My youngest, 4, has severe allergies to all dairy, peanut and soy. he is barely 30 pounds and i am desperately trying to find a way to put some "meat on his bones" his nails are weak and he has tummy aches frequently. what i was needing some help with, if any of you are nutritionists or know a good one that can do a one time consult, i am looking for dietary protein supplement shake-type drinks. he can't have anything with dairy or soy, so that limits me a great deal. he craves meats, so i KNOW he needs proteins. anybody know anyone or can pass me a name of a company that puts out these type of supplements ? he really needs some weight and i am at wit's end trying to find it by myself. thanks so much!

Hi J.,

Have you tried taking him to a chiropractor? I am a chiropractor and I do extensive work with nutrition, homeopathics and allergies. I use Applied kinesiology (aka muscle testing) to determine what conditions exist and what organs are involved. For example, when the digestive tract and liver are weak or not functioning properly it will cause the body to be more susceptible to allergens. Then I prescribe the correct nutrition and I use a a cold laser to help eliminate allergies and to heal the underlying conditions. If you are interested in more information or you would like to schedule an appointment please give me a call at ###-###-#### or visit my website at www.sullivanchiropractic.com. Thank you!

Hi J., I have a fabulous pediatrician that can probably lead you to a good nutritionist. He is very thorough with all of his patients and really goes the extra mile. (From what I have seen so far!) I'm new to Frisco via Cali and am thankful I found him so quickly with a newborn and a 3 year old to keep healthy.

J., about the wheat/gluten problem, it might NOT show on regular allergy tests. for years I've been having issues with gluten and after I was put on extra vitamin D it has gotten better. so also have his vitamin D levels checked next time they do a blood test on him...he could be a bit deficient too. I'm not saying it would be it, but it's really worth checking it out. if you have any more questions about gluten-free, send me an e-mail. ~C.~

Hello J.,

I hope he's not allergic to anything else.

when increasing his protein intake make sure it's balanced. you donot want to overload his kidneys with too much protein and not enough carbs and good fats. also, make sure he gets enough calcium, magnesium and vitamin D.

here are some ideas: in an asian supermarket (south east corner of frankfort and Josey Ln, and one near josey ln and 190 (super H) you can find 'mung beans' looks like split pea but yellow those have lots of protein and fiber.

what type of "milk" do you give him? there is oat milk and rice milk enriched with vitamins and calcium.

if he likes meat, make him meatloaf or beef patties, give him turkey, try and stay away from processed meats, you never really know all that's in it. they add "whey" to so many things that's not even funny! cook beans. look at "mexican / latin /asian" foods for ideas and skip the milk and soy.

get him chewable enzyme tablets to help him digest his food better. and as you probably know, ALWAYS read the labels because manufacturers change the ingredients from time to time.

I don't know what you do for birthday parties but here is a place where I get my favorite cakes to make: www.reallygreatfoods.com they sell a lot of soy free / wheat free / dairy free products. Heve you been to sprouts or whole foods? they carry a lot of dairy free and soy free products too. for a while my godson was allergic to soy and milk and that's where we get the birthday cakes!

does he like corn bread? make your own and add extra rice protein or soy protein. you can make your own almond milk (the soy milk maker also works with almonds) and I found that using almond milk to make oatmeal or malt-o-meal, puddins, etc comes closest to using cow milk.

you need to make a plan. most of the protein stuff out there has soy and/or milk.

can your son have peanuts? if so, natural peanut butter is a great source of protein.

with those allergies, you'd have to stick with mostly home made.

can he have eggs? like they say "eggs are the perfect food" (as long as you're not allergic to eggs, of course!)

here is something I found--keep in mind that info is geared towards a low-carb diet and not a kids diet. use this as a guideline to help you add more protein in his diet:

http://www.the-low-carb-way.com/high-protein-foods.php

High Protein Foods: Meat
Any meat will be a high protein and low carb food. In addition to the common chicken, beef, turkey, and ham, you might want to try some duck, goose, venison, and lamb for variety.

High Protein Food: Fish
Fish is an often overlooked source of protein. The main benefit of coldwater fish, other than protein, is that they are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. One danger, however, is that fish can contain unhealthy levels of heavy metals such as mercury. In addition to fleshy fish, such as salmon, cod, and trout, you might want to try some shellfish such as lobster, crab, oysters, and shrimp. In fact, these are some of the most delectible critters on the planet.

High Protein Foods: Nuts
Nuts are a good source of protein. Walnuts are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Peanuts (not really a nut but a legume --beans--) are a good source of protein and carbohydrates.

