3 out of 5 of my children have dry skin. Especially this time of year. Aquaphor by Eucerin is awesome. My kids like the smell of Jergins. In a little bowl, I will mix the Jergins with Olive oil. That seems to work well, also. My dermatalogist has recommended only lukewarm, quick showers. The hot water dries the skin.
Good luck.

My guess is it's either allergy to the detergent you are using to wash her clothes or allergy to the soap you are bathing her with. Look at the ingredients. The best detergent I have found for being hypo allergenic is ALL. That was DR recommended to me. YOu would need to rewash all that touches her skin. Also look at the ingredients of any lotion you are putting on her. Try using only water and some baby oil to clean her with. V.

Very common, especially with the cold weather. My son has very sensitive skin. A and D ointment is a lifesaver on his skin, I rub it on the bumps and they disappear! I also use Boudreaux's Baby Butt Smooth; Aquafor and Eucerin would be the others I'd recommend. A and D first though!

Eucerin and Aquaphor are awesome. Also Renew lotion from Melaleuca.com is great, that is what I use because it is less greasy than Eucerin or Aquaphor.

I use Arbonne ABC Baby Wash and Burt's Bees Baby Wash. Both have no chemicals that would dry out the skin. I use Arbonne's Body Wash myself because regular soap can dry my skin. So when my 15 month old starting getting dry skin I took her off the Johnson and Johnson and put her on Burts Bees or Arbonne. Whichever I have around. You have to order Arbonne through a consultant. They have wonderful baby lotion that I like to use on my hands too.

My baby had this too. At first we had a $50 bottle of script lotion...then it got worse. I got this norwegien neutrogena lotion from walmart and it finally all cleared up and her skin is so soft now, it was scabbing and bleeding from scratching! I still use it. good luck

We had good luck with Eucerin and Aquaphor. Just make sure whatever you try is fragrance free.

One more thing:
My pediatrician says that the school of thought has changed about baths. Baths are now believed to be helpful because the skin gets the water on it and as soon as bath is over you lube up your little one with lotion to trap the moisture in the skin. Just make sure the bath isn't hot and your using a fragrance free hypoallergenic wash.

We had great success with Aveeno Baby Cream. I also periodically have this problem, and have used Palmer Cocoa Butter (you can get it unscented) and that has helped me tremendously. If you want to try a more natural route, I recommend use safflower oil. This oil is small enough to be absorbed easily, has the nutrients skin needs, and won't make you smell like a salad. I use this for day to day dryness, but when my skin gets REALLY bad this doesn't halp very much and I have to use the cream/butter.

Hi T., I would use a really top notch lotion (we like Eucerin or "Disney's" Ecexma cream for babies) two times a day, both in the morning and at night after the bath. That should help, but if not, I would consult your ped. Best of luck! F.

We use Aquaphor for babies. It has worked really well on my daughter's cheeks which can get dry and red from the cold air.

Hi T.,

Has her diet changed recently? Usually all skin conditions are systemic and can be adjusted with diet or environment. If it has changed, you've found your culprit. If it hasn't you can research your environment. My website www.go2harmony.healthyhometour.com can show you where toxins are in your home and how to avoid them.

I know a wonderful lotion that will help eczema, psoriasis, rosacia and many other horrible skin conditions better than Eucerin or anything a dermatologist can prescribe and it's safe for babies and their little faces. The research is documented to be 90-97% more effective in a recent double-blind study. If you're interested let me know.

Regards,

M.

My DD has struggled with dry skin too. We love Aveeno or Cetaphil here. Eurcerin is ok too. Everyone seems to have a personal preference. I use the grown up versions since these are fragrance free and good for sensative skin.

Lotion up often, especially after baths. If you are doing baths everyday you can cut down. They can be drying. We do every other day or so depending on how hard she plays.

We battle this problem with my 7 year old every winter. We've tried various lotions, prescription creams that the pediatrician and the dermatologist recommended. Through trial and error we've found that Creamy Vaseline works best. And it's the cheapest! It's not the regular Vaseline product, it comes in a tube like hand lotion. We found that if we use this every day it prevents his skin from getting in bad shape. Some of the other products out there have fragrance that can be very irritating when their skin gets this way. Good luck!

Tracy,
Have you tried Aquaphor(I think that's how it's spelled)?
If you shop at CVS, their storebrand of Aquaphor is just as good and less expensive. You didn't specify what areas of the body where the problem skin is located, but just to let you know our Peds Dr. told us about Aquaphor when our little boy's face was chapped by baby wash(he was only 2 weeks old).
I hope this works out for you.

