I hope all goes well.
Maybe ask grandma to come over or some other support person to give you a break if you need it.
My 8 month old son is having surgery in the morning. Here is the short version of why: he was born 4 days shy of his due date. 7 pounds 10oz. He was 20 inches long. We found out right away that the nurse could not feel his right testicle. After a few days in the hospital and two ultrasounds, they found that he also does not have a right kidney. It took an extra day, but the left kidney started functioning with no problems. The ultrasound also found the testicle way up in his abdomen. He is having surgery to bring it down to where it is suppose to be. He will also be curcumsized. Spelling? I am very nervous about the surgery, but I am sure all will go as planned. It is very short, about an hour. My question to you all is if you have had any experience with this? What do I expect as far as recovery? All input and experiences are welcome. Thanks
ADDED: Thanks to those who already responded. Any advice on not feeding him? He can not eat anything after 530am. I will update after surgery. Thanks again
We are home and all went well. Thank you for your kind words and your prayers. I am sure he will be resting for a awhile. Like you all said, harder on me and my husband. Now we just let him heal.
I hope all goes well.
Maybe ask grandma to come over or some other support person to give you a break if you need it.
My son had surgery when he was 12mths old. Usually their testicles are suppose to drop on their own by their 12 month check up.
As for food and drink, just have it ready after the surgery cause I'm sure he'll be hungry. That's what we did.
My son had basically this same thing done. The only difference is that his were normal until he was 12 years old and then the testicle travelled north, so to speak. He had also not been circumsized (sp) at birth so when he had the surgery at 12 he was also circumsized. His surgery went very smoothly. Like you said it lasted about an hour. He was pretty sore for about a week. He pretty much sat around with a bag of frozen peas in his lap. Which probably won't work for a baby.
Good luck, I'm sure everything will go very smoothly.

My son had the same surgery when he was the same age as your son. Everything was easy. I was very nervous about it too. But he was up rolling around that same afternoon. I truly believe it was harder for us then him! Diaper changes afterward were probably the worst part of it because you need to keep the wound clean but he was only out of daycare for two days and he healed up just fine. They did give him some pain killer syrup which we only had to use once the night of the surgery but by the next day he was in no noticable discomfort. Please feel free to email if you have any other questions.
i don't have experience with this kind of surgery but... i do know of two other little boys who had to have that done. one is now 4 and the other is 6 and both are doing great. so you have a right to worry but it seems to me to be a fairly regualr surgery. please let us know what happens.
My advice on feeding. My daughter had tubes placed in her ears a couple weeks ago and she was scheduled for 730 am which meant no food after 130am. I woke at 1 am and "dream" fed her (I was still nursing full time) b/c I knew if I didn't I would be in for it in the morning. She was content until after surgery when she was able to eat again. Good luck!
sorry...just realized surgery was today.
My son had similar surgery years ago. He was a little older (closer to 3 years old) but recovery was fast and he was fine. I know he recovered faster than we did, he was up and playing in a few hours but I was exhausted for days.
J.,
I hope your son's procedure goes well. I know of kids who have had this done and I don't remember any probles for them. just keep in mind, it is much harder on us as parents than it is on the child. And he won't remember this as time passes- as it is forever ingrained in our grown up minds. :)
Although I do not have any experience with this situation, I just wanted to say that I hope that all goes well for you and your son and that I will be praying for you.
Hi J.
I know where you are coming from! Our son, now 3 1/2 years old, had this surgery done when he was 12 months old. His testicle was also up very high, in his abdomen. The surgery went very quickly and recovery was better than expected. He was crabby and sore for about 3 or 4 days but other than that he did great. All is still going well today. I wish you the best and will pray for your son but I'm sure everything will be just fine. Please let us know that everything went okay.

My son had surgery for an undescended testicle when he was one year old. The biggest risk of the whole surgery was the asesthetic. Everything went great for him and he is now seven. I don't remember the aftercare being real troublesome. Amazingly, it heals really fast.
J.- All will be fine- My friends son was born with some need for re-arranging. All went well and he was back at daycare withing a few days. Doctors do this surgery a lot! Take a deep breath and relax. My son has has minor surgery and my daughter as well-I understand what you are going thru and no amount of reassurance will help but, maybe it will make it a little easier for you.
I will pray for you both. Best wishes-H.
I thought that testicles ususally decended by themselves after a time (years?). But my main concern is why you would agree to letting them cut off a perfectly functional and healthy part of your son's body? You wouldn't do it to a daughter.
Neither my son (24) nor my 3 grandsons are circumscised and none has had any problem nor do any of the millions of men around the world. It is a barbaric custom, and a way of exerting ultimate power over another human being.
I am sending good wishes to your son for his surgery.
Best, gretta
My son just had surgery 3 months ago for a inguinal hernia repair, which is probably the same kind of incision. As for not eating, just make sure there is no food or drink around anywhere and make sure no one around him has anything to eat. My son didn't even notice he was hungry, but I did a good job distracting him with fun things.
I was a basket case, but everything went exactly as the Dr.s had promised. I was most nervous about the separation when the Dr would take him away from me to go back to surgery. They gave him Versed (he is 2 yrs old) and about 5 minutes later he started giggling. It made him so "drunk" they wheeled him away laughing his head off. That made all the difference for me. If your son has separation anxiety like mine, I highly recommend the Versed. They say it makes them cranky after, but they're going to be cranky anyway.
As far as recovery goes, my son didn't miss a beat. The first day he slept the whole day and the next day it was like nothing happened.
When I got to the hospital and saw all the little babies going in for heart or brain surgery it made me so thankful I was just there for a hernia, and I'm sure you'll feel the same way. Good Luck!!

hopefully i'm not to late. but my little boy had surgery when he was 8 weeks old. he had a hernia, we found it when he was 2 weeks old and it was the worst 6 weeks ever. i think the worst part was when they said that because he was so young he might not come out of the annasteasia?. but he did fine, they said that he could drink water up to 2 hours before surgery. with his age it should be the same, just bring something for him to eat or drink for when he wakes up. on the stitches, they will probably have the ones that dissolve, but if you have a lump 2 months after the surgery call the surgen to make sure.
