Son Is Getting Sick for No Apparent Reason!!

Hi,

I'm hoping someone else has been through this and can give me advice. My 5 yr old son has had several incidents when he has "all of a sudden" started crying saying his forehead and tummy hurt. He then proceeds to throw up. The next day - he's FINE. You wouldn't even know that he was sick the day before. I can't find any correlation between any of them. One was after school. One was after strawberry picking (thought maybe he ate too many strawberries) - oh, and that was fun to clean out of the car! The latest was after fireworks. We had just gotten into the car and he started crying saying his forehead and tummy hurt. This time, I was prepared and handed him a bag. He did get sick and the next day - all was well. My husband thinks it might be that he gets carsick - but the times after school and fireworks, he wasn't in the car very long at all ( a few minutes). I've looked at what he ate - and it was nothing unusual. Ideas? Anybody?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, the doctor thinks that my son may have migraines. All signs point to that. The only worrisome part is that there is no family history of migraines on either side. So, to be safe, we are going to a Neurologist and getting a second opinion and maybe tests. I will update again when I have seen the Neurologist. Thank you to all of you for your support!!!

My niece did this exact thing. She would be running around playing, then all of a sudden say she didn't feel well, and then almost immediately throw up. The pediatrician told her mom that it was migraines! Apparently this is a typical sign of migraines in young children. You need to try to get him to realize what he's feeling a little sooner so you can medicate him in time. You can give him tylenol or motrin, a cool cloth to the head or neck, and a dark room - it should help.
good luck!

This sounds similar to my 11 yr old daughter. We learned with her it's anxiety - how her body reacts to what she sees is a stressful situation.

Intially reading this I thought maybe it could be anxiety. Was he worked up, does he worry a lot? I know sometimes when I get too worried about anything I feel sick. It could also be some kind of allergy definatley take him to the Doctor. It's always better safe than sorry!! Good Luck!

Hi D.,
My daughter (now 15) always does not feel good after firewoeks. The lights hurt her eyes and she is senitive to the smells.
Don't rule out motion sickness. If he is looking up at the fireworks it could be throwing off his sense of balance.
Make sure to kept him cool and hydrated at times when you know he is going to be sick.
FYI, if he is having a coughing spell and then throwing up he may have asthma.

He may have an alergy to something in food. I think you should definatly get him to the doctor and have him tested for food alergies. It could be something that's common in his diet.

Hello D.,

I am sorry to hear about your wee one, but it did remind me of what my daughter has. At the age 4 she began to show very similar signs to your son’s situation. She did suffer from car sickness, but this new vomiting was not while we were driving, this was completely new. At first it started that she would only vomit once and as fast as it came it would be gone, but as she got older the vomiting grew worse and would sometimes last for hours or even days. Finally a doctor figured out she has CVS or Cyclic vomiting syndrome. Some of the signs she showed were headache, stomach pains and even sensitivity to light. Anyhow I thought I would leave you a few links and then maybe you could talk to your doctor about this condition to see if your wee one may suffer from this. Now I know that the info says they will vomit more than once, but as mentioned when this started with my daughter she would only get sick once and then would be fine, but as she got older the bouts got much worse. I hope this info helps out and that your wee one is just fine!

Have all of these incidents occurred in the car? If so, I think there is a strong possibility that he does get carsick. He doesn't neccesarily have to be in the car too long, especially on a hot day. My daughter tends to get carsick when she has had something sweet before taking a ride - once it was waffles, another time marshmallows, can't remember the other time or two - but I do remember that it always seemed to happen after something sweet.

I'd definitely take him to the doctor. A sudden headache with vomiting sounds like something worth having thoroughly checked out.

Do migraines run in either family? My son started getting them when he was 5, and vomiting is common in kids with migraines. My son would also be sick, then fine again either hours later if he went right to bed and could sleep good, or the next day. He ended up on medication to prevent them. He's now 14, and we've stopped the medication this summer and so far so good.

My husband, daughter and I can no longer tolerate wheat. All with different symptoms that go away if we stay off wheat. I'd suggest a food log, it paints a much clearer picture. And if you add the car rides in there too it will be quite scientific. Oh is he also getting any 2nd teeth?
Good luck, A. H

D., the strawberry picking I could probably reason away as the sun- but the others, well I have some questions to consider: 1st has there been noticeable stress at your house or someone close to your family anything like that might be your son's stress over the situation. Other than that an allergy is possible. Also my son has absence epilepsy and he occasionally gets severe headaches which have caused him to throw up. But just because my son has children's absence epilepsy doesn't mean your son does! The point was that severe headaches can be terrible, they can be caused by anything from too much sun, to not enough sleep, to stress, and even allergies, sinus problems, or foods. Maybe you could keep a journal of foods & activities!??
Hope this helps you have some ideas to evaluate the situation.
Good luck & God bless you & yours!

Hi D.,

My daughter did the same thing when she was five years old. It turned out she had migraines. She'd have a bad headache and couldn't handle having bright lights around. She needed everything quiet and darkened. I'd suggest either way, having a visit to your doctor. Hope it helps, S.

