SlimFast For Pregnant Mom and Ovaltine for Infant?

I am a little over 3 months pregnant and having a hard time eating. I want to be sure to get my nutrients and the only thing that sounds good to be without making me gag are smoothies, shakes, and fruit. The Slimfast shakes have a bunch of vitamins in them so I was swondering if I could drink one for breakfast while pregnant? I figured it'd be better than nothing at all. The smell of bacon, eggs, and most food(especially fried chicken) makes want to run to the nearest toilet.

My second question pertains to putting a little Ovaltine in my one year old's milk for breakfast. Is it ok?? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

When you click on about her ... here first baby was born May 2006 ... so that makes more sense than having a baby only a 2 months old and already 3 month pg! :-) She's got preggo brain! :-) Simple mistake! lol

If I were you I would opt for fresh homemade shakes made with ingredients such as milk, bananas, and strawberries. The slimfast shakes may have high sodium content but I am no nutritionist so I would ask your doctor. Are you taking your prenatal vitamins? That is key right there, make sure you take the vitamins every day.

I used to use ovaltine in my two-year olds milk. I heard it was much more nutritious than plain old chocolate syrup.

If you like the taste of Slim Fast, try the high protein shakes and just drink them when you want to. Do not try to replace all of your meals this way but if you have 2 shakes in the morning and a snack then lunch that should help and keeps your protein and total calories up.

Ovaltine won't hurt as long as there are no cross allergies and kids like the taste of it. It is more nutritious than chocolate. When you have smoothies, put that in with his milk and mix for a fruit flavor.

I am pretty sure Ovaltine has quite a bit of sugar in it. You might want to check the ingredients. Your profile says you had a baby in late May. I was wondering if this is the baby you are planning to give Ovaltine to? If he is only a month or two old, he really should stick with breastmilk or straight formula, nothing added. I would run this by your pediatrician since he is so young.

I'd say eat what you can keep down. Slimfast may have artificial sweeteners in it, so I wouldn't want to rely on it constantly, but it shouldn't hurt for one meal. (but jut one meal -- your body needs real food to sustain itself and the baby-making process!)
If you're having trouble taking your prenatal vitamins (mine made me hurl) your doctor can prescribe different types of prenatals. Some are easier on your stomach than others.

I don't know about Ovaltine. I never doctored up my kid's milk. Anything you add probably has sugar or high fructose corn syrup, neither of which are good for your baby's body or his teeth and gums.

Try Carnation instead of Ovaltine, less sugar and more nutrients. I wouldn't make it a habit though, otherwise your kiddo will only want things sweetend. (My intercronologist "prescribed" I eat Carnation foods when I was younger b/c I had eating/growth issues).

I drank Boost instead of Slim Fast during my first pregnancy. It also has more nutrients and isn't for weight loss. (You need to drink it with a straw though, cause the smell isn't all that great).

Also, I was sick all 9 months with my first, and my Dr. put me on Zofran (it's generic now, so much more affordable). I was almost hospitalized several times b/c I couldn't keep anything down, not even a sip of water. Maybe you can ask your Dr. about that.

And I love my prenatal vitamin. It's called Tandem, I take it at night and it doesn't make me nauseous. Ask your Dr. about that, it was the only one that worked for me.

To get the protein you need, try avacados, peanut butter, hard cheese... those don't have such strong smells or tastes as the other foods you mentioned and can really help.

Hi Alex,

I was the same way - absolutely nothing sounded good during my prenancy. So, if I could have a somewhat nutritious milkshake, I did. I think you've got to do what you can to get any food down.

And, as far as the Ovaltine, I think it's okay, but not optimal. If he's eating something else, in addition to the drink, that's great. However, it would stink if he got used to having it in his milk and wouldn't drink it plain, so I'd keep it as a treat that doesn't happen all the time.

I was the same way with my son, and for some bizarre reason, eating cottage cheese before meals helped me keep it down most of the time. lol I also have Acid Reflux, which only made the upset stomach worse, and eating the cottage cheese made it tons better! I was able to eat Mexican food, Thai food, and more.

Yes, it was weird having to eat cottage cheese all the time...luckily, I already loved it. lol But maybe it will work for you. :)

Just curious??? How is it possible to have a baby in LATE May and be expecting a child in LATE January? That would make your babies only 8 months apart!! Perhaps you adopted or you meant to say late March???

As for the Slimfast, I think it would be ok for now, but do try to get some protein in your diet when you can. Sometimes these aversions to foods go away and you will desire something different.

I definitely wouldn't give the baby Ovaltine. I wouldn't sweeten their drinks at all. That will lead to bad eating habits and cavities.
