My daughter took my 2mo old grandson (Leeland) to his ped for his 2mo. old checkup and the ped said that his softspot was almost closed. She has scheduled him for an xray of his head next week. My question is why and what is the procedure for the something like this. Worried Grandma

What can I do next?

Our pediatrician said the same thing, and sent us to a cranio facial surgeon where he did a CT Scan of his head. The doctor did say that they were closing quickly, but said every kid develops at their own pace, and it's not necessarily bad that it's closing this early. From the scan we saw that he was just fine and normal. He felt my older sons, who is 3, head while we were there and said he had the exact same shape. We just musn't have noticed it as much because his hairline was much more different than our youngest. I just wanted to give you a positive story, and let you know it could all be ok. We were lucky and got into the scan the next day after our ped recommended it, but that one day I was in tears almost all day, so I know it's stressful. Good luck to you, and God bless.

Our son had the same thing happen to him and was caught when he was 8 weeks old. We had noticed his forhead seemed kinda pointy but every baby is different and his regular ped had not said anything. The visiting ped noticed right away. After xrays and the scanner, it was deterimined our son needed surgery. If you research early closing of sutures, in some cases if not fixed it can lead to mental retardation due to lack of space for the brain to grow properly (it is more true according to the research we did at the time with certain sutures). Our doctor at the time did not do surgery until the child was 6 months. Our son had the cranial facial surgery at 7 months and follow ups for many years. He is now 11 and he is fine and the dr even told us at the time he could play football. We were at Children's hospital in Dallas and I cannot say enough wonderful things about the hospital, nurses or doctors. God bless you. If you daughter needs someone to talk to even tho it has been a while since our son had it, please pm me and I will give you my number.

They are just checking to see if the sutures are closing prematurely. If they close to early the brain does not have room to grow and they go in and create more room in the cranium (skull) to allow for the growth.
