hi~
I was wondering what the "normal" smell of urine should be. there have been many times when my husband and I feel that our dd MUST have a "poopy" diaper but it is only urine. from what I've noticed I don't think it's gas (e.g. when i smell it i did not feel a release of gas or hear a release of gas). Is that normal?

thanks!!!

What can I do next?

My kids have tricked me more times than I can count - both ways. Wouldn't worry too much. She probably passed gas and you just missed it.

If it is a release of gas, the smell will vanish within a few minutes. Are you nursing? What are you eating? The smell could come out in her urine. Otherwise it is possible her formula is making the smell once she goes potty. Really I think it is gas. Is the diaper change soon after she goes? Could it be the pee and diaper combo? Just grasping. Try changing diapers if you haven't already.

You may want to have her checked for a UTI, she may not have any other symptoms other than smelly urine. My daughter is 7 and is constantly battling UTI's - we are working with a pediatric urologist now to reduce them- and she never complains that it hurts when she potties, never has a fever, never acts puny, etc, just her pee stinks! My daughter had her first UTI when she was about 6 or 7 months old and it wasn't due to anything I did (i.e.- type of diapers, foods I ate, etc) she just has something abnormal with her kidneys.

I had the same question about my daughter. My son is older and we never noticed anything like it with him. However, there was a period of time (not just a few days or weeks) that my daughter's pee really smelled. I even asked the doctor if there was some difference between girls and boys. They said no. I thought my daughter was poopy on many occassions and she was just wet. She is now almost 2 and I haven't noticed it in quite awhile.

My son is 4 and his urine SMELLS!!! normal amt of water or not, there are lots of vitamins and minerals in formula and my mother has said more than once, and I have tested this on me, that your body pees out extra vitamins/minerals that your body does not need causing a foul odor. I tried this out myself by taking a double dose of my usual daily vitamins and with in a day my urine was POTENT ... and think of all the kids foods that have vitamins/minerals plus the daily vitamins we give toddlers etc. I think it could be a mix of gas and too many vitamins/minerals for her body in the formula. No harm no foul aside from the odor.
