Son Hates Leaning Back to Rinse Hair

My 2 year old loves his bath but wails whenever we rinse his hair. He says he doesn't want to lean back so we've tried just tilting his head and even letting the water just run down his face. Any way we do it, he hates it. Any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your advice! We tried most of them, but unfortunately none worked. After seeing how much he loved playing in the sprinkler this summer, we tried a shower w/ him. He doesn't mind getting his whole face and hair in the water because he thinks it's like a sprinkler. So now we do showers instead of baths!

I use these toys that "stick" to the bath wall. The center of them are cut out shapes so when it's time to rinse I put one up out of reach and ask her to find the fish's eye, nose and so on.

teach him to float on his back it is summer time and then when you get in the tube he can practice floating you can teach buble blowing and all kinds of water safety at 2 they are willing to learn. Good luck!

I think I must be lucky! We've always just dumped a big cup of water over his head while he's looking down. It works for us. I think looking up makes a child feel less stable. He's only complained of shampoo in his eyes a few times. He's six now.

Sounds like my son! I've tried the washcloths held over his face, washcloths held on his forehead, the pitcher with the rubber piece. None of them work. The only thing that works with him is to use a bath visor. I wouldn't buy the ones that are pre-made, as they usually aren't tight enough to keep out water leaks. You can make your own that fit snugly. In the craft section of Walmart, you can find an 8.5x11 inch sheet of thin foam. You can measure your son's head along his hairline and cut an oval a little bit smaller than that on the foam sheet. Then cut a larger oval around it and you have your own bath visor. This has worked wonders for us and it is so cheap! Good luck!

My kids loved the moon in its different phases and we would close "our" eyes and look up at the mooon and I would have them tell me if it was full or a pie slice and engaged them with the details and the rinse was over before you knew it. They grew to love telling me about the moon every night. T.

My kids prefered to put a dry wash rag or a hand towel over their faces when they lean back to wash their hair - but, now they do fine with out it. They really don't like the water to run into their faces at all. Good Luck :)

I've heard of people using goggles. Not quite sure how that works w/the strap, but it might not be a big deal if his hair isn't super long.

Good luck!

Make sure the tub only has about 2" to 3" of water in it and let him just lay down. Once he sees that it is not over his face and he can relax he may love it. From there you can just swish the water around his hair to rinse.

My daughter had to have stitches in her forhead when she was 2 and for some reason became terrified of washing her hair for a few months and this worked with her.

They have these really neat cups now that you can get at walmart for pretty cheap. hard to describe but they fit against the forhead and you pour so it rinses hair but doesn't run down the face....they are really neat! my stepsons love it!

We used a large plastic cup to rinse hair for years becasue my son hated the hand held shower or laying his head back much. At 13 he rinses his own hair but still hates getting his face wet in the shower. Some of the ideas mentioned just might work Goodluck.

We had the same problem with my now 3 yr old, but somewhere along the way I started saying "ready, 1, 2, 3" and then pouring the water over her head. That way she has a "warning" so she can close her eyes & hold her breath.

My son hated it too. I tell him to look for birds, airplanes, moon, stars, anything that flys or in the sky. Then I'll throw in an elephant, or something that doesn't fly, which he thinks is silly and corrects me. While he's looking up, we rinse his hair. I hold the wash towel over his forhead to keep it from getting in his face. It works pretty good. He doesn't mind it now.

We have a hand held shower head (on an extra long hose--you can find them at Lowe's or Home Depot). With our girls we have always drained the water out of the bathtub and had them lay down on the bottom of the bathtub and then used the hand held shower head to rinse their hair. We get the top and sides of their head rinsed really good and then when they sit up all we have to do is a quick rinse on the back of their heads. We get no water in the face and they don't have to sit in an uncomfortable position while I rinse. We did learn that we had to drain the tub, first though or just have a very shallow amount of water because they didn't like to lay back and get water in their ears.

Good luck.

hey J. S I'm sure you have a lot of advice by now, haven't read any responses, but when my youngest 12, was little she hated rinsing too. I found a bath visor at wal mart that fits over her head and the water runs off the end. she would laugh after that,. she didn't mind it anymore.... hope you can find one.... God bless, Terri

There's a pitcher with a stretchy rubber bar that goes across the spout that you hold up to the head for kids who have that issue. It's at onestepahead.com

Hope this helps!

My daughter was the same way. We brought her swimming mask in from the pool and she puts it over her nose and eyes. Worked like a charm!

My two year old hates to have his hair rinsed, too. But it has to be done, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. If he's like mine, he cries about everything anyway... getting in the tub... getting out of the tub... haha I can't win!

My (now 3 yro) hated it for over a year and finelly I got a little watering can (plastic from Dollar Tree) and let her rinse her own hair (I used a cup and we did it "together"-one of the things I encouraged her to try sharing with ;-). She was fine with me using the cup and her using the can I also made sure she had her eyes closed first (I'd remind her "OK, it's time to rinse out all the shampoo, are you eyes closed?" or something of the lilke).
She STILL doesn't want to look at the ceiling and get her hair rinsed, but she now uses the cup and "does it herself" I have final say on if the shmp. is out or not and if she doesn't want to rinse it anymore I'll tell her "That's fine, I'll do it-if you leave any suds in it makes your head itch" She hates for her scalp to itch and is in a stage where she wants to "Do it by myself" so this works well for us.
Hope it helps you-you are at the most challenging age (So far ;-).
Good Luck,
C.

My 2 1/2 year old is the same way, she hates water in her eyes or ears. Finally I got her to look up at the ceiling so I can carefully rinse w/o getting water on her face, she was fine with that once she realized how well it worked.
