Hi Mama's,

My son has become increasingly fussy before bedtime. My husband and I are trying to get time to fall asleep by himself (he did this in the past just fine but I believe we are teething again). When he is asleep in his crib he sleeps very close to his bumper pad, my guess is for security. Last night he feel asleep with his paci and his favorite blanket, but I took the blanket away from him before putting him in bed. My question is at what age did y'all start letting your little ones sleep with blankets? He rolls over both ways and know to turn his head when he gets to close to something. I'm a first timer so I have no clue what to do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you Mama's for your great advise. I think he is ready to sleep with his beloved airplane blanket. I was just worried and didn't have anything to go off of since he is my first.

I have let my son (8 1/2) mo sleep with a blanket for a while now. He has a little square blankie- velvet on one side and silk on the other. He also is now obsessed with a larger and thicker blanket that is really soft (from pottery barn, which i love!) He does really well with them. He likes it right up on his face and i can't really do anything about it except take them out, but he cries when i take them away.
If you feel comfortable giving him a blanket, i say go for it.

I kept a small stuffed animal in my son's crib but did not let him sleep with a pillow or a blanket until he was over a year old. If you're have trouble getting your son to sleep, I would read Healthy
Sleep Habits, Happy Child. Good luck.

Hi J.,
Neither one of my boys had a favorit blanet so I can't commit on that. I wanted you to know that when they were that age we took the bumper pad out of the crib b/c they turned their faces into it. If you want to keep the bumper pad in you can look for the breathable pads. I thought Babies R US had them, if not, you can search on the web.

Good luck.

My daughter has slept with her Petunia PickleBottom blanket for months...the doctor would probably take her away from me if he know but...It is all about security. The blanket stays in the crib and she has another at the sitter's. She will not sleep without it.

Ditto with the others. My little guy didn't attach himself to his blanket until he was about a year old.. but he always slept with it in his crib.

Hi J.,

Both my kiddos picked their favorite blankies at around 6 months old. From then on, I let them sleep with them....they are a security object for them and make them feel comforted when you're not there.

My daughter sleeps really close to the bumper too, I mean her whole face get all next to it. I have always put a blanket in with her to cover her up I just put the blanket below her arms. She is now going to turn 2 this month but she turns so much that the blanket always comes off of her. It always ends up underneath stomach, her legs or across the crib. If you are too worried just make sure he has enough clothing that he won't be cold without a blanket.

Have you tried a stuffed animal? My son started sleeping with a bear around that age because he wanted something to hold on to and stick under him. At 1 year, we finally had to put a pillow in there, which was like the miracle drug to get him to sleep, and we also cover him up at night (started around a year). I would suggest a stuffed animal before a blanket just because it seems like it may be a bit safer, but you know your child.

I do agree that the bumper should probably come out by now because of that very reason. Also, he's not too far from learning how to use it to crawl on, etc. We got a breathable bumper from toys r us. I think it was only about 15 dollars, and he still has it on his bed to help keep his arms and legs out of the slats.

By that age both of my boys were sleeping with favorite blankets - not for warmth, just for comfort. He's big enough now that it shouldn't be any problems.
