Software for Toddlers

My two year old daughter has begun to show an interest in the computer. I have done some research and found the Comfy Software program, although that's a bit pricey. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good software program that is easy to use, toddler friendly and keeps an active kid engaged? She's only two so she doesn't have that much patience for mouse clicking but a program that easily responds to any touch or movement would be great. Reader Rabbit has a good program and I've seen some relatively inexpensive computer keyboards for toddlers that come with software programs, but very few (KidTech, KidzMouse-which has one keyboard and it's Sponge Bob, and Comfy-which is too high end, are the only ones I've seen). There are some pre-computer things that can be used with a DVD player (Little Leaps, Leapster and there's one other out there) only but we don't want anything that's tv related. We'd rather it be something attached to the computer because we use it alot and rarely watch t.v.

If you are looking for something on the internet, a great site is kneebouncers.com. It is an interactive site that builds on a child's cause and effect recognition.

You do not use a mouse and can hit any key to play. It has several interactive games on it.

My 2 yo loves going there and making stuff happen.

Hi my daughter is 2 and a half, and she also loves the computer. she watches the disney channel alot ( mickey mouse clubhouse and little einsteins--EXCELLENT for toddlers). There is a site called www.playhousedisney.com she loves it and there are so many things to do, i recently taught her how to use the mouse so once i get to the site i can leave her at the computer for a while and she keeps herself entertained and actually knows what shes doing, its amazing!!
i know you said that you dont let her watch too much tv, but those 2 shows are great, especially little einsteins they teach about classical music and art, its my daughters favorite show

Hi K., My daughter loved computers at an early age too. We got her Sesame Street & Jumpstars software. You can go to babyzone.com, they have great recommendations. Hope it helps.. But also the Internet itself, like PBSKIDS and Noggins have nice games also that are educational. Computers are great, by the time my daughter was in Kindergarten, she already knew how to write her name and count to 100. Also as years go by, she has become a great reader and is always ahead in the class in reading. Good Luck...

Hi K.,

I see you mentioned Reader Rabbit and that's just what I was about to suggest. My son started on the computer when he was just about 15 months old. We started with Reader Rabbit Baby & Toddler. You can get it on Ebay for about $10. It's a GREAT program! Mouse-clicking is not required and it teaches shapes, colors, animals, etc. Now my son is 4 and he knows how to navigate to and from all of his favorite websites!

I HIGHLY recommend Reader Rabbit Baby & Toddler to start!

HI K.,
My daughter also loves computer but she is 3 and she actually learned fast when it comes to the mouse. SHe goes on website like NOGGIN,PBS,and her favorite barbie.I have them saved in the computer so she knows which website to go to. I think its best for you to get her,her own lil laptop computer. They have a couple for her age.I was going to get one for my almost 2 year old son I beleive it was a v-tech, for 24.99 in walmart.com.It has a lil mouse keyboard a small screen, games, music plus learning activities.Check it out and see. These kids now a days are very fast learners,we think they wont understand but look at my daughter everyone is amazed when they come to the house and see how she goes to the website and plays her learning games.Hope i was helpful. Take care.
Sincerly,
D.

I got software for my kids from two places: Curcuit City and Target. The dollar section in Target has stuff sometimes. If you have a playstation 2, there are Sesame Street games (Elmo Numbers & Elmo Letters) Check them out!

Noggin.com.... Nickjr.com.... http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/ (this sight has tons of interactive stuff all the way thru highschool and it has printouts.)It has story readers that you click on the mic and it reads to you and you pick out answers. suggest working wiht the litle one with it. its very neat. my son loves being on it and heloves the monster mixer. (you create scary music) just keep clickin around there is so much to do.
