My 4 yr. old is starting soccer on Saturday April 4th, I have already purchased the shin guards and practice ball she needs. However I need some advice with the shoes; does she need spikes or another type of shoe? Thank You for any advice.

What can I do next?

At that age they usually say they can just wear regular sneakers but my son is 6 and now they are asking them to wear cleats.

My daughter is starting soccer this weekend too! You aren't by any chance with the Pottsgrove Soccer club, are you? :)

As far as shoes go, I believe soccer cleats are preferred. They are different than lets say a baseball cleat. We got ours at Dick's Sporting Goods. Just ask for soccer cleats and a salesperson will be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck and have fun!

You have to check with the legue. A lot of the preschool scoccer leagues do not allow spikes because of their inexperience in the game.

My son is starting this Saturday also. We were told to get him cleats, we got them at payless for about 17 bucks.

My 3 year old is the same way. The doctor thinks it could be an allergy. We just haven't been able to pinpoint. Like you set there is no set time that it happens. I know this isn't a lot of help but atleast you know you aren't the only one lol

As your league...e-mail the coach or check the website. Our kids did not need them when they were in the preschool classes/league, but once they were 5 and hit kindergarten, they had to be in soccer cleats. We always get them at Dick's for a reasonable price. I'm not sure about the advice re waiting to see whether soccer is her thing...by the time your child decides this, she'll be in a different show size! My kids always need new cleats every season...soccer cleats from the fall don't fit for soccer or baseball in the spring! Have fun with it!

Your coach or team mom should be telling you what your child needs, but yes, she will need some cleats. Call your coach or team mom to verify everything you need.

My son started when he was 4 and he just needed soccer cleats. You can get them for $15 to $20.

Make sure she has soccer type of socks to go over her shinguards....it will keep them in place and cleaner. They will tell you she can wear tennis shoes...but when the grass is the least bit damp/wet, she will be slipping everywhere. I would get her some soccer cleats. You can get them anywhere...if you want them cheap, I think Walmart carries black ones. If money is not an issue, I know Dicks has pink ones or pink and black.

Typically you do need the soccer cleats, a ball, shin guards, and socks. Dick's sells a package deal which makes the whole thing more affordable when you purchase everything together. You can either buy an Umbro package or an Adidas or Nike package deal.

I just got pink and black cleats in Walmart for $10. Cleats are not required but I would highly recommend them -better support, less slippage on the field thus less chance of injury. There are 2 kinds of cleats-one with a rubbery type rounded nubs and the other with straight metal spikes. Please do NOT get the metal ones-they increase injuries to other players and if your daughter falls with her foot under her, she will be injured too.It is not necessary to buy the expensive cleats. The cheaper ones hold up fine and usually your child will outgrow them before the next season. I agree with using the soccer socks since they are thicker and tighter than a normal sock they will hold her shin guards in place and won't fall down around her ankles.

My daughter also started soccer @ 4 years of age.
Our coach actually advised against the spikes until we were sure soccer was "her thing" or until it gets to be competitive. You will be glad she is playing. Sports are good in so many ways!
Good Luck to you guys!

D.: when my son participated in soccer, I did purchase him cleats, but most of the children did have sneakers. However, I wanted him to be comfortable with as much support as possible, as well as be able to stand the terrain when it was muddy. Good-luck to your little princess=:)

I have a 5 year old and I did the spikes for her. From what I heard, it helps them keep from twisting an ankle. They are pretty pricey but I guess it's worth it!

Hi,

My son plays soccer and started around that age. I got him cleats because it dos help grip the ground on those days when the soil may be a bit wet and loose from rain. It isnt necessary though so it is totally up to you. Have fun with it....it is such a cute age to watch them play sports!! :)

Hi D., Yes, she needs outdoor soccer shoes. They do have cleets, but they are not the sharp kind. It helps the kids when they run on grass/wet/muddy fields. Go to Duhamn's we always find great prices there, and they always have good prices on plain black soccer shorts too. Don't forget soccer socks either. I always stick to black when ever possiable since it goes with every color team shirt. I also recommend you get a pair of nylon pants for her to wear to/from the field and in the rain (yeah, they play in the rain unless there is thunder/lightening). I usually find those in the boys department at Walmart for a good price. Soccer is a great sport for girls and boys to enjoy my youngest has been playing since she was 4 (about 8 years now!) and still loves it. Have fun!
