Sleeping Later

My twin girls, who are 8 months, go to bed around 7:30-8pm and they are bright eyed at 5:30am or so. I would love to sleep until 6:30-7, but I don't see this happening. When does sleeping in later begin???

What can I do next?

Feel blessed. My 11 1/2 month old is down about 10pm, is up at 4 to eat for 15 mins and then down again until 6:30am. He takes 2 naps a day also, but it makes it hard for me to get good sleep, and I'm 4 1/2 months prego too.

They'll adjust in time, but every baby has a different schedule. Good luck.

Hi S.,

I have twin boys and they wake up at 5:30 am - always have. It doesn't matter if I put them to bed later, they just wake up at 5:30 crabby and tired. So as much as I love to sleep in I wait till hubby is home on the weekends to do it! I hear you though... I sure do miss my days of sleeping till whenever! Good luck and if you find a miracle sleep aid - pass it on!!

I think age 12, is truly when sleeping late begins:)I feel your pain also. My almost 9 mo. old is also now getting up at 5:30, she used to sleep until 7-7:30 a.m. I figure I need to go to bed earlier to accomodate some of this, also the suggestion to put her back in bed is probably a good idea.

Have you thought about keeping them up later? Try messing with them to keep them up an hour later. Also are they napping? A nap and going to bed early may be the issue.

i feel your pain. my 10mo wakes up between 5-5:30! i've tried keeping her up, moving naps around and eliminating naps, but thats just what time she gets up. i found that all that tweeking of her natural schedule just seemed to deprive her of sleep, therefore making nighttime sleeping worse and wake up time the same, causing a bad cycle. i hope you figure this out! i know its hard!!

Try reading "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" for some professional advice on sleep habits of infants and children. This book has helped me a lot in getting through the various sleep stages of my daughter. Also, I think some kids are just 'programmed' to get up at a certain time and there's not a whole lot you can do. My daughter goes to be around 7:30pm at age 2 and usually gets up between 7-7:30am. I have tried putting her to bed earlier AND keeping her up later, and it doesn't make a difference; she usually gets up around the same time. The only real difference is that she's crankier in the morning if I keep her up too late.
My nephew, who will be 3 in February, ALWAYS gets up at 5:30am, even if he's been up until 9pm. My sister has tried EVERYTHING to keep him asleep longer, but he's been a 5:30am guy since about birth.
Now, every kid is different, and every family has a different schedule, but trying to get kids to sleep later just doesn't work for my family. However, your daughters are only 8 months old, so this could be a phase that you just have to suffer through. Have you tried going in their room(s) in the morning, giving them some books/toys and then YOU try to go back to bed? My daughter got up too early this morning, so I am feeling your pain today!
GOOD LUCK!!!

Every child is different so there is not set time for sleeping later to begin. My suggestion is try to keep them up a little later every night to delay their sleep cycle. Try keeping them up an extra 15 minutes for a few nights in a row, when they get used to that add another 15 minutes until they sleep in per your preferred schedule. If they take afternoon naps try putting them down a little later for those, too. You'll probably get some fussing the first few times you try this but with dilligence you can adjust their sleep cycles.