High Protein Food: Beans
Beans are a decent source of protein, and an especially important source for vegetarians. Most beans contain an appreciable amount of carbohydrates, and should be used in moderation on a low carb diet. You also want to make sure you cook beans thoroughly, as our digestive tracks are not adapted to breaking down some of the beans' proteins. Cooking provides necessary pre-digestion.

High Protein Food: Eggs
Eggs are the perfect high protein food! Cholesterol, you say? Baughhh! Dietary cholesterol has almost no effect on blood cholesterol. Eggs are a great source of protein, and even some omega-3 fatty acids. To maximize the omega-3 content, it is good to get eggs from range-fed birds.

good luck and keep trying! ~C.~

I have a fabulous chiropractor who is a clinical nutritionist that is awesome with kids. He is top of the list when it comes to using nutrition & pure nutritional supplements (not the kind you buy off the shelf - other than a few that are available places like Whole Foods or Central MArket) to help the body heal itself, etc. I know he could make some changes to improve your son's general health & quality of life.

His name is K. Andrew Shepherd ###-###-####.

Hello! I have one of those skinny kids with allergies. She is now 16 and doing very well. She has the same allergies your kiddo does plus many others. I have found a number of things that work well. Almond and cashew butters are a great substitute for peanut butter. Dr. Praegger's makes some great veggie patties that are soy, corn, and wheat free. My DD eats only rice breads and cereals. She eats lots of chicken and lean meat as well. Potatoes and beans are also a great filler-upper. Sprouts in Frisco and Whole Foods in Plano are going to be great resources for you for these specialty food items. At both locations you can find very knowledgeable folks to direct you to good books and food items that will be helpful. Friso Online has a number of families that have allergies, I think there is an area support group as well. Good luck and feel free to email me if you would like to at ____@____.com

I agree it sounds like your child is allergic to gluten. We are a family full if gluten intolerants. I have a 3 yr old and a 7 yr old. The 3 yr old is a HUGE challenge to get to eat. When we made the changes he didn't eat for 3 days but finally got hungry enough and is eating now. We eat lots of fruit and veggies. Hummus, nut butters and protein. We were diagnosed through kiniesiology at my chiropractors office. www. drlauraprecourt.com

It is a huge challenge in today's world to raise gluten free, dairy free, soy free, corn free (and the list goes on) children but MANY are doing it!! Good luck

My son and I are allergic to those things, too. However I can have goat's milk products, but they are so expensive that I can't afford much. I get beans. We eat bean and corn chip snacks, no cheese, just a little garlic. Beans and whole rice make a good complete protein. Actually beans and any whole grain will work.

We get other nuts and seeds like macadamia, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds. I make a trail mix with safe nuts and sugar free dried fruit from Central Market.

I make banana-sun butter popsicles. 3 bananas, 6 Tablespoons sun butter, and honey to taste; blend, then freeze in popsicle molds (I've got tupperware ones; I don't like the ones with straws built in for many reasons). Sometimes I even add carob powder for a "chocolate" taste. We can't have chocolate or I'd just use that.

After that, we have protein at every meal.

Good luck!

Hi J....I'm sure you're going crazy trying to figure this "thing" out for your son!! I'm a chiropractor in Frisco, and I'll give you some knowledge for you to make an educated decision...or add to what you already have in mind.

The human body truly is amazing! The master system in our bodies is the Nervous System, which consists of the brain and spinal cord. The Nervous System controls every organ, tissue, and cell in the body! Our bodies are self-healing and self-regulating. If we get a cut...what heals the cut? A band-aid...No. Neosporin...No. We do! We also automatically regulate body temperature, heart beat,breathing...etc. Our bodies...KNOW what to do! However, sometimes there can be a "glitch in the system." This is also known as interference in the Nervous System. THe spine protects the spinal cord, and when there is a misalignment, it causes interference in the Nervous System because the nerves are not allowed to function at 100% ~ therefore, symptoms occur as the body's response to let us know it needs some assistance.

Chiropractic assists the body in the self-healing process by removing the misalignment...allowing the messages from the brain to travel down the spinal cord and out the nerves to a specific part of the body...so we function at 100%.

I would love to have you bring your son in for a free consultation...and everyone from this website automatically receives 50% off the exam!! We can evaluate your son to see if Chiropractic might help him...address the necessary nutritional needs...and there are options for specific allergy testing/treatment in the office (I'd refer you guys to another Dr. in the office.) Or you can contact her directly. Dr. Naureen Hassam. The technology is state of the art designed to rid the body of the allergy completely... Nothing invasive...completely safe and not scary for a child!

