Soft Spot Scare

I recently took my 3 month old to her 2 month checkup back in May and we saw the nurse practioner, she was concerned b/c Ellery's soft spot is more closed up then normal at that age. It freaked me out b/c i came back to work and got online and read up and saw "surgery, surgery, surgery" which scares me to death. I had to take her back a week later for a cough and runny nose and the actual doctor didn't seem as concerned. But as a parent i am worried. Has anyone else ever encountered this? Any advice would be great. Thanks!

What can I do next?

This still brings tears to my eyes as I recall like yesterday when the doctor told me he was concerned about our son's soft spot. Our regular ped was on maternity leave and another was covering. I had noticed our son's head seemed to be shaping a little strange but all kids are different so did not think about it until dr said something. He took our baby and said he wanted someone else to look at it. He came back and gave me the news of concern. After xrays and consult w/ other doctors it was determine our son would have to have cranial facial surgery. Since you live in LA it might be if that is the case you would come to Dallas at Childrens where our son's was done. All were great. I pray that you do not have to go through this. Our son is now 11 years old (almost 10 1/2 years since he had it done) and no memory just the scar (which I tell him when he plays football in hs that he shave his head just to scare the other guys). But do pay attention and get it checked out if for nothing more than peace of mind. Please feel free to pm me if something is determined to be wrong. God bless.

I have a friend that her son did have to have surgery because the soft spot in the back was closing prematurely. He went thru it with flying colors and looks perfectly normal. But of course she was scared to death too but knew surgery was the only option given what would happen if they didn't have the surgery.

I would make a follow up appointment in about 1 month after her most recent to have them check her measurements to make sure the skull growth is on track.

I think sometimes the "internet" does us more "harm than good". If your pediatrician isn't concerned then I wouldn't be worried.

The doctor's never said anything about it, but I don't recall my first son (born via unplanned C-section) having a soft spot at all! BUT - if the nurse is concerned, then you need to follow up with the doctor.

This son has a rare *but treatable* medical condition that is unrelated, as far as I know, to his skull size but has NO developmental issues whatsoever.

Hey J.,
there is nothing to worry about, it's just something you keep an eye on. My oldest had an extremely small soft spot and we watched it carefully to make sure it didn't close too soon. It did not. The pedeiatrician is checking them on all babies at every visit. All fontanels/ soft spots close at different rates and vary in size. The thing is you don't want one to close too early. Just because your baby's is smaller doesn't mean it will close faster! Just keep an eye on it and ask them to check it at every visit not just well visits for extra comfort!
Will say a prayer that your little one's soft spot closes as slow as needed.
