So What Is the Deal with Price Matching?

I am trying to understand this one... If you have a flyer for a grocery store that offers a really good price on something, then why would you go to Wal-Mart to try to get the same price? Why wouldn't you just go to the store that offered the best price for something? Are you really saving more money for doing the price-match thing at Wal-Mart? I have to admit that it drives me crazy when I get behind someone in the checkout line that is doing it....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sarah: I can completely get why you do this if the stores are not close to each other. However, I live in a city area and these stores are literally 2 minutes from each other.

How do you calculate real savings though? Wal-Mart is consistently the cheapest in price for most food items in my area. I think that some folks misrepresent how much they actually save this this practice. For example, if Publix is doing a buy one get one free deal on cereal and the price of one is $4.25, then you would save $4.25 if you bought this at Publix. However, if the price of the same item is $2.99 at Wal-Mart, then you really aren't saving $4.25 to buy the item at Wal-Mart with price matching....you are only saving $2.99...

Well, if that store is across town I would use the savings in gasoline instead of saving anything....

And Walmart does not match any prices except the ones that are for specif prices, if it is BOGO they do NOT match it. They only do the matching if the item is identical and the price is posted, such as 32 oz. bottle of Hershey's chocolate syrup for $1.68. The normal price might be $2.34 at the competitors store but usually Walmart has it for $1.98.....for an example. You are saving a bit more but it's not worth driving across town unless it is for something that is a really good deal.

For another example, Albertsons has name brand milk on sale for $2.98 per gallon and Walmart is $4.25 I can tell you I will go to Albertsons and buy several gallons of milk for the kids. Let's say I don't care for the taste of that brand of milk, I would still get myself a gallon at Walmart so I could enjoy drinking milk when I wanted it. I would be saving the $1.27 per gallon since Walmart does not carry that brand so it would be worth the drive.

If it was the same brand that Walmart carried then I would price match and only go to one store.

I can't speak for everyone, but lets say I want to do my weekly grocery shopping at walmart and krogers has a couple of things I need on sale but walmart is cheaper on everything else. The krogers and walmart are a half an hour apart and each a half an hour from my house, why would I drive to both when I can just drive the 1/2 hour to one (for a total trip of 1 hour instead of 1.5hrs)

Walmart "usually" has a lower price on everything, so it is best for one stop shopping and could potentially save on gas. We just moved to FL and I tried to just go to Publix because they had a deal on a few items but realized that the savings were being undercut by the other items not on sale.

It does work and I've been doing it for years. They just expanded their policy a while back. I did a google search and found a great explanation and download on their corporate website (not Walmart.com). It isn't always a savings, so you have to do your homework and price shop. Last week, I did a price match with manufacturers coupons and I was on cloud nine, lol! I always keep mine in order and know exactly how much each item should be. It's helpful now that you actually don't have to have the ad with you, though I always do. Sorry if it bugs you. Those dollars saved, though, is worth the little extra time for most. Especially in economic times as these. ;)

The only reason i do it is because walmart is the one stop shop
When i remember to do it
People do get a discouraged look on their face when i do but honestly does 2 mins of my extra time at the register hurt anyone? Nope and it benefits my pocket. However i do apologize if i see people get aggreviated.
Bottom line gotta go to walmart anyway so why go to several different stores....enough said

Well for starters..........you couldn't pay me to go inside a Walmart or Sams.

What you say does make sense though... why use the extra gas, wear/tear on car to drive to Wally world when you can go to the location advertising the product. Done deal....

My time = $$. That is so not worth my time.

Also..... Are you aware that a lot of companies will not have manufacturer's warranties on products if they are purchased from Wally World or Sams? Yep... they are cheaper for a reason.... Wally World demands cheaper products... in turn, you think you are getting the same name brand as elsewhere but you are not. Check it out.. it's been all over financial news and reports for years.

ETA: check it out Mandy and you'll see that I am correct. No offense (intended or taken) We are in the raw materials industry and I can name names of companies who will buy cheaper materials to manufacture products for Walmart because Walmart demands it. We sell 1 grade of material to a specific manufacturer by the truckloads and when he is manufacturing for Walmart, PER Walmart specs, he buys the lower grade materials. Fast Company magazine has articles from as far back as 2003 detailing Walmart processes with vendors. We deal with distribution centers as well. It is easy to cover things up so employees don't know the real deal.. In any case, best wishes to your brother. We'll keep selling the low grade product to the walmart manufacturer and the high grade to everone else. Either way, we make our money.

To me it isn't worth the hassle but the theory is you get the low everyday prices of Wal Mart and the lost leaders from the grocery stores. Wal Mart doesn't offer lost leaders beyond the price matching.

I tried the price matching for a month and saved $5 each time. I decided that it wasn't worth the hour and a half that it took me to figure everything out each week. I don't even shop at Walmart anymore. I shop and Fresh and Easy and Super Target with my 5% off debit card. =) I think I save more that way.

First I have to disagree with tf, Walmart sells the exact same product ls as a target or any other store, and I have never had an issue getting the manufactor to replace a defective item because it was purchased at wal-mart. As far as price matching I would only see the point of using it for high $ items, I couldnt stand there and match soups and beans.
ETA I know all about Wal-Marts products my brother was a driver for 6 years and now works out of the distribution center so he knows where the product come from.
