J.R.
I used it when I had postpartum depression and didn't experience any side effects. The very first time I took it I remember getting really sleepy but that's about it.
My Dr. just prescribed me Lexipro for depression, however I have heard that it can cause weight gain. Lord knows I don't need that -- it will just add to my depression! Do any of you take this and what kinds of side effects did you encounter?
Thanks to all of you for your help! I did a lot of reading about Lexapro yesterday...including a really good message board on about.com. I know that everyone's reaction to meds differ, but I was concerned with the numerous claims of weight gain, fatigue and memory loss. Those are definitely 3 things I already struggle with so I didn't need anything to increase those symptoms! I also read up on Wellbutrin and decided that I would rather try it first. I had my Dr. change the prescription. I start taking it tonight and will let you know how it goes.
I did want to mention that I took Prozac for almost 3 years. It had a devastating effect on my mental state and my marriage. The whole time I thought I felt better -- but that was because it caused me to just not give a damn about anything....including my husband. I was tired ALL the time and I had terrible memory loss. It wasn't until now that I have been off of it for almost 6 months that I can see how bad it really was. I am still more depressed and sad than I should be, and stressed out due to marriage issues brought on by all of this. I told my Dr I really needed something that wasn't going to cause me the same effects!
Thanks agian

J.,
I took Lexipro before I got pregnant with my second child and I don't really remember having any side effects. What I do remember is that it did help. I only took it for about 3 months but it got me back where I needed to be mentally.

I used Lexipro for a couple of months and didn't experience weight gain, I did experience Restless Leg Syndrom type symptoms at a very low dose -- I am super sensitive to meds. Switched to Cymbalta for my Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder symptoms - really bad ones - and have had great success.
Tried Zoloft after my last child was born and had a hard time with my concentration. When I would get interrupted, I would totally lose my train of thought - not good when you have 3 little ones interrupting you all day long ;-).
The best you can do is try it and pay attention to how you react, if it isn't for you, there are several other options now available. Don't hesitate to tell your Doctor of symptoms/side-effects even if their not on the prescription insert. As it has been said on the other responses, everyone reacts differently.
Best of Luck,
L.
Hi! I've been on Lexipro- mainly due to anxiety. I have had NO side effects! I haven't gained any weight, gotten acne, felt increase feelings of depression. I like it a lot!
Hope you get to feeling better and lexipro works for you!
Hi J.,
It's funny you put this on here. I just started to take mine yesterday and am trying to lose weight! Let me know how it works for you. I used Zoloft a long time ago and did have some side effects! Good luck and remember to look up when you are upset, it causes you to think with your rational side and not with your feelings.
I used to take this and i didn't notice any weight gain but it did make me feel like a zombi and i just felt more depressed. It has different outcomes for different people though and i have heard that it helped alot in other cases than mine,i know there is a website for it,i would google it and get as many facts as you can about it and then self evaluate,i am not big on doctors so i usually try to find my sources on medical questions via internet. Its worth a shot,Best of luck-B.
i was on lexipro after i had my son and i didn't gain any weight while i was on it. i think it helped me immensely. for me it helped me get through the day without just dragging around. also, it was really easy to stop taking. some drugs like that have bad side effects when you are trying to get off of them but lexipro didn't for me.
Everyone reacts differently to different meds. I've been on Celexa for 5 years w/ no side effects I can note, but I know people, too, who haven't been able to tolerate it. You just need to be aware of your self & keep your dr. up to date on any changes you're noticing. A different drug in the same class may not cause the same problems. Unfortunately, it can be a lot of trial & error.
Good Luck!

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

J., you may want to consider checking out some of the local alternative health places if you are concerned about the depression medications.
I had to take Cybalta which is an anti depression medication which works to stop pain in diabetics .. (my neck pain and I am not a diabetic) but I got off of it cause I would go for about 48 to 72 hours with no sleep.. it was horrible. Then I would crash big time. Went to someone in Irving and he really helped stop the pain in my neck and back.
If you are working from home, I am wanting to start a networking group of home based businesses so we can support or buy from each other without any pressure to buy or we can just practice with each other for feedback etc..
By the way, our company has outsourced their coaching to an awesome woman who will teach you how to market anything and the best part is it also helps your personal life and you get the training for free at her website and the training calls are free also on Monday nights at 9:00 P.M. She gives you the scripts ...it is so very easy and for the 1st time I know that my investment in this home based business will not be another package of stuff on a shelf. I finally understand why some people love sales careers and are successful at it.
Take care,
E.
