Son Sick for a Month

My 3 1/2 year old son has had a fever on an off since jan 20th. He also has had diarrhea for this time. Not daily diarrhea, but when he had a bowel movement it would be watery diarrhea with a bad smell. We haven't traveled anywhere. He has been to the doctor three times since jan 20th. First it was the flu, then it was not sure, then it was sinusitis because of the wet sounding chest cough. Not strep, negative on the stool culture, not an ear infection. Now after finishing his antibiotics his fever is back to 102 and he has chills. His forehead is hot and his body is cold as ice. What could this be? Are there any tests that can be done to determine why he is sick? What should i be asking the doctor? I am frustrated that he has been sick for so long.

What can I do next?

You also might go to a toddler lung specialist. My thoughts are with you it is sooo tough when they are sick for so long. You have that gut feeling though that it is not what the doctor says it is so definitley find another doctor.

anytime your child has a unexplained fever he needs to be tested for a urinary tract infection...those can make children very sick with all kinds of symptoms. if left untreated they can effect his reproductive system. you doctor sounds like a real winner...how about a second opinion?? take him to a new doctor!!!

Maybe doing a different kind of stool culture will help? My son was having severe diarrhea and stomach cramps when he was a few months old and the first culture didn't diagnose the problem because it didn't test for what he had. Also, the odd thing with stool cultures is that one may come back positive/negative and another culture later that day will come back the opposite. I have never had a medical professional tell me that, but I've had it happen enough times (to my child and other children I know) to know that it's true.

It's really hard when your child is consistently sick for such a long time. I don't know what else you can ask your doctor other than requesting that he test for any illness that your child could possibly have so you can get to the bottom of it already. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.

Go back to the doctor with a list of questions and ask them all! That is a long time to have an on & off fever.

Recently my 13yo went through 8 days of fever with upper respiratory symptoms. It just had to run it's course but our pediatrician asked to see us after 5 days with no improvement.

I'm so sorry.... sick kids are so hard to deal w/ as mothers because of our emotions! My sister told me of Juice Plus+ which made sense to me because it is fruits & veggies put into capsule (or gummy) form. Once I put my family on it I saw a huge health improvement because of the extra fruits & veggies we were then getting into our diets. So I don't have ideas as to why your son is sick, but if you want to know more about Juice Plus+ & how it would help your son's immune system be balanced, I could get you more info. or you can check out the following website.... jphealth.net/C..
Blessings to you as you deal w/ your sweet baby. Hope he feels better soon!

First off, I am sorry that your son is not feeling well. I know how stressfull it is for a parent when their child is not well.
I do not know the answer, but I am just wondering if it could be food allergies? It might also be a reaction to the cleaning supplies that you use.
Hope your son gets better soon.

My son was 2 1/2 and his stool was like water, he had a high fever for a few days then had low body temperature at night, complained of a stomach ache and lacked energy for 1 1/2 months! We had all kinds of tests done and found nothing. I was told that there are more and more inllnesses out ther that doctors have not fully researched yet. He was never given an antibiotic because blood work showed a virus and not a bacteria. He did get better on his own. I hope everything turns out as well for your son.

This has been a bad season for illness. I'm pregnant and I was sick for 3 1/2 weeks and my son for 2. The symptoms kept changing which is frustrating (ears, fever, cough, sore throat, etc.)

Try seeking out a "classical homeopath". The first visit is expensive and not covered by insurance, but I have had great success. I was inspired to educate myself since my positive experience and I now feel confident doing first aid type treatments on my family homeopathically. We never go to the doctor (in fact, I put off finding a pediatrician for over 2 years because I don't vaccinate and I never had any other reason to go). For sudden fever, try Belladonna in a 30C potency found at health food stores (a homeopathic remedy).

The other thing would be to try and boost the immune system. Probiotics for children can be found in powder form and mixed with whatever. If taking antibiotics, take the probiotics two hours after the antibiotics. If taken together, the antibiotics "kill" the probiotics and you don't get the benefit. Herbs for Kids makes Echanacea/Eyebright drops. Extra Vit. C, etc. Hang in there. I've been there and it's no fun and sometimes scarey.

