guys will have some ideas for me. I am currently 5 months pregnant with my second child and am to the point where I can no longer sleep on my back or stomach.
This leaves me rotating between the left and right side. What is happening is the pressure put on my hips is waking me up in excruciating pain. It feels like my bones are being rubbed together at the hip joint. I have tried using pillows to prop myself up to alleviate the pressure but that doesn't seem to be helping. I didn't have this problem with my first pregnancy.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do you have any ideas on how to remove the pressure? I will be sore all day long from this and need some serious relief.

What can I do next?

I had the exact same problem. I tried a pregnancy pillow, which alleviated some discomfort, as well as propping myself up with bed pillows (between knees, etc.), and I saw a chiropractor regularly (who helped but did not solve the sore bones). What REALLY worked was a simple foam "EGG CRATE" to put on top of the mattress. I still had to flip sides a few times, but it was immediately more comfortable and made the second half of my pregnancy infinitely better. Good Luck.

I had the same horrible problem. I bought a small pregnancy pillow (cresent shaped) at Bed Bath & Beyond and slept with that between my knees. My midwife sent me to the Physical Therapist where I worked with a wonderful woman who did "Feldenkrais" (spelling?) That really helped it is very gentle and subtle, it made a huge difference. I also did yoga, I had already been practicing for several years but prenatal yoga is wonderful at any time. Best of luck

Hi Ashley,
It has been awhile since I was in your position but I remember that it helped to have a pillow under my belly, pillows behind and wedged under my back and a pillow between my legs. the pillow betweem my legs seemed to eliminate thae pain in my hips. Good luck with your preganancy. Debra

I had a hip problem when I was pregnant, and I went to a chiropractor that specialized in pregnant women. It went away entirely. I couldn't believe how well it worked!

Hi Ashley,
Have you tried sleeping with a small pillow placed between your knees? It will help take the pressure off your hips by keeping your legs more in line.
Good Luck M.

I did the pillow thing... I had hip pain with all four of my pregnancies and it got worse and started earlier with each one. I slept with lots of pillows. I tried doing Yoga to help with it... but the stretching actually made it worse. I found that I had to limit the time I spent up-right... either in a chair or on my feet... because I would pay for it at night and the next day. Hopefully with your jobs you can figure out a way to not stay in one position too long.
Good luck... at least it goes away- my hip pain was almost totally gone as soon as I delivered.

You could try taking Calcium and magnesium. They helped me with a lot of different problems during pregnancy. I think I was taking about 600mg of Mg & 800mg of Ca each night before bed. If you get enough Ca in your diet, you could take less of that, but the Mg is more difficult to get in your diet. I recommend the Jigsaw Health brand of Mg. It is the best I have found. www.JigsawHealth.com

yeah, I have a suggestion...sleep in a recliner! I had to do just that with my second child. My first wasn't too bad and my third I was in a hospital bed 85% of it and that bed was always reclined up...save your hips and, if you have one, sleep in a recliner.
Hmmm editing my response, now. LMAO It would've helped if I could see the other suggestions before making a post! :-)
Seems like the solid answer (so far) is to sleep up right basically? Good luck!

I agree with something JC said below. My most recent pregnancy caused me a lot of discomfort while sleeping, especially at the hip bone. I had a memory foam mattress topper, which helped a little, but it's mainly about the pillows. The knee pillow helps, but the best thing will be if you can get the hang of supporting your midsection with pillows. Lay on your side and roll slightly toward your back to lift your belly up a little, then stick a pillow under your belly. Then roll forward into the pillow you just placed and reach behind yourself and stick a pillow as close to your back as you can. Now when you roll back, you should be all wedged in and the pillows will be supporting a lot of the weight that was previously completely on your hip bone. I learned this when I was in the hospital on bedrest with my second, but only figured out how to get myself into the position without help during this last pregnancy. I also think it gets a bit easier to wedge yourself in the bigger you get, since there's more belly to get the pillow under. Good luck, and just think of the immediate relief you'll have as soon as your little baby is born!

I had a very difficult time with hip (also rib and sciatic) pain with both of my pregnancies. I tossed and turned all night long. The only thing that helped even a little bit was wedging a memory foam pillow between my legs to keep them spaced apart and alleviate the pressure of my widening hips. Walmart has them for about $15. You could also try one of the pregnancy pillows, but personally, I couldn't bring myself to pay $60 for a pillow I'd only use for 2-3 months. There were also nights I slept in the living room recliner like the previous poster. If it keeps you more comfortable, it's worth it. Ask your OB to be sure, but I think it's okay to take a Tylenol to help with the soreness. Best wishes!

