Sleep/gas Issues with My 4 Month Old!!

My 4 month old son recently began sleeping much better at night(he used to be up 4-5 times), but is still waking up at 4:30am with what I think is painful gas. He gets a bottle or nurses at 1:30am (the first time he's up since his 7:30pm bottle), and then is fussing half-asleep a couple hours later. I am not sure what I can do to help, I end up having to go in and get him since laying upright on my chest seems to help him pass it easier. Any advice on how to relieve that??

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
I always used to "bicycle" my son's legs when he seemed gassy and it seemed to help. Worth a try! Good luck!
p.s. He's really a good sleeper for 4 mos old! :)

M.,
Wow are you lucky as far as sleep patterns! When my son was 4 months old he still had colic and it was NO sleep in our house until he was 6 months old. For gas, we used Mylicon and made sure he was burped very well. |My husband had the secret touch and would lay him on his belly across my husbands legs and that felt good to my son. We did the 'bicycle' with his legs and rubbed his tummy and lower back in circular motions. Oh and my son too had major issues and I had him on the Nutramigen formula. When I switched him to Nestle Good Start he was a totally dif baby! He had less gas issues and slept so much better, also try putting him on his tummy to sleep.
Good luck,
Christina

Try giving him Mylicon just before or just after the feeding to alleviate the gas pain before it starts. Other than that the other Mom's have hit on all my suggestions.

When my baby was young the Dr. recommended Milicon drops. They work wonders. They aren't very expensive and you can even get them at Dollar General. Plus once you buy one bottle there is usually a coupon inside the box for $2 the next bottle. They worked really well for his tummy aches. He would pull his legs up to his belly and I knew it was gas pain. Then he grew out of that problem until last month when I fed him brocolli for the first time. I pulled out the drops and he was fine.

You can buy a "snuggle nest" that fits inside
the crib that elevates the baby's upper body about 2 inches to keep the digestive process moving.
Make sure you get a good burp from him after each feeding.
Also, try a little tummy time shortly after he eats.
The pressure on his stomach will also help relieve gas.
Good Luck!

It may be what is in his bottle. If you're using formula it may be something in that that suddenly he's not digesting well. Try switching formula. Just watch out for lactose and soy ones. I remember my son started having problems, and after I got him on Goodstart he was much better. That was quite a while (years ago) now, but it was an issue. I don't know what all is out there now, but it is something to look into. Gas drops should help too.

Bottom line, just switch formulas to one that breaks down easier. If it's your milk, maybe you need to change your diet. Hope this helps!!

How long do you spend burping him after his feeding? Maybe a good long period of burbing may eliminate the waking?

Maybe try rubbing his around his belly button in a clockwise motion...I did read that somewhere and I cannot remember where! Are you giving him those Mylicon drops?? That seems to help my daughter! Good Luck!
