Son Won't Take a Bottle Anymore

My son just turned 9 months last week. As of 3 weeks ago my son has refused a bottle. He is mainly breastfed, but he would get a bottle 3-4x a week from our nanny. He just started pushing the bottle away or turing his head. At his 9 month check-up the doctor said to see if he will use a sippy cup with water or the breast milk. I have been trying giving him both water and breast milk in a sippy cup and he won't take it. I am going to start weaning him in a month or 2. How can I get him to want a sippy cup or bottle again. I don't want to be tied to him to breast feed. I have an older daughter who I want to spend time with as well.

What can I do next?

Have someone else offer it to him while you are out of the house. He won't starve himself, but he may go on a bottle strike. Keep what you are doing though, and he will either wait when with the Nanny, or start taking the bottle/sippy cup (if a sippy cup, try it yourself so you know how easy/hard it is for him to drink from it - the Nuk seem the most natural to me).

keep trying, and have it be someone other than you that offers it. Try to not even be around so that the breast will not be an option.

Maybe try a small cup or a sippy with the double handles but without the lid? I know it's messy at first, but I had a hard time getting my son to drink from a sippy cup. He has an older sister and wants to do everything she does, including drink from a cup. He has been doing so since before he was a year.

When I went back to work at 12 weeks, my daughter wouldn't take my milk from the bottle. My husband tried many times, with me out of the house and never got her to take a bottle. I had a wonderful sitter and she tried a lot of things and discovered that my baby would take it only if it was almost hot. Your little boy probably will not ever take a bottle from you, but may take it from someone else, if they are willing to be patient and try a variety of things. Since he is probably getting a lot of other food, he probably figures if he is patient and just fills up on the other stuff, you will be home soon and can nurse him. Try having the nanny give him your milk first before other foods.

I would mix a bit of formula with the sippy of breast milk and see if he takes it. He may just need something different in the sippy. Also, tried different sippy cups.