Put a pillow between your legs. That will keep your hips in better alignment while on your side. I went through it with my last two pregnancies. Sometimes I would go out and prop myself up on the couch and sleep on an incline. That also helped. God Bless You!

My first suggestion is a Sleep by number bed. It is wonderful. However, in lieu of that, try putting a pillow under your knees. Evening your legs may help a lot. Good luck. Many years ago, I had the same problem when I was pregnant.

I had the same problem with my second. I got EVERY pillow in the house and set them up behind and around me on my bed. THat way I slept on my back in a reclined position. Once I was laying there, my poor husband had to tuck and prop until I was comfortable.

I also invetsed in a pregnancy pillow. That can wedge behind your back and you can still have enough pillow for your legs. Worked well for me.

Good Luck!

You poor thing that must be awful! The only thing I would recommend is sleeping with a firm pillow between your legs. I did that with both my pregnancies. If nothing works contact your OBGYN or try contacting a doula through your delivery hospital. They are so very helpful! Good luck!

I used one of those big body pillows when I was pregnant. I would lay on my side and put it in front of me parallel to me and then put one end between by knees or legs and put the body of the pillow under my belly and put the other end under my head and rest easy. It was kind of like I was spooning the pillow, but it worked wonderfully.

I always slept with a body pillow wedged between my legs and up and under my belly. I literally lifted my belly up away from the mattress and wedged the pillow under my belly. My husband also wedged a pillow in the small of my back and this helped as well. When I didn't feel like going through all of this just to go to bed, I slept on the recliner in the living room. I have heard that many women have had to do this and it was actually easier than the whole pillow ritual every night.

My hips hurt me more with my second child and I even had ligaments that stretched out around my hip bones and so every time I took a step my hip felt like it was popping out of its joint-which my doctor said it probably was. Once I had my daughter I got the okay to go to go to the chiropractor and I haven't had a problem since. Good luck! I know what it's like.

Sounds very painful Ashley,

I never had that much pain in my hips, but did experience more pressure in hips in my last(4th) pregnancy. Though some discomfort is normal, what you are experiencing at 5 months seems like too much and you would benefit from professional help. I encourage you to check out either a chiropractor who specializes working with pregnant women; or my midwife's husband is a myopractioner - along the same lines as a chiro., but deals with the whole body instead of just the spine. His name is Ed Sheridan, LMT, CFSII located in Scottsdale. He works with TONS of pregnant women and has a very gentle and calming spirit. I've had some work done with him and had great results. His contact info is ____@____.com or ###-###-####
You can also try prenatal yoga. Research which yoga would be best for you because even though all types of yoga are beneficial to body, mind, and spirit...each type can help with different issues. I know you are very busy, but you really do need to make some time to take care of yourself every single day to have a healthy pregnancy, healthy spirit, and be the best mamma to your son. It's hard to do all that when you are in pain. Talk with your obgyn and see what he/she recommends as well. I don't advocate for meds, but if there is anything that is safe for you to take during pregnancy that will help ease pain while you work to get healthier then it could be another route.
Much good energy to you and remember to take care of yourself as best you can so you can enjoy your journey.

In light,

I had this problem while I was pregnant too, and right around the same time when I could no longer sleep on my back. I hate to say it but I never really found a good remedy, although using a body pillow helped a little bit. I would sling one leg up over the pillow. Still, I had to switch sides frequently during the night. One thing I do wish I'd had time for was yoga, I think that would have helped. Hang in there, and I hope you find something to help, I have felt your pain!

I completely know what you are talking about....I described it as a "burning" sensation in my hips. It never really went away, but I did end up taking ibuprophin (I discussed this with my doctor) and eating something with a high protein content before bed. I thought it helped a little.

I had it horribly! I had a pillow behind and slightly under my lower back for support. A pillow under my belly. And a body pillow between my knees and ankles to take pressure off my hips. I got one of those pregnancy pillows and didn't think it was worth it. the padding in the middle wore out and broke down and it was too firm to go under my head. I loved the memory foam mattress topper until the very end of my second pregnancy. At that point I was so big I'd end up partially hanging off the bed at night and that didn't help! I ended up sleeping on the couch propping my back against the back of the couch and wedging more pillows in around me.Tylenol too!

Well I had the same problem! I would tell people of my pain and get no response... seemed like I was the only one!! Your pain seems to be getting pretty bad a little sooner than mine, but I would go prop myself up on the couch when it got really bad. This second pregnancy I borrowed one of those big pregnancy pillows which I think helped a bit (maybe you could get one from a second hand shop, I just saw one at Other Mothers on the west side). You can always take some Tylenol too :) Hope you're not late! Good Luck!
