Hey ladies! I need some advice. My daughter, who turns 1 in 10 days, REFUSES to drink out of a sippy cup! I've been trying for 4 months now, and the only one she seems interested in is the little cup with the pop=out straw. She just takes the others, bangs them around, she'll even go so far as to put them in her mouth- but she absolutely refuses to tilt her head to drink! she won't do a big-girl cup (with no lid), and I've tried showing her with the sippy cup how "big girls" drink, to no avail. When she was 4 months old, I got her one of those Podee systems for her bottle, and since then she won't even let me hold her on her back to feed her- she wants to sit upright to drink. Could I have ruined her to drinking any other way than with a straw? HELP!!!

What can I do next?

When i was putting my kids on sippy's I took away all their straw cups and bottles and left them no alternative but the sippy. It was two days of hell but after that we had no more crying or even asking for the others. They happily used the sippy. I didn't put my kids on a big girl or boy cup until around three and even now i give my son a sippy sometimes. I have white carpet!! Drinking through a straw is not a big deal. I have adult friends who only drink through straws. Don't fret about it, it's not going to hurt her at all.

for the longest time i couldn't get my son to use a sippy cup either. what i ended up doing was just buying the "take and toss" brand sippy cups with straws (no spill for the most part). the lids just snap on and poke the sttraw through. they come in packs of 4 and are only about $3. he eventually started using a sippy cup, but i don't think you're have to worry abotu if it's going to be any big detriment to your daughter. it's just a preference. as long as she is getting the right an=mount of fluids it doesn't matter whether it's a regular sippy or one with a straw. good luck

For goodness sake, let her use the straw cup. And I don't know a single one-year-old who can drink from a "big girl" cup. Don't rush it, Mommy. It'll all happens. If you're truly worried about it -- which I personally think you don't need to be -- talk to your pediatrician. My boy who is now 4.5 moved to a "real" cup with no lid sometime around age 3. And you can bet your sippy that he still gets the occasional sippy cup when we want to make sure there are no messes. You're doing fine... you're NOT ruining your child by letting her drink from a straw. Think of it this way if it helps: #1) She'll never remember any of this and #2) she'll still graduate from high school and college and will most assuredly know how to drink from a regular cup by then. :-)