MY daughter has the same problem. It started when she was about 3. She would say her head hurt then vomit within several hours. she would be miserable until she got sick then she would be fine. We took her to a neurologist she had an mri and he diagnosed her with vascular headaches. She is 7 now and the attacks are farther apart they used to happen about once a month. We keep a headache log and record everything that happens at the time of the attack. We have yet to find a correlation. She has prescription meds that she refuses to take because the one time I gave it to her I didn't disguise the crushed up pill enough and shee hated the taste. Good luck! M.

Heya, I am an Neuro ICU nurse. Although these symptoms could be attributed to something major they could also mean nothing. Don't freak out yet. However, be aggressive with your doctor and make sure that your son gets fully tested. MDs often blow off mothers thinking that we are too anxious. Headache and vomiting can be from alot of things but it's the suddenness of the headaches that worry me. Good luck!!!

It sounds alot like my daughter who was diagnosed with migraines. Hers started when she was two and would often follow an afternoon at the park or some other ride in the car also so we first suspected car sickness. After many tests (MRI, CAT scan, allergy testing, etc,) it was determined to be migraines. We haven't been able to pinpoint all of the triggers, but some things that we do know that will spark a migraine are heat, fatigue, large movie screens and strawberries (which she loves)!

My son started getting migraines when he was almost 5. He would complain of head pain. He also struggled with constipation and would be asleep, sit up and throw up. Then he would go on like nothing happened. They did an x-ray of his belly and it was full of BM. There was nowhere for the food to go because everything was pushing up on his stomach.

We gave him a suppository and then Miralax to keep that corrected. They also put him on some migraine meds and everything has been good since then.

Good luck. I hope your baby feels better soon.

I know it it seems really young but maybe your son is suffering from headaches or migranes. OR... I don't want to scare you...but I wouldn't mess around with this. If he says his forehead hurts and then throws up, I would defineatly take him the doctor and request an MRI. Just to be on the safe side. It may be a brain tumor. HAs he fallen and hit his head at all? HE may be suffering from a concussion. Those are my thoughts. Just please get it checked out, and follow your motherly insticts you know best.

Hi D.,

I would like to know if your son has been in the car each time this has happened. He probably gets car sick, if that is the case. My girlfriends daughter used to be that way all the time. I drove with them in my car less than 10 minutes and I had to pull over because she was feeling sick. I would probably consult with the doctor just to be certain, but it sounds like that could be it.
Our son had a friend who was probably in 2nd or 3rd grade, took him to the monster truck show and on the way back after all the excitement he started throwing up in the back of my van! The parents knew about it, but forget to clue us in and he forgot to take his med's for it. So, it sounds like their is something you can get for him to help him out.
Hope you find out soon. Take care and Good luck!

My husband used to do that as a child. He would be playing just fine and the next thing you know - he was getting sick. His mom said he would then return to what he had been doing and be fine. No aparrent reason. It could be he just has a sensitive stomach and there is something at that particular moment bothering him.
Another thought is this - what was the weather like? If it was really warm, my son will get a headache that sometimes makes him sick. When he cools off and has some sleep - he is fine.

I hope this helped!

Hi,D.. I have a medical background (Resp.Therapy, Ret.)and he is getting sick for some reason. It is probably nothing but I would take him in to his Pediatrician for a complete check up with blood work and a unrinalyisis. If everything checks out but he has another episode, ask for a referral to a Gastroentologist. It is always better to err on the safe side. My son and daughter, now 35 and 32, spent most of their childhood at the doctor! Working in a hospital I knew and saw just enough to be medically paranoid! I am not trying to scare you but I think parents conclude it is "nothing" too often. I hope for the best for your little guy. Denise.

Other mom's already mentioned allergies, but what about the heat...too much maybe? Or it could be reactions to a type of cleaner that you are using. Those chemicals do funny stuff to us. If you look at my other responses I just left one that refers to a great book called Green This! by Diedre Imus. It's a great little read. Best of luck to you and your son!

Hi D....my son is 11 now and has done this since he was about 4. He gets migrains, all of a sudden..then he throws up and is fine. He also throws up if he is having anxiety issues (which he has a lot of), which could be the fireworks thing with yours. They now have me give my son adult strength motrin, and it helps a lot. The light bothers him, so he finds his own dark place, sometimes, it's under a table...LOL...but his is always from being carsick, anxious, or migrains. Hope it helps!!

I would suggest getting him in for testing. These could be early warning signs of an allergy or something more.

He is very young, and if he was bit by an insect carrying a virus or if it is really nothing... It is better to be safe and avoid something more serious!

I know when I get carsick, I am in the car for a bit and it is triggered by reading for at least five minutes. I am nauseated first, and then it can go away. This does not sound much like carsickness.

As much as I prefer the natural way, I would do this first to see what is up and then see what could be done. Depending on the diagnosis, you still can incorporate natural options if you choose - or add them in to a medical treatment (as I have seen anxiety and allergies listed).

Good luck and I truly hope he is okay!

Does it always occur after being in the car? How old is your vehicle? Some vehicles, especially when newer, have toxic "off-gases" of chemicals within the vinyl, plasics, carpet, etc. He may be very sensitive to them in such a confined area- as I was since I was a young child. Common toxins may include mercury, formaldehyde, and dioxin.
