SO Hungry! :)

Hi Everyone!

I just found out that I am about 5-6 weeks pregnant. I am still nursing my 15 month old toddler. I suspected that I was pregnant about a week or two before I took the test because I had been so tired, but the last few weeks I have been starving all the time! I wake up at night and my stomach is growling! I know that when pregnant and nursing your body needs extra calories, but I do not remember being this hungry the last time around!

Any suggestions on healthy snacks that will stick with me? I have been eating lots of almonds, and bananas and fruit... but am not remembering what I ate the last time around, and am drawing a blank on good easy snacks to have. I know I used to do Luna bars but am watching my sugar intake a little closer this time since my urine tests usually came up with sugar in them during my last pregnancy (my blood sugars were fine, I was just spilling into my urine so I had to watch sugar intake for that reason).

Thanks, in advance, for your advice and tasty snack ideas!

J.

So What Happened?

Thanks for your suggestions. I hard boiled a dozen eggs and have been eating those, and also bought some cottage cheese. I also bought some Trisket crackers (for the whole grain) and am working on eating a bedtime snack of an apple and cheese or popcorn which seems to be helping.

I nursed until 6 months pregnant with my second before I weaned my first, the second was 9lb 7 oz so I know I had plenty of calories for the baby to grow :) I'll keep eating! I had no idea I needed an additional 1,000 calories! That is a lot, so I won't worry about over eating... even though my husband has been making fun of me for eating more than him :)

I also don't really worry about gaining too much during pregnancy, I seem to be blessed with the ability to shed the weight (I gained about 30 the last two times) within a year just by nursing.

Thanks again!
J.

I nursed while I was pregnant too. Remember you need an additional 1000 calories on top of your regular amount. Things like peanut butter (natural) are an easy way to add extra fat & calories. As far as anything I cannot think of anything else really. I started out a little overweight when I got pregnant with my son & was nursing my daughter. I lost 10 lbs in the beginning & did not gain any weight until my 6th month (after which I put on 35 lbs). He was born a healthy 8 lbs 8 oz & was a week early. So don't be worried about harming your baby by nursing your body will make up for it. Just make sure to eat plenty of healthy foods as well as some treats don't worry about overeating. The weight will really melt off if you are going to tandem nurse.

Foods high in protein will help you stay full longer.
I LOVE the South Beach Living cereal bars. They are high in protein but relatively low in everything else. I have compared them to other granola and cereal bars and they are much better for you. They taste really good, too! I practically lived on them for the beginning of my second pregnancy.
You can also make healthy muffins; I have great recipes for bran and pumpkin-oatmeal.
One of my family's favorite snacks is string cheese. Yum!
Cottage cheese is good, as are pb&j or hot turkey & cheese sandwiches.
Good luck and congratulations!

Dear J.,
Consult your OB/GYN about testing for diabeties. I know that it is a standard test for all pregnant women, but it never hurts to bring it to the doctors attention. Having episodes of extream hunger or thirst is a warning sign of diabeties. Best of luck!

I actually noticed that high protein foods went right through me while pregnant with my second. I needed "comfort food" and foods that were full of whole grains. I mainly ate homemade granola bars full of flaxseed and wheat germ. I also loved eating cut up strawberries topped with vanilla whole milk yogurt and granola. Lastly, I opted for pears whenever I had some nausea (somehow the grainy texture made me feel more full; must have been psychological). I just say stick with whole grains, and for dinner, have an even mix of protein, veggies, and carbs (eg: a chicken breast, a cup of green beans, and a baked potato). This helped me personally get through the hungry nights! Good luck!
