Small Babies and Small Toddlers Growing into Average Sized People?

Both of my kids (4 and 15 months) are barely on the growth curve. At 1% for both height and weight. Well my 4 year is starting to grow (10% at 4 year check up. YEAH!). I am fairly petite (5 feet tall and 105 lbs), I believe that God/Mother Nature gave me small babies because otherwise how am I to carry them??? Together they are almost half my weight. They are super healthy and the doc always says they look great, just small. My husband is 5' 10" and 160 so average but he was always a small kid too.

So I know its just genetics, but in a dumb way it does worry me for my son. I don't want him to be too short (My own grandpa was barely 5'2", where my husband's grandparents and father are taller than him.)

Anyways, just curious if anyone had a super small baby, small toddler than grew into at least an average sized person?

What can I do next?

I agree with Emily, don't worry until you have a reason to. Plus you never know!

My 8 1/2 pound, 21 inch baby girl is actually a very petite young woman. While my 8 pound baby boy is HUGE and built like an NFL linebacker.

Yes genetics do play a part, but remember those recessive genes that have been lost in the DNA maybe for a generation or two.

I have a great aunt who was tiny as a baby, toddler, child, teenager. Her adult height was 4 foot 8. I was worried the other way around. My son is always off the charts on the other end and I didn't want a giant! In any case, they are what they are.
I did find the following website interesting though. It gives you an idea of what your child will be. There are a couple of ways to calculate.
Your son is likely to be 5 foot 7.5 inches according to it. I typed in my own parent's heights to check it's accuracy and it had my height of 5 foot 5 1/2 inches- my exact height.

My daughter who is 5' 4 1/2" inches was tiny. She grew after age 10. Her size is just fine.

Yes, small children can turn into average size as adults. Both of my daughters were very small on the charts until age 12. Then they grew to 5'6"" and 5'7".

So you just can't tell and truly it does not matter. They will be the height they are supposed to be. It is interesting to watch to see how genetics plays itself out over the generations, but don't worry about what you can't do anything about.

Try not to worry about what you cannot control. ;)
I kinda have the opposite problem-so I do understand. My DD weighed only 5lbs. 12oz. at birth...but she grew quickly. Always a head taller than her peers. She just turned 6 and wears a size 1 shoe. Her toes are as long as mine. I fear I have spawned a giant. DH is 6'5". : /
My son is kinda a peanut compared to her at his age.
Anyway...I also have a Godson who was a average sized baby but a very small toddler. Always at the bottom of the growth chart. And a daddy only a inch or two taller than his mama. He is 7 now and only recently shot up to match his peers.
So...I think there is always hope.
I come from a family of small men. It'll be ok. :)

Weird things happen......my husband and i are both very average heights with uncommonly tall children.

I know its not what you asked but it just proves that height can come out of nowhere.

Both of my stepsons were always on the small side - maybe not as small as yours, but still always around the 25th percentile for height and 10th for weight when they were toddlers and in grade school. Mom and Dad are not that big either, but both of the those boys are now 17 and 18 and each is at least 6 feet tall, if not taller (and still skinny) - and they aren't done growing yet!

I don't think small baby= small adult all of the time. I was always average for height and 40% for weight until I was 12. Now I am 6ft and 150.
My brother was a preemie who almost didn't make it and he is 6'5"!

I can't answer your question, but I'm like you. I'm small, my husband is average. Both boys (4yr & 8mo) are on the small side - my 4yr old actually fell off the chart at one point & now he's only 30 lb, my 8mo old is about 15.5 lb (around the same size his brother was at that age). So I too am hoping that they grow to atleast average sized! ;)
