I tried like 3-4 of them. its like they are to hard to suck. She always wants to take a regular cup and hold it on her own, but she spills it everwhere. please any suggestions will help.

Hello there :) It has been a few years since I have had that problem as my kids are 13,12,and 9, but what I did with all my kids was... Thay got sippy cups for there 1st bday(all wrapped up)when they open them I had them put there bottles in the trash can. That night was rough but if you don't give in to the crying then they learn how to make them work in a day or 2.. Good luck!! :)

Have you tried those cups that have a straw attached, rather than a spout type thing? The ones my son used, the straw is a soft rubbery type thing that is attached to the cup.....

I hear you! I've been trying to get my son on the sippy cup. He dosen't quite understand the concept of sucking on the cup so what I do is I take the little plug out of the lid. It makes it not spill proof anymore but he does actually drink out of it! You could always try that as an option. A little spill is easier to clean up than a big open cup spill. :D

I went through the same thing with my son right before he turned 1. When he was a baby he wouldnt take a pacifier, which was good but when i started to see him with the bottle hanging out of his mouth, I took it away and gave him the sippy cup he hated it and would not use it. If you go to walmart they have a rubber tip sippy cup , worked great . I got him off the bottle that way, but again after awhile he started using it like a pacifier I switched it back and forth with a hard tip sippy cup.Good luck hope it works.

Hi K.,

When my daughter turned 1 it was pretty easy to take the bottle away for me. I did use the sippy cup, but got one that had 2 handles on the side. I believe it was walmart where I was able to get it. It was also a good way for her to use as a regular cup without the lid so she had control. I did the cold turkey take away of the bottle and binkey. She did ask for them and I told her that they were all gone, she bascially said ok.

After going through this with 3 children. I agree with all the other mom's. Nubby is one of the best, its that familar material that helps them to adjust. As far as throwing away the bottles, I honestly wasn't brave enough to do that. What I did do was put soy milk or rice milk "unflavored" into the bottle or just plain water, then put the reg. milk into the cup. I also explained that they were "big" now and only babies need bottles. It may take time but this worked with all three kids. They got to a point that they threw the bottle down and went for the cups. I didn't have to listen to alot of screaming and crying because "they" threw down the bottles.

Good Luck,
You have alot of good advice to work with,

I have tried, literally, every brand of sippy cup. My son is addicted to his second nature transition cup. It goes from bottle to "sippy". It has lots of little holes in the top that only open when baby sucks. It is the ONLY sippy that doesn't drip. The mouthpiece is designed to respond to baby's sucking, therefore, the more or forceful sucking produces more liquid. The "mouthpiece" is also made of silicone I believe, which also helped my son feel more comfortable about leaving behind the bottle. I couldn't even fathom my son letting go of his bottles before buying this particular brand. He now (one month later) refuses the bottle and will choose the sippy cup only. Hope this helps, it might save you a small fortune when buying multiple sippy cups might go to waste. Good Luck!!!!

My daughter is almost 1 and has been off the bottle now for a little over a month. One thing I did was I always had a sippy cup on hand so it was always in sight, when she did have the bottle I would water it down little by little and have the regular fluid (Weather it was formula, Diluted juice or the yogurt smoothies) in the sippy so after a little while she picked up that the good stuff was in the sippy not the bottle. I too also tried every sippy cup I came in contact with when she first started using them, and it seemed that the take & toss cups worked the best for her starting out on them, since it doesnt have that little rubber valve on. I have a book thats says its best to not use the spill proof cups with a rubber valve on it because its almost just like a bottle. I'd keep a water cup out, My daughter loves it when its cold, all day, and keep the juice and milk ones for when shes sitting down so you dont have to worry about spilling it everywhere. With some of the valve ones I sip alittle bit of the drinking part so it isnt so hard to suck but keeps it from spilling everywhere.

my daughter (she was about 10 months when I started)was the same way. It was like she couldn't grasp the idea of sucking on the cup. So, I tried a straw first. And it worked great! After she got the concept, I began giving her the sippy cup. Try NUBY. Its a good brand, and they're fairly easy to suck through. After she gets the idea, you shouldn't have any problems with different types. Good luck

They have stage 4 cups that are similar to the side of a regular cup have you tried those? or straw cups? My ds is almost 2 and is off the cups with traditional spouts. The straw cups that he likes the best are playtex quick straw, and the new gerber cups. We also use the take and toss cups with a straw when we are out and about.

I had my DS off the bottle by his 1st birthday I just gave him all his drinks in sippy cups then if he asked for a bottle I made it a long drawn out process. Eventually he would just take the cup. He only drank milk in a bottle at that time all his juice and water were given in a sippy cup.

Just keep trying hopefully she will take one soon and then its bye bye bottles.

The sippy cups have those plugs in them and that makes it harder to suck. I started by taking the plug out for a week or so, use only water though, until the kids get the hang of it and then you can put the plug back in once the concept is understood.
Best of luck

try putting a sticker on the sippy cup and show her the sticker and tell her its her new cup. it worked for my kids. hide the bottles and do not show her the bottles just the cups. have her learn how to drink out of a regular cup( a kiddie cup-- the kind that u can just reuse over and over and some of them may have sippy lids on them and comes in different colors.) it may seem fusteruating but u and her will get used to it by then she will be sucessful in mastering a new milestone by using a sippy cup. there are sippy cups from playtex and they have handles on the sides of the cups and they are dishwasher safe.

Hi. My daughter liked a cup by the company, "Nuby". I found them only at target. They are easy to clean and the top is very similar to a bottle material, for easy transition. The sippy part has slits rather than holes that can be cut if necessary to make it easier for her to suck on yet keep it from spilling over the sides. Good luck and I hope this helps. Thanks, K.

