Sleeping Newborns

I just had my baby boy 2 weeks and 4 days ago. He sleeps A LOT and I have been waking him up to feed about every 2-3 hours but should I be waking him up throughout the night or should I let him sleep. I am not sure if he will fuse to let me know he is hungry. I have never let it go that far.

What can I do next?

Wake him during the day to feed, yeah that is fine but I would NOT wake him during the night to feed him...don't worry he will let you know when he is awake and hungry or needing to be changed.

Enjoy the uninterrupted hours of sleep at night for as long as you can!

Number one cardinal rule - NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY! If he's hungry, he'll wake up. If not, count your blessings and enjoy your sleep! He definitely will not starve!

He will most likely wake without you waking him. See how long he goes. I would probably not go past 4 hours during the day but if he's able to go longer though the night...lucky you. Just make sure he's not already pushing 4 hours before you go to bed and then possibly through the night because 12 hours would be tooo long.

I concur with most everyone in that you should wake him during the day, but not at night. It's wonderful that he doesn't have his days and nights mixed up! When he's really hungry, he will wake up and fuss. They always do! Congratulations!!!

My son slept ALOT. I never woke him up to eat. Ever. Let sleeping babies lie...
He's 9 months old now, and 21 lbs and a great sleeper at night and naps, and very lively the rest of the day!
It's amazing how fast the time has gone!!

Our first son was born early and had jaundice. He was in the hospital for 10 days, and a few days after bringing him home his bilirubin levels went up again and the doctor had us use a blanket to get his levels back down. We were told to wake him every 3 hours to eat, because eating (and pooping out the bilirubin ) is important in getting rid of jaundice.

I'm pretty sure that unless your doctor has a specific concern, you do not need to wake baby. It's not a bad idea to mention this at your next appointment, but you're probably fine.

In general, the saying "never wake a sleeping baby" is true, but it never hurts to ask the doctor. Just to be safe :-)

Infants should nurse 8-12 times in 24 hours for the first month or so ... by one to two months old 7-9 times in 24 hours. During the first month to month and a half, I woke baby to nurse so that she would continue to thrive and so that I would establish a good supply early on.

Good luck! And congratulations.

You don't need to wake him to feed him - he'll let you know - he'll wake up when he's hungry. If you can get the book "what to expect- the first year", it will help you a lot and answer a lot of your questions. You might be able to find it at the library as well. Babies will let you know what they need by fussing. It's ok to let them fuss a little - it's how they communicate. Relax :)

I was told by my doctor to stop waking them for feedings when they are 4 weeks old unless they go more then 7 hours at night, after 2 months old you can stop waking them altogether if they are gaining weight properly.

I have heard various things on this. When my son was that I had to wake him at night to feed him, because he had trouble putting on weight at first, and had jaundice. My husband's sister had to wake her baby up to feed him at night, I think because of jaundice, but once he hit 10 pounds her doctor told her she didn't need to anymore. Honestly, I would ask your pediatrician the next time you see them. If they tell you there is a good reason to wake them up, then you should, but if everything is going well for your little guy, then let him sleep.

my pediatrician said that if a newborn sleeps most of the time it is normal. Feed him every 2-3 hrs during the day but let him sleep at night. Believe me, he will wake you when he gets hungry.

As long as he is gaining weight and taking in the recommended amount (2.5oz per pound of body weight in 24 hours is a good estimate, but talk to your doctor to get his/her opinion), then I would not wake the baby. Feedings are important but so is sleep. Let him decide what he needs more at that moment, he knows how to ask for food when he is ready.

A.:

Our rule was NEVER wake a sleeping baby...sorry. we did NOT wake our sleeping babies. They will wake when they are hungry. If he's sleeping at night then sleep yourself.

You can establish a routine. But keep in mind that the routine and schedule will change when he gets older...six months is a big growth spurt and changes.

For the first couple of weeks - babies sleep about 22 hours of the day - all of mine did this...

It's OKAY to let him fuss for a minute - he might learn to self-sooth. We never ran right in when they fussed. We finished wiping our hands or what ever and then went in.

Unless he is not continuing to gain let sleeping babes lie up to 7 hours if you can have a baby trined to sleep 6 plus hours at night at 5 weeks you can call yourself lucky. If he fails to continue to gain then you have to back up the hours and wake him at about 4 hours. Congrats on your blessing.

My baby was the same exact way - he slept ALL the time when he was first born even through the night without waking up. I was told by my pediatrician to wake him up during the night if he hadn't eaten in 4hours I think. So, there I was setting the alarm to wake HIM up every 3-4 hours so that he could eat. Sometimes I even had to undress him to wake him up! Eventually though at around 3 weeks he started waking up on his own during the night to feed - so enjoy it while you can!!!