Have you tried Eucerin lotion? I usually get the generic brand -- check your drugstore. That's what our children's pediatrician recommended. Also if you have some Lanserin (spelling is wrong, I know) that is for new breastfeeding moms to put on sore nipples, that is also a good relief for dry cracked skin.

One of my sons has had this problem almost from birth every winter. We finally got it under control by slathering his face with a petroleum jelly product (like Aquaphor) every time he goes outside, shortening his bath time, and putting on a thick lotion (Cetaphil) after every bath.

get a humidifier! with how cold its been and the heat running its drying me out so i know it dries my kids out! i have humidifiers in the bedrooms and for downstairs i just keep a pot of water simmering on the stove with cloves or citrus peels or cinnamon in it. and lotions are drying on already compromised skin because of the alcohol. give your baby a massage with some good ole olive oil or even coconut oil. good luck

My son's skin started drying out at about 10 mths as well. A few months later he was diagnosed with excema (essentially that means he has very dry skin). We have tried every kind of lotion out there. What works best for us is Dermarest excema lotion (sold at CVS). We like this because it is the only lotion we have found that is not greasy yet still moisturizes. Eucerin and Aquaphor are good, but my son didn't like them because they felt greasy and heavy to him. He would constantly ask us to get it off. Walmart sells a house brand of Eucerin (Equate-dry skin creme) that is just a good as Eucerin for a fraction of the cost.

T.,
I highly recommend Aquaphor which is made by Eucerin. I read about it online when my daughter was a few months old and had red, dry cheeks. It is a little expensive ($5-$6 for a tube) but you only apply a little and honestly, you will see results in just hours. Not trying to sound like an info-mercial, but I have been so impressed with it's effectiveness. They sell it at Walmart and most other stores like Walgreens, CVS, etc.

Have you taken her to a dermatologist? There are some good creams out there but I will say take her to the doctor and then buy the one he/she suggest. Is the baby taken a lot of water/liquids?

My daughter has similar skin problems. We use the Arbonne baby line and love it. There is a wash, baby oil and lotion, as well as a diaper rash cream. Arbonne products are natural and hypo-allergenic. I have a website if you would like to check it out or just e-mail me. www.helenbrown.myarbonne.com

Hi T.,

Stay away from the 'mainstream' chemical laden lotions and ointments, etc.! And please do not use cortisone (steriod) creams; this does not cure anything, it only pushes the rash deeper into the body. Ideally you will want to push it out. Aquaphor an other petroleum based ointments are toxic an dangerous.
Try something simple like some organic olive or sesame oil and see if this helps. Also, no bathing with soap. Bathe her only once a week or so in warm water and maybe a bit of sea salt or even raw honey is a wonderful additive to the bath for cleansing and moisturizing. I have a daughter with chronic skin issues (she's 5 now) and we are now working with a homeopath, but try these suggestions first. Also be aware that most eczema type issues are food allergy related (cow's milk, wheat gluten, etc) and take a look at your household products like laundry detergent, soaps that you use on her and any other products that come in contact with her skin.
Also, most folks don't realize that anyting you put ON the skin is being absorbed directly into the blood stream, so be very careful about what you are using! I like Dr. Bronner's soaps (real soap, not a detergent, and organic as well) you can find them at Publix, and at Health Food Stores and they are wonderful. You can use the bar soap, or opt for the liquid castile (vegetable based) soap for bathing and also for doing the laundry! It works GREAT. Check out www.drbronner.com to learn more.
Also, I make several all natural and organic oils and salves for different skin issues if you need more advice.

I found this on my 2 year old but possibly not quite as bad. Anyway we use a natural cramy baby oil that is not greasy and soaks right in. It doesn't feel nasty on my children like some products do and I know there are no chemicals in it to hurt my child long term. When mine were little I used it after baths but stopped as they got older. I pulled it back out and started using is yesterday. It has always worked very well for us. I also sell this product and I don't want to hide that but I have used it ever since it came out years ago on about the last 7 of my 11 children and I just love it. It is a Shaklee Product. Also you might want to consider what your child might need nutritionally. I had slacked of my childs multi due to finances and so have started giving him is two a day(with so many kids it can be hard for us to give them everything we would like). I think it is best to approach from the inside and the outside instead of just treating the symptons treat the cause and in the dry months our skin needs more and now C for healing may be an issue too. If you are breast feeding you can up your supplement intake if not I use a powder supplement that can be added to whatever you are giving your baby. Hope some of that will help. Let me know if you have any questions about it sometimes I am not so good with my words...like when I first get up in the AM.

Sinserely,
K. B
