I have been getting a sinus headache since Xmas and taking Mucinex DM daily. Stuff is coming out slowly. My head hurts really bad and some congestion. Lots of acid reflux and heartburn. It's hard for me since water and orange juice make it really bad. I have also done a nasal wash. We don't have insurance at the moment so I am trying to do what I can on my own. How many days usually help with the Mucinex? Should I keep taking it? I am going to call my dr tomorrow and see if he'll prescribe something for my sinus infection without me going in since I get them about 4 times a year. Can I take Tylenol with Mucinex?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Amazingly I woke up feeling much better! I used some nose spray before bed and woke up with a very clear nose and headache finally gone. I can't take Ibuprofen because I have an allergy to it so I take Tylenol. I wonder if the Mucinex was making the heartburn worse because it was constantly there the whole time I was using it.

Mucinex is for chest congestion. Why are you taking it for a sinus infection?

Musinex, Tussin, and Robotussin are ALL the same medication. Read the label. It's ALL Guaifenesin. AND it's ALL the same dose. It's an Expectorant for chest congestion. Also there is NO reason to pay for a name. It's the same medication. Save the money and go with the Walmart brand or store brand, it's all the same med.

You need to take a straight up decongestant. I only use real Sudafed and only take half a dose. It gets the goo moving and out. Then the antibiotic has a much better chance of killing the stuff that is left in the cavities of the sinuses.

Decongestant is to make goo runny and come out. Sudafed is the best. The fake sudafed is in almost everything and it doesn't work for any of us.

Antihistamine, Benadryl, Claritin, etc...DRY IT UP and make it sticky, stay where it is.

If you have a runny nose that is clear and no congestion then it's allergies and okay to take a med that will stop the allergic reaction.

When I think Mucinex or DM I think cough. When you describe your symptoms you are not mentioning a cough.

For sinus congestion, I would think REAL Sudafed would be a better remedy and then an antihistamine such as Claritin or Zyrtec (The generic brands work equally well.)

I also recommend the Neilmed Sinus Rinse bottle and packets. This is a very effective way to flush out some of that congestion much quicker than otherwise.

Also, I highly recommend zinc. I just buy the plain $4 bottle of Zinc 50 mg at Walmart. I take one daily, but when I feel something coming on with my sinuses, I will take 1 every 4 hours. I am astounded how many times it never turned into a sinus infection.

So if your doctor will not prescribe something over the phone, definitely try the zinc, Sudafed (that you have to show your ID for), and the sinus rinse bottle for sure.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Check the active ingredients on the Mucinex. (There are different formulas) If the Mucinex has Acetaminophen in it then you can not take them together since Tylenol's active ingredient is Acetaminophen.

Personally I prefer to take Motrin (or another Ibuprofen) I take 600 mg (3 pills) 2x's per day since this will reduce inflammation in your sinuses.

My doctor will assume it is a cold or viral upper respiratory infection until I have had symptoms for 7+ days. Only after 7 days will they give an antibiotic.

Talk to the nurse. You don't want to go to your doc to have them tell you it is a cold and to come back if your not better in a few days.

Feel better.

Call the doc.

In the mean time.. GARLIC it a natural antibiotic, swelling reducer. It will help releive them. Hot shower/steam should also help.

Sinus infections are nothing to mess around with. They are so close to the brain and can spread. I had a co-worker get one and had it for months. She was on antibiotics for about 6 weeks because it just would not go away.

Good luck

Take this:

Or this:

It is Sudafed w/pseudoephedrine
You need to get it from behind the pharmacy counter, at the drugstore. Just ask them for it.
And it combats bad sinus issues or infections.
This is the only one, that helps my Husband.
The Sudafed with pseudoephiedrine, is the only one that will help.

Mucinex is fine.
If I try to dry up with sudafed the mucus gets thick and I get worse sinus infections.
Stay well hydrated and steam your nose often.
Make up some jello and drink it while it's warm before it sets up.
Chicken soup is wonderful, ginger ale, popsicles, etc are all things that will help.
Hope you feel better soon!

You need antibiotics. Stop trying to do this by yourself and spend the money to go to the doctor. I had to have sinus surgery because of a sinus infection that would not clear. You don't want to go through that, I promise you.

Welcome to the club. I have had a weird sinus infection along with chills, ringing in the ears and muscle aches since Thursday, no fever but feeling truly yukky.
I've been drinking chamomile tea, a potful daily and it is getting better. Chamomile tea helps release toxins from the body. It works by making you sweat and pee a lot. I also made a pot of chicken soup. I had 3 chicken leg quarters in the freezer so I thawed them and cooked them up adding some onion and celery then salt, pepper, garlic powder, and poultry seasoning. I let it cook until the meat was done, removed the meat added a bag of frozen green beans, a bag of peas, some corn and 3 carrots, let that cook. When the meat cooled enough to take it off the bones I boned the meat and cut it up and added it back to the soup. When the veggies were done I added precooked rice. Turned out yummy.
Result:
Today I feel much better. There is less pressure in my sinuses and the ringing in my ears is not as loud or constant. I will be on the tea/chicken soup diet a couple more days. I do this when I get sick and it always works for me.

Many years ago a study was done at Johns Hopkins Medical School on the effects of chicken soup on colds and flu. What they found out was cold and flu viruses cling to chicken fat and are thus taken out of the body speeding recovery. So Great Grandma and Grandma were right all along.

It might help to get a vaporizer going. I tend to keep one going most of the winter since my house gets really dry.

I hope this helps.

I've had sinus issues going on since early December. It sucks! Late last week I finally was able to get a prescription filled for an antibiotic, which my doctor's office was happy to call in for me without me having to schlep all the way out there to hear what I already knew. I had been taking Sudafed Sinus with minimal relief, it didn't dry me up but at least it loosened up what was in there so I could blow it out. I also am a big fan of the nasal rinse. It brings instant relief. Just be careful not to do it if you are totally plugged up because I think you could hurt your ears.

Anyhow, my advice is to continue the Mucinex and the nasal rinse, take Ibuprofen for the headache, drink a ton of water, load up on Vitamin C, and if you aren't feeling better after a week, call the doc for an antibiotic. They should be able to call it in without you having to visit, as long as you don't have anything else going on. Do you have Meijer in your area? If so, they have a few antibiotics that are free at their pharmacy (with a doctor's Rx of course) which is nice when you don't have insurance. If no Meijer, would be worth checking if any area stores do something similar in your neighborhood.

Good luck and feel better soon!

Yes, you can add Tylenol or Advil to the mix. Advil will help with the inflammation. I hate to say it but you may need some antibiotics to cure this once and for all. Feel better!!

And the Mucinex DM is fine. In fact, it will decongest your sinuses and lungs should anything be settling down there!

Personally, I prefer Aleve D Sinus and Cold to relieve my sinus congestion. But I think it's about time you went to the doctor or Care Clinic.

Hope you feel better soon!
