"Odorzout" is another good product to try. The only drawback is that you have to sprinkle it on and then leave it for 24 hours before you can vacuum it up.

Car dealers use an ozonator (sp?) to remove smoke smell from used cars. My friend burned some beans in her house BAD and we loaned her our "Fresh Air" ozone machine and it really helped. You may have to put the couch in a closed off room for awhile and run the machine at full blast to really get it out. Beauty shops use these all the time for all of their odors too. If you need to know how to get one you can email me or there might be a place that rents them near you. ____@____.com
Have it professionally cleaned by a steam clean system (truck mount). We own a carpet cleaning business, and occasionally we come accross this. The people could have been smokers, or the house could of had a minor fire. The smell is down below the surface and there are some professional cleaners we can apply to eliminate it. By the time you purchase all of these chemicals, scrub every inch of your couch, and still have a smoke smell, you could have paid to have it cleaned and remove any germs that you don't know are there from the previous owners. You can check out our website regarding the process a professional will use www.LoveYourCarpets.com.
solumel would probably do the trick...it takes out really tough stains and deodarizes. It's also safe for children and pets.
good luck!
