Sleeping Issues - Islamorada,FL

My 2-year-old daughter seems to have something against sleep, for both naps and at night. She's never been one to go through an entire night without waking, but in the last couple months it has gotten a lot worse. She's been in a toddler bed since she was about 18 months. We did that early because she has a little brother, who is now 5 months. They share a room. At this point I've pretty much given up on naps, she even refuses to have quiet time in her bed. We have a routine for bedtime, but as soon as I get up to leave the room she cries loudly. She has also started getting out of her bed as I try to leave the room. Once she is finally down, the next problem is when she wakes in the middle of the night. It's quite a process to get her back to sleep. Sometimes I end up sleeping on the floor in their room. This was the case last night, but even with my being in there, we were up for almost 3 hours! I've had a discussion with her about dreams, in case that's the problem. She did start potty training this week, but this has been a problem since before that started. My son sleeps much better than she does! He gets up once if at all during the night! So we definitely lucked out there. Help! I'm tired!!

What can I do next?

At 2 1/2 years old, our son was still not sleeping through the night, we switched out his toddler bed for a full sized bed - huge bed for a small boy yes, but we already had the mattress and box spring. Funny thing happened, he slept through the night! Of course, I was still up in the middle of the night going pee because I was pregnant, so when I went to check on him he was always in a different spot on the bed - I guess he just needed room to move!
On the going to sleep alone issue, what I did was a version on was is outlined in "Happiest Toddler on the Block." Sitting on the floor by the bed I would rub his back for about ten minutes, then say "I'm going to go switch the laundry. I'll be back in two minutes." Then I would come back in two minutes (this is important so that (s)he will trust your word each and every night). I would sit and rub his back for another five minutes and say "I have to go start the dishwasher, I'll be back in five minutes." Then I would come back in five minutes! Sit and rub back for two minutes then take a ten minute "break," you get the cycle. He would always fall asleep waiting for me. He wouldn't get out of bed because he KNEW I was coming back. He is now six years old and at night I rub his back for five minutes, then leave and do a five minute "check" and then go fall asleep sitting up next to my two year old! haha Someday my nights will be mine again, and so will yours :)

Food- what is she eating- sugar will keep kids, and adults awake. WestonPrice.com is my favorite resource.

We are going through the same thing. My daughter is 3 and she was never a good sleeper except for naps. We were up at 3:30 this morning and I finally got her to calm down and go back to her bed about 5am. She gets things set in her mind that she wants to do. We try to explain to her that it's 3:30 am and everyone is still sleeping. She just doesn't understand that. I really don't have an answer for you but just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I will check back to see what answers you get and hopefully it can help us out too. Good Luck!

Night Terrors. nightmares, realizing what may be lurking in the dark, knowing Mommy isn't close by... all those things are major to older infants and toddlers, even grade-schoolers.
