Just got a new mattress, memory foam. It is comfortable, but has a smell like rubbing alcohol. Anyone ever dealt with this? Is it dangerous and how do you get rid of it?

What can I do next?

The smell goes away after awhile.
Air it out - a fan might help.

I haven't, but when I was reading reviews on memory foam mattresses, almost every review mentioned the smell when it first arrived. Said you let it decompress and let it air out before using it.

the instructions in ours told us of the smell and suggested we let it air for 48 hours before use.

There is no danger to the smell unless you have allergies.

I don't have a memory foam mattress, but this was a topic of conversation in our community. Many people were complaining about the smell of memory foam mattresses. Some said it went away after a few months, others said it lingered and they had to get rid of the mattress. Several reported headaches and stomach sickness. I wish I had a suggestion for how to get rid of the smell. But I wanted you to know that it's not just you.

We once bought a Tempurpedic and the matching pillows. SO comfortable! Unfortunatly I kept waking up with my eyes swollen and had to get rid of it. We then bought the IKEA memory foam mattress and the same thing happened. I was really disappointed. We are currently saving for a cotton mattress.
If you aren't having a reaction, just irritated by the smell I would do what the others said and put it out to air for a few days.

We always let them set open for a while, preferably outside if its not raining. I think my husband does 2 days before he lets me in the room with it. (I am immensely allergic), but after that, it is good to go and I sleep on them just fine. Good luck!
