My 1 year old has been waking 2 or 3 times each night and requires up to an hour sometimes to get back to sleep. I know he is teething but it seems that it is going on for weeks. I am not opposed to CIO and have done this in past months with some success but after he got a cold he resumed his old sleeping patterns. He shares a room with his 3 year old brother and therefore i need to put him in our bed if we CIO so that he does not wake with all the screaming. I am exhausted. help. thx!

What can I do next?

If he's teething then give him some Tylenol or something before bed to help with the pain. If you don't like Tylenol try some Baby Orajel or something which has a more immediate effect (or use both one for the immediate response and the other for overnight help).
That said don't use CIO if you know for sure he's in pain. Ignoring him while he is obviously in pain is probably not the best idea. He needs to know you understand and you're there for him. I realize you are tired but I think fixing the pain will solve the sleep issues, assuming that's truly what it is.
Good luck!

I wouldn't do cio if he's teething. I hear it can take a month for some teeth to come in so it may be over soon. Is it his back molars? Those are very painful. I would give him Ibprophen before bed. Otherwise I would wait it out. It will pass.

Hey C.,
I agree with what's been said, but only want to add that if you do decide, once the teething is done, to CIO, I don't think having him in your bed will help. It will only get him used to that and then there will be one more issue for him to cry about!
Good luck!

Dear C., Children go through these times for many reasons as they grow. As the mom of 5, I found myself just responding to their needs as they arose. Could he be cutting some 1 year molars? Does he have a stuffy nose etc.?? I did not have them cry it out... at least find out what the trouble is. Each parent does as they see fit but my feeling is the child needs you for something... I know you need sleep too, so if putting him in your bed works, do it, it worked for me. They all grew up fine and well adjusted. Love your babies:-) Grandma Mary
