Hi Moms!

My husband is having some of his buddies over this weekend to play poker. I'm trying to figure out what kind of snacks to have. My husband said to just put out some chips and pretzels, but that sounds boring to me. What do you all think? Are chips & pretzels ok? Or should I make some other kind of small snack?

My hubby said the same thing about snacks for his poker night, but I couldn't do it! We live pretty far away and everyone was coming straight from work so I knew they'd be hungry. I did frozen pizzas, chips and salsa, and chips and dip, plus a bowl of candy and soda/water/beer to drink. Then some of the guys were talking about how they never eat like that blah blah blah but there wasn't a crumb left when they were done! So the next time, I made the pizzas, chips and salsa, and did some veggies and fruit, plus soda/water for beverages. My hubby said that at most poker nights they really do only have pretzels!!

I also had a cream cheese dip. you get 3 blocks of philly cream cheese and put them in a baking dish and cover with pesto sauce (find it by the fresh pasta) and bake for 40 min at 375. It is really good. If you want to have something more like dinner food I would make a chicken taco mix ina crock pot. 3-4 frozen chicken breasts in a crock pot. Add black beans, tomatoes, corn, and taco seasoning. Let cook all day and stir occasionally. It is a great "open and dump" recipe. Serve with cheese and sourcream on tortillas.
Hope this helps!

I would keep it simple and just do the pretzels and chips with dip. If they're a hungry bunch or if the game is going to late into the night then you could maybe do a little platter of small sandwiches too.

I had a tasty dip at Bunco last month- spread cream cheese in the bottom of a small casserole dish, cover with a small jar of pizza sauce, then top with shredded mozzerella cheese, bake at 325 for 25-30 minutes or until cheese is golden brown. Serve with chips- the dip tastes like cheese pizza!! You could add things like sauted mushrooms, Italian sausage, or chopped pepperoni if you wanted a "topping."

Hi, R. -
Went through this same thing with my hubby. If you want to serve something either before or after the game, you can be more elaborate. What my husband explained to me is that during the game, the players don't want anything they have to hold or anything that would get the cards or the chips greasy or messy. Because of that, pretzels, dry roasted peanuts or a dry Chex-type snack mix works best.
Hope they have fun!
K

Hi R.,
As a health educator, I have to recommend with the chips and dip, put out at least one healthy choice. A few cut fresh veggies and some fruit choices with the dip. My favorite is hummus and pita bread, but these are guys!
I am reading the book, "Engine 2 Diet" by the firefighter in Texas that got his entire station eating healthy! Did I say he did this with firefighters in Texas! yes! email me if you want some recipies out of the book, I'll be glad to send them to you!

chips and pretzels are great, and any other finger food, appetizer style, small sandwiches, cheese crackers, bowls of nuts, even a small plate of cut veggies and dip.