Email me if you want more info on homeopathics. I'm no expert, but I read up on it and do it a lot.

well, the diarrhea can certainly be explained by the antibiotics. that stuff will mess up your intestines way after you're done taking it, from personal experience it can last more than a week after you've stopped taking it. that would also make him tired and feeling sick and not very hungry. (it would of course not explain the fever), just the malaise. have you read the side effects of the antibiotic he just had? i bet you can find many of the symptoms he has there.
many times after a bout of antibiotics your immune system is totally depleted and weak, making you even more susceptible to whatever illness is out there. it could be that it's not the same thing as he started out with, but that he caught something as he was recuperating from the first bout.
this has just happened to me, 10 days after getting sick i delivered some food to a family who was all under the weather and guess what? now i feel worse than i did 2 weeks ago. this too shall pass, you have been going to the doctor periodically to get him checked out and that is the right thing to do (things can complicate quickly) but he may have caught a second virus at the pediatrician's office!
good luck, it's hard when they're sick for so long.

What about Valley Fever? I don't know much about it, but I had an adult friend who just got it and had most of the same symptoms as you son in having. I guess it might be worth mentioning to your doctor and testing for. Good Luck! And I hope you little guy is feeling better real soon!

I once was in a place like yours where I felt helpless about my son's health. I did a lot of research and then decided to visit a holistic doctor. They are doctor's with degree's (google their credentials) they chose to treat the reason for the illness NOT just illeviate the symptoms with herbs and other complimentary natural solutions. I was pretty amazed with the results. I still believe in taking my 3 boys to their pediatrician & he is good about respecting that I some times prefer to go the "natural" approach. He actually cares his own children similarly and rarely gives them antibiotics!

Have your doctor check your son's blood work, that can tell if there's anything wrong with his immune system.

Hey C.S.

I would get him checked out for IBD. My friend's son had similar sounding symptoms. They had him in and out of the doctor's office and the emergency room for months. Finally he was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Now, your son may have just had a out of bad luck with one thing after another but if your gut tells you it's something else, I'd discuss a possible referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist.
Maybe do some research on the Net about IBD and see if it sounds like a possible diagnosis for your son.

Good luck

If you are not confident in your doctor then find a new one and have your son re-evaluated. He could have "Toddler Diarrhea" or it could be the anibiotics that are causing it or he could just be getting one bug after another. With "Toddler Diarrhea" they have to avoid dairy for three or more weeks and take a medication. If it's from the antibiotics a few weeks of yogart mught help.
Either way, I would take him to a doctor that you trust and insist that they find an answer.
Good luck.

Does this sound like your son?
My 12 year old (at the time) would wake up every morning with a temperature of 102-103, sick enough to not go to school, but then would be absolutly fine around 4 in the afternoon. At first I was thinking he was faking so he wouldn't have to go to school, but he LOVED school. So, like yourself we checked for everything. Finally a blood test showed that he had a "blood strep" which tests different then for the throat strep. So after missing almost two months of morning school, he got some medicine and got back to school. It was really wild.

Have you considered food allergies.. milk or other products. My sister in law has a son who is mildly allergic to milk and had chronic intermittent soft stool or diarrhea that was foul smelling. He had chronic "other infections- UTI or ear infections" which complicated the issue. I think he got other infections b/c his immune system was constantly challenged. She was at wits end.. so she tried Soy milk for 1 week and voila--- he immediately started doing better. Just a thought- can't hurt to try. Or at least bring up food allergies to your pediatrician.

Hi C S,
This is what we did. First, I always recommend, Dr. William Sears, pediatrician and his website, www.askdrsears.com.
Second, Dr. Sears recommends a whole food supplement, instead of vitamins, to strengthen his immune system.
Last, my grandsson at 18 mos had a recurring cold, dark circles under eyes, no weight gain and after many trips to doctor, the doctor suggested tubes in the ears! Of course, we did not want an operation! We discovered that the symptoms for gluten intolerance were very similar. So, we took gluten out of his diet and all his symptoms cleared up and the operation was not necessary.
It is normal for kids to be sick. That is how their immune systems builds defenses, however, children with a healthy immune system will bounce back in a day or two. So, you are right to be concerned. Good luck to you! If you are in the Phoenix area, we have two education lectures on March 4 and March 19.
In my business, we teach whole food nutrition, teach parents how to feed their children healthy, weight loss, etc and recommend a whole food supplement.

We went through that back and forth with the doctor. Finally some one made sense. It was Pnemonia. I would get a second opinion. Because I even took him twice in one week and all they gave me was antibiotics and oh its a virus bs. My son ended up 5 days in the hospital with severe pnemonia. I have since changed doctors. Please check it out. Not all doctors are right. I hope he gets well I hate to see kids sick, it breaks my heart. I didnt want to scare you with the pnemonia but I never new it was in the air. Weird>