Hi K., what worked best for me was to put away all the bottle's & store them somewhere it's hard to get to. Or just throw them away if you don't want them. Anyhow, I tried this sipper I ____@____.com's called NUBY. They come with this insert that you can change the flow slow-fast. Like you I went through probably 5 or 6 sippy's until I found one that did not leak & that he would actually suck. I hope this helps you. Sometimes I found them @ walmart but for the most part I went to target.

Hi K.,

Not sure if you have tried the brand Nuby (they carry them at Walmart).

It is great for little hands and the sippy portion is made out of silicone (or something like it) so it is soft just like a nipple but shaped differently. It is also spill proof (until a little portion comes out and then you have to get another.

It was the only sippy cup that I have used since my daughter transitioned herself at 11 months from a bottle to this.

Hope this information helps you!

All children are different K.. In saying that, my one child took to no sippy cups. Wasted lots of money. He reached for my water bottle and started sipping from that and stuck with it for years and years. It's hard to say what your child will go to. Be open to just about anything. He might just want to start drinking from a cup. It's hard being a working mother and doing this. I understand. But give it a try. Give him options as a cup or waterbottle. He might surprise you. My child gave me no choice in the matter.

I see alot of people like th nubby cups. My son didn't like them. Anything soft he just wants to chew on and then gets pissed when his mouth fills with liquid. One day he was playing with my older son's take or toss spill proof cup and so I helped him put it in his mouth and he took to it right away. He now drinks from a cup and he is only 10 months. They are spill proof enough that they are not a huge mess if droped but they drip a little, so it's easy for him to suck. Some of the other ones are very hard to suck. I know I've tried! We have almost every cup made at our house and the only ones he likes are those disposables.

Hi! K.:
My son is 1 and the best sippy cup I found, and the only one he will drink out of, is by Nuby. It has a soft nipple like a bottle but wider like a sippy cup. I have found them at both Wal Mart and Babies R Us for about $1.99. Also does not leak.

Wal-mart has sippy cups that have a spill proof stra instead of a cup type lid. My Daughter LOVED those. They still somewhat have the texture of a bottle, and are spill proof. The only problem is that you have to watch to make sure that she doesn't get too much air. It took a little while to figure it out. They also have the sippy cups, but instead of the hard plastic they are made out of the oft rubber like material. Those work really great as well. Good luck!

Hi K.. I started both of my little boys on a sippy cups when they were around 6 months old. The best that I have found so far are the Playtex ones. They have some with handles for littler ones. They are really good when it comes to being spill proof as well. It just takes time and eventually she will get used to it.

You know, I'm having the same issue. My son nurses, and I want to start regular milk once he's one, and I don't want to have to introduce a bottle. The best I've heard is that if you offer the sippy throughout the day (at meals, during play time, whenever you think of it), they'll get it eventually. I know it doesn't seem like helpful advice, but like everything else, they get it when they're good and ready to get it. Keep it positive, don't get frustrated with her, and make it fun. Maybe when she gets a good mouthful from her sippy, cheer for her. Make a big deal out of her successes. Make sure whoever watches her while you're working is doing the same. It may be that her sitter or daycare is taking the easy way out and not really emphasizing the cup. Hold them accountable to your plan. She will get it!

Hi K.. I tried a lot to and the brand I swear by is not Gerber (and I'm a Gerber freak! lol). Try Parent's Choice. They make some with soft....um nipplie thingys. They feel better on babies' gums. My son wouldn't use anything except their bottle nipples...the one with the bumps on them. So, natuarally I tried the Parent's Choice sippy cups and they worked like a charm. My son is still on bottles, though, and I'm still trying to break him off. He also wants his own real cup and he spills. If she insists on the real thing, pour tiny little amounts in it and try that. Good luck. Best Wishes, T.

Hi K.- I have an 11month as well and my son just stated taking the sippy cup. We would give it to him with his meals at first. he would just play with it and chew on it. Finally he realized there was something to drink in it. He did have to get used to swallowing different. The sippy cup comes out faster than the bottle. But his 2year old cousin has a sippy cup and now he wants it everytime she is over! Just be patient and keep trying, they will take it when they are ready. Some how they learn on their own, part of growing up I guess. Ohhh and at first, we would hold it for him, so he would learn the different positions in his mouth, it feels different and he has to hold it up higher than the bottle.

My son is 20 months and I had the same issue. He will drink out of them now but prefers a regular cup. We allowed him to have regular cups. We would only put water in them so if he did spill it was easy clean up. They can and do learn to hold their cup up. My son is a pro now. When he was so small and I would hand him a cup, people that didn't know me would freak out. When he would take a drink and put it in his cup holder or table people would be amazed. I even had one person tell me I was looking for trouble giving him a cup. Boy did he show her! I always just figured he would let me know what he was ready for. I don't insist that he do what I want. I do however require him to use a sippy or bottled water in the car. Have you tried to get little bottled waters and use that?

On the sippy cups, some of them have a "spill-proof" plug inside. I just take them out. They won't be super spill proof but she can learn to tip and sip with out pouring it all over themselves. I woud chant at my daughter...tip it up, tip it up, tip it up...and show her how to lift it. Once it tips in your daughters mouth and she tastes it, she'll be motivated to try again...even if it catches her off guard and she takes in too much.

Good luck.

Have you tried the NUBY sippy cups yet? The ones with soft straws? I get those at WalMart and my twins really love them.

I tried those hard and small Gerber sippy cups with my girls at 10 months and they would not have any part of them.

So, at 11.5 months, I tried the NUBY soft tip sippy cups. They are a dream.

I give them milk or 1/2 applejuice 1/2 water in them.

(we don't throw them away though) she loves thoe the best! Also for about 48 hours it was hell to get her off the bottle but we never gave in, and now she is off 100% the bottle! Its Great!
