Hello Everyone,
Since my son turned 1 in December he has been on and off antibiotics, mainly for sinus infections and two ear infections. I hate having him on antibiotics all the time. My question is should I be worried about something more serious going on? He gets a runny noise where he can't breathe unless he is up right and coughs allot. He doesn't have a temp. And it really doesn't seem to bother him. But it is affecting how he sleeps, and his stools. Since there are no over the counter meds that I can give him, I am not sure what I can do to ease the congestion. I am not sure what else to do. We have a cool humidifier next to his bed, I use Vicks vapor rub, when my husband or I take a shower we shut him in the bathroom so that he sits in the warm steam. I understand that it is that time of year for colds, but it just seems like the medicine helps him get better then we are off for a week or two and need to go right back on the medication. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

hi,i'm carol......50yrs mother of 5....2 still @ home.........yes ,i do believe you have a reason for concern.....may i suggest you take your child to an ear ,nose, throat doctor..your child may need tubes in his ears,to assist him with the drainage from the sinuses........get a referral from your child's doctor..if you do not have a regular pediatrician or family physician ..then go to a public health dept. and sign up for one ..and it is based on your income, you may qualify for medical financial assisstance,go through the paperwork it's worth it..........now,back to your question......your child may have other underlying conditions thats' my concern, but ,because he is always on antibiotics it is hard to figure out what is going on.....antibiotics are good, but, not healthy for growing teeth in the long run.........and your child maybe getting used to the doasge of medication, that's why it is becoming less effective and may need to be change/////ALSO, you may need to consider time of year when pollen, dust ,hayfever, smog in air ..changes in the weather.......sinusitis also runs in family....ASK your doctor ,even if it is an emergency room physician ...if they can check for allergies.and see if allergic to certain foods, ask about "Hyperactive Airway Reponse" or "RSV"a respiratory virus......this is my opinion....let me know,be patient ,it take time, warm vaporizer is better and mild air conditioner, lots of liquids and most of all prayers, get lots of rest,a tired mom is very little help, rest keeps you healthy and strong, peace and love, carol

I would suggest seeing an ear nose and throat doctor. Allergies are a great possibility and they would also be able to adivise you on this. As someone mentioned before milk could be the cause, you could try soy. Acid reflux can also cause sinus problems. Im not exactlly sure how but that is what my allergist told me just last week.

my son was his age when he started doing that. after many countless trips to all sorts of doctors this year (he's now 5yrs old) he was diagnosed with chronic sinus disease, basically it's a sinus infection that takes up to 4 mo. of antibiotics to clear up and the slightest thing can set it off again. he had 2 cat scans & 4 xrays for diagnosis. he has had alot of other problems, and has had 2 surgeries for ear tubes, one for tonsils & adnoids, 2 for having his sinuses corterized, and 3 for stomach ulcers. he's very active and to look at him you wouldn't think he's been through all that, but when he goes to lie down to watch tv or to bed boy does the frieght train sound. his doc gave him antibiotics & said to give him triaminic thin strips for stuffy nose before bedtime it also has an antihistimine in it. i really hope your doc finds the source & you don'thave to go through what all we did. god bless!

They should be finding out why he is having this problem. Just a month or two ago the Dayton paper had a article in it about the antibiotics do not really help sinus infections. I would try a chiropractor before putting him on antibiotics for months.
My one son had same problem and I had tried the tubes and some antibiotics. Did not work, changed his diet and got him adjusted now her rarely ever gets sick!

J. have you checked into milk allergies. My son was constantly getting ear infections and runny noses. He was constantly on antibiotics. Never had any temperature. Occasionally he would throw up for no reason and be fine for the rest of the day. When we switched him to soy milk it was a total change like day and night. Since then my son hasn't even been to see a doctor for ear infections anymore.

My son went through this. Actually twice now. The first time we had his adnoids removed and tubes put in his ears. He was off antibiotics for two years. Then he got sick again, and he was on antibiotics for 20 days straight with no reliefe! We just had a second surgery which removed his tonsilles, what had grown back of the adnoids and put tubes in again. We haven't had a single problem with being sick since. Recovery the first time around was a day, the second time took almost two weeks. It is an amazing difference.
Our ENT was in our group and did have the past medical history of my son upon arrival. He said lets schedule the surgery with one look at him both times! :) It was easy and great.

HI, My son was on antiabotics for almost 18months due to ear infections and strepthroat. I finally got a refural to a ent and this past Jan the took his tosils and anoids out. He has been great since, not even a cold. Now I have my nephew who has been having ear infections for the last year and on meds. He just had his Tubes put in his ears today. i also worried about being on the meds for such a long time. We have no lingering affects from them now. A good thing to do is make sure you write down every infection he has date/ what meds he was put on. Cause for some reason the ent will expect you to know all this when you see them, they won't get med records them self. And my nephew had to wait 2 more months for the surgery because of his mom not knowing exacley when he had the infections. And when your child is sick every couple of months then it is hard to keep track. Good luck

Hi
Are you taking him to an ENT? If not try going to one. Does he have allergies? Need to look into that also. ATBs will give anyone diahrea because as it kills all the "bad" bacteria in the intestine, it also strips the "good" ones out. If he like yogurt give some daily. That will put back the good bacteria in his intestines.