I hope this information helps...I know it's a lot but we can never be too educated!! Best of luck to you and your son!!

J., you can do an IgE test to show to which foods he is allergic, and and IgG to show to which foods he is sensitive. IgE can be done by Quest or LabCorp, the least expensive IgG is by Alletess. Both are blood tests. Dr. Rapp has a book called Is This Your Child? and Dr.Kenneth Bock has a book called Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, Asthma, ADHD and Allergies. I work with many children who have these same symptoms. I know the best nutritionist in the business. She will do phone consultations for you---which is really fine. If you will follow her advice, your child will improve dramatically in many areas of his life. I've seen it with my own children and also with the children in my private practice.

Sometimes the diet she recommends can seem strict---JUST DO IT. I put it off for several years, and once we got desperate enough to do it, we saw immediate improvement and relief. I felt awful about letting my resistance keep my son suffering for longer.

I know you said all dairy, does that also include goat milk?? My nephew was allergic to cow milk and soy but not goat milk. If you are not sure try it. If he is not, that would be the best way of putting the weight on him. My little girl is 4 and barely weighs 30 pounds as well, but she is extremly active.

I just took an amazing Nutrition course and our instructor happens to have her own practice. She was amazing as an instructor I'm sure she's even more amazing as a nutritionist...I remember her saying she has an office in the Las Colinas-Irving area but don't know the exact address...I'm sure you can look her up.
Her name is Kathryn Fink Martinez. If no luck and interested...reply back to me...I'm taking a Journalism course this time:)and I'm sure I can find her on campus and get some info for you...
FYI We touched alot on eating disorders and vegetarian/special diet needs...so I hope you may find her useful:)

Oh but RICE is a great alternative!!! You can find alot of rice products for your situation...For instance, Rice Milk and Rice noodles (so you can make a nice Spaghetti w/ Meatballs:)...Locations for such products where you can do your shopping all in one place is; Sprouts and obviously Whole Foods. And not to worry, he will get meat on those lil bones of his and hopefully, more than likely, grow out of his allergies...sometimes they are just childhood cases:)
Take care and good luck!:)

If you are keeping him away from dairy, peanut and soy and he is still having tummy aches and not gaining weight you should take the wheat and gluten out of his diet for at least 3 months to see what changes.
Wheat and Gluten intolerance cause malnutrition and no matter how much or what supplements you give they are not absorbed into the body properly.
You have to give it enough time to start the healing process before you see results.

Hope this helps.

Hi J.,

I feel for you, my son is also allergic to all dairy, peanuts and all nuts, and soy (which is in 99% of all processed foods), in addition he is also allergic to eggs, seafood, and fish. We kind of eat like vegan with meat (chicken, turkey, beef, pork, and buffalo) and no soy. I find a lot of alternative recipes online searching as vegan. You can make homemade yummy vegan cookies, cakes, breads. My little guy loves homemade banana bread & pumpkin bread. I often give him salami and avocados at lunch that are both high it fat. We drink calcium fortified rice milk (Rice Dream) and and OJ. Your best bet for soy free packaged products are in the organic section of the grocery store. We usually shop at Krogers and he loves these round Fourth of July crackers, Annie's Bunny Grahams, Fig Newmans, Cascadian Farm Granola. I've recently discovered he can now have "ice cream" with Fruit Sobet found near the ice cream made by Haagan-Dazs!!!! He loves hummus or guacamole and crackers. Beans and rice. Sunflower & pumpkin seeds. Lots of fresh organic fruits and berries. I also recommend a good probiotic, Bluebonnet brand at Whole Foods is milk and soy free. Get a good multi-vitamin, Yummi Bears I got a Market Street is milk and soy free. We also eat a lot of noodles with olive oil and herbs or red pasta sauce. He loves to dip everything in Ketchup. Use coconut oil, it's high fat and good for you too. Soy free breads can be hard to find, Kroger sells this very yummy bread called Harvest Bread, they have a fruit bread that is very good and wheat. In the bakery section you can find soy free sourdough. Some pita breads are soy/milk free. Corn tortillas are soy free. I've only been able to find soy free flour tortillas at Whole Food. In the frozen organic section you can find soy/milk free bread too. Offer well-balanced nutritious foods often and add as much fat as possible with high fat meats, good olive and coconut oils. Do a search online for all the different vitamins and minerals and amounts that your child needs and the foods that contain them to make sure he is getting everything he needs. Best of Luck!!!
