Solid Food for Almost 6 Month Old

My son is eating solids, has been for at least a month now. He usually eats a veggie or fruit w/cereal at lunch, and a veggie and fruit for dinner. He is eating only 1 tablespoon of cereal or oats a day...

I cannot really find any site that tells you what a 6 month old should be eating on a regular basis and I know all babies are different. My son just seems hungry still...I went to the geber website and they seem to want me to feed him LOTS more than he is currently eating. But other than that I can't find any info.

My doctor told me more than 28-32 oz of breast milk/or formula a day is too much and could cause anemia (spelling?), most of the time he exceeds this number and he still wakes up during the night more than once to eat.

If you have any info or website please HELP! :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I contacted my pediatrician and she told me to feed my hungry boy, as long as he was still in taking enough milk that added food was not going to hurt him at all! She said a third meal and a late night snack (cereal) would be a good place to start….  this makes me happy maybe we will get more sleep!!

I have a 5 month old and I am starting with the stage 2 foods but some other mothers said start solid foods and what kind. Sorry to invade your question but I have the same problem when to start what and is it too soon. I mean she is hungry and a pretty petite baby. I don't want to stunt her growth or something. FYI new mother can you tell!

I'm not a doctor, but I am a mom and I say...if your child is hungry...feed him! Period!

My son started solids around 5 months, ease into it and be sure to leave gaps between trying new stuff to look out for allergies. I have heard it works well to move through colors, like orange foods, yellow foods, etc.

My son is almost 2, still breastfeeds 4-5 times a day, eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner, snacks, and drinks probably 8 oz soy milk, 6 oz. juice, and 6 oz. water everyday. He's normal weight, just has a good appetite, so don't fret too much, go with your gut on what your baby needs!

If the baby is hungry feed him. :-) My 5 month old will polish off a whole container of stage 2 foods PER FEEDING! (2 x's a day)
And she's still a great nurser... She's running in the 50th percent for weight so its a good amount for her...
Feed the baby what he wants... and it will vary by the day... Sometimes my little one will only eat a few bites of cereal at a time and other times she has eaten 3 bowls of it in one sitting! :-)

Every baby is different.

My brother's kids (and they were tiny) would polish off 32-36oz of formula per day, but they didn't eat well until they were close to 9 months old.

28-32oz is FINE unless they are on whole milk--then it can cause anemia--formula and breastmilk have all the nutrients they need (with the possibility that by 6 months the mother's iron reserves no longer go to baby and they may need an iron supplement).

my youngest went straight to table food--refused baby food altogether, she ate tiny pieces of whatever we were eating and would gnaw on french fries at that age...

you can try wholesomebabyfood.com

MOST babies by 6 months can handle baby cereal made with fruit juice (the acid and vitamin C aid in iron absorption) or formula/breastmilk or fruit in the morning and at least a small jar of fruit or veggie in the afternoon, some take none and some take far more, like my oldest.

Every child is different. I am not quite sure why your doctor told you that 28-32 oz of formula was too much. My told me that's what I was supposed to be feeding them. He told me that they needed at least 28 oz of formula a day until about 11-12 months when I was weaning them off a bottle.
Now, for the baby food. I believe that we were on a whole jar of Step 1 foods at lunch and dinner and about 3 oz of cereal in the morning, plus all the formula/breast milk. We moved up to step 2 foods by 7 months old and just kept on going from there.
